If you have been searching for an awesome 1978 Pontiac Trans Am that is not only great to look at but is equally as fun to drive and will stand out in a group of Trans Ams then this may be the one for you!  This is actually the 3rd time I have owned this beauty. I originally bought it about 5 1/2 years ago from a gentleman in California. This Trans Am spent its entire life in California to that point and was originally sold in Bakersfield, CA and still retains all the original CA smog equipment.  I sold the car to a gentleman in Kentucky who loved it but after owning it for close to 4 years and driving it less then 3000 miles he decided it was time to let it go to the next owner.  I was thrilled to have the chance to buy this beauty back from him and when it arrived it looked as good as the day I sold it to him. In fact I believe it was even a notch above where it was as the previous owner had the air conditioning gone through and charged up so it blows nice and cold. I also added some of the Special Edition Y88 style pin striping to the car that accents the Solar gold paint very nicely.  This is not a true Y88 gold edition Trans Am but I think after you review the pics and watch the videos you will agree that it is a special edition in its own right given how unique it looks. Then I sold it again to a true car guy in NC almost 2 years ago. He bought it for his wife so she could attend the car shows with him and his '69 Camaro. Shortly after he bought it he emailed me a pic of both cars together at a show and the Trans Am had won a peoples choice award. He told me it did very well at all of the shows they took it to and accumulated a nice group of trophies.  Then just recently I found out he moved to Arizona and had less garage space and decided the Trans Am would have to go. So, once again this Trans Am made its journey in an enclosed trailer back to us. Again, this Trans Am looked as good as when we sold it and he only put about 1500 miles on it in the 2 years they owned it. Since the car looks pretty much exactly the same, most of the pics and videos are from 2012 when we sold it last. I can tell you it looks exactly the same today!  I am providing quite a few large format pictures and a couple of videos so you can see and hear how great this Trans Am sounds. These may take a little while to download so please give the listing a few minutes as I think it will be worth your wait. Sit back and enjoy!!

This '78 TA was painted approximately 8 years ago in the cars original color of Solar Gold which is paint code 50 on the trim tag in the engine bay. As you can see in the pictures the paint looks excellent and body panel gaps are very close to factory original. I believe the car still has its original body panels. At the time the paint was done new decals were applied including new Hood Bird and sail panel birds.  I love the Y88 Gold Special Edition cars so I decided to add some of the pin striping accents that those cars have. I realize it does not have all of the correct pinstriping that the Y88 cars have so please do not email me to point this out. I was not trying to clone this car. This Trans Am has a unique look of its own thanks in part to the awesome 18" Snowflake wheels. While the car is absolutely beautiful, it is not perfect. There are some minor flaws in the paint in several spots that I do not think will show in the pics and most people probably would not notice.  The passengers side door looks like it had some bodywork many years ago probably from a dent that was pulled out. There is some pitting in the chrome trim around the front grilles as they are most likely original. There is a minor flaw in the hood bird decal.  While it is not a concours restoration, overall this Trans Am looks fantastic and thanks to it being a California car it is rock solid and was not subjected to harsh winters or salt on the roads. You will be proud to take this TA to the local shows and cruise ins. The last owner and his wife drove this Trans Am to many shows and cruise ins and it won its share of trophies and drew all the attention they expected..  Here is a walk around tour of the body of this gold beauty:

My personal preference is to pull the T-Tops off every chance I get and drive and enjoy this Trans Am with an open air experience but I want to let you know that the T-tops are in great condition and seal up very well with no leaks noticed.  I also have the original GM Fischer T-Top cases that will come with the car as well. Take a look:

The camel and tan interior is also in beautiful condition. Before I purchased the car the first time about 6 years ago the carpet, headliner and door panels were replaced. The seats themselves are cloth and are in great condition with minimal wear. It is a pleasure having the cloth seats on those sunny days as opposed to the vinyl seats. Since these pictures were taken the seatbelt holder for the drivers side seat has been added. The dash looks great and many years ago a dash pad cover was installed and fits great and looks original. An after market AM/FM/CD player was installed neatly in the dash and sounds great out the 4" front speakers in the front console and 6x9 speakers in the rear deck that were all professionally installed.  This Trans Am has a tilt steering wheel and the steering wheel itself looks great. The glitter dash also is in very nice condition and all the gauges and lights appear to be working correctly other then the clock.  Power windows operate quickly and smoothly thanks to newer  motors that were installed recently. There are a few small spots in the plastic interior panels where the paint has started to chip but these could easily be touched up.  Center console is in very nice condition as well. The last owner changed out the shifter bezel to a silver one to match the dash. You will see some pics with the old one and then I added a pic with the new one.  A nice set of matching Trans Am floor Mats finishes off the look. As you will see in the pics below the interior looks great!

Under the shaker hood of this Solar Gold is the original 403 6.6 L V8 that runs fantastic. Since this was a CA car it got the 403 motor and this car runs out extremely strong.  The only alteration under the hood is a set of ceramic coated long tube Hooker headers that breathe out the great sounding Flow Master dual exhaust. Otherwise the engine bay is relatively untouched and is very clean although it has not been detailed but could easily be detailed for show purposes if desired. The mileage on this car is right under 128,290 miles and the motor has always been very well maintained and was recently tuned up. The Turbo 350 automatic transmission shifts crisp and strong and was rebuilt a little over 4 years ago. Other items that were replaced recently included KYB shocks, radiator, optima red top battery and water pump. Power steering makes handling a breeze and this car tracks straight and true. Front power disc brakes making stopping effortless. This Trans Am handles amazingly thanks in part to the awesome 18" Billet Snowflake Wheels that are wrapped in close to new Eagle F1 rubber. The rears are 18x10 and fronts are 18x9 giving this ride quite a foot print on the road. In addition the front and rear were lowered about 1 1/2 inches. The last owner added a helper spring to the rear leaf springs because he thought it needed them to handle the added wight of rear passengers. This gold bandit is an absolute joy to drive!!! Take a look and then take a minute to watch the video below to hear this sweet TA running.

The undercarriage and inside of the trunk of this Trans Am are rock solid. This has always been a California or Southern car so rust was never an issue. The trunk has the original mat and also an additional grey carpet on top of that. There is a jack and as mentioned previously the original GM Fisher T-top bags will be included.  I have also taken a picture of the original trim tag showing the original codes.

Pontiac Firebird in latest Generation Gap scrap

Tue, 30 Sep 2014

Generation Gap is mining the Lingenfelter collection again this week to compare two very different interpretations of the Pontiac Firebird. An original 1968 example goes toe-to-toe with a 2010 Lingenfelter Trans Am to see whether the old man or the modern re-imagining takes the crown.
Being from the Lingenfelter collection, both cars are absolutely immaculate. The '68 packs a Pontiac 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) V8 with a claimed 320 horsepower and some classic, muscular style with a hood-mounted tach. Plus, it's painted in an understated shade of green that you don't usually see.
In the other corner is Lingenfelter's pumped-up take on the classic shape based on the modern Camaro, and this is just one of six concept versions ever made. It wears an eye-catching, vintage-inspired livery of blue with a white stripe package. Under its shaker hood is a 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8 with a reported 655 hp and 610 pound-feet of torque.

Looking back at Oprah's free-car giveaway 10 years later

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Oprah kicked off her 19th season in dramatic fashion by giving all 276 members of the studio audience a free car.
Molly Vielweber's Pontiac G6 appears unremarkable at first glance. It wears forest green paint, rolls on five-spoke aluminum wheels, and it has a sizeable scrape in the driver's side door, the scar of a decade's worth of hard use. You wouldn't notice it parked at a big box store or cruising on the highway. Pontiac made hundreds of thousands of G6s in the 2000s, and a lot are still on the road. It's unremarkable in every way except for the front license plate, which reads, "Oprah 6."

Airbag recall adds 85k Pontiac Vibes to tally

Fri, 13 Jun 2014

The repairs needed for the faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata continue to expand. Toyota initially announced a recall of 766,300 vehicles equipped with the bad part on June 11 as a followup to a campaign from 2013. Soon after, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation into five automakers who also used the component in their models. Now, NHTSA has released the official announcement of the latest Toyota recall listing 844,277 affected cars, including the newly added 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe.
While NHTSA's document didn't include a model-by-model breakdown, General Motors spokesperson Alan Adler estimated to Autoblog that roughly 85,000 Vibes in the US would be covered under the latest recall. Like the rest of the affected models, the airbag inflator could rupture in a crash causing the bag not to work correctly, possibly spraying metal fragments at the occupant.
Toyota spokesperson Cindy Knight told Autoblog that the reason for the disparity between the earlier press release and NHTSA document was that Toyota was continuing to comb through VINs to create a list of affected vehicles. The original number was an estimate of that process at the time. Scroll down to the recall report from NHTSA.
