1992 Pontiac Trans-Am Convertible

  • Car has 98,514 miles, current engine has only 1,500
  • I've owned this car since 1997. It was my daily driver until it got wrecked a few years ago.
  • Engine was originally a 305, tuned-port 5-speed. Original motor had a connecting rod failure and was scrapped.
  • Current engine is an aluminum head, tuned-port 350, which was pulled out of a wrecked 1991 Corvette with only 30,000 miles
  • We pulled the 350 apart, mic'd everything and reassembled with new rings, bearings, gaskets and seals. Completely overhauled the cylinder heads with new valves and guides
  • New engine had only 1,500 miles when Trans-am was wrecked.
  • Car was rear-ended by full-size Ford van.
  • Bumper, tail lights and other parts shown in pictures were removed to assess and found to have no damage. As far as I can tell, the only things affected by the wreck were the quarter panel being kinked and the metal rear bumper.
  • Car still runs and drives normally. Wreck had no effect on mechanical or suspension, except tires rubbing quarter panel when suspension is compressed
  • Convertible top, trunk lid and convertible top lid still function and close normally.
  • The wreck bent the back of the car down, creasing it in the middle of the wheel well.
  • Car has been stored indoors since I purchased in 1997. There is no rust on the car anywhere.
  • Car has been sitting several years.
  • Ran and drove perfectly, with cold AC, when it was parked.
  • Recently put battery in and started it. The fuel pump has failed due to sitting. When you pour fuel into the intake, car starts right up and idles. Should only need fuel pump replaced to drive again.
  • Car is 100% complete.
  • Would be a very easy fix or excellent parts car.
  • Car has rebuilt Florida title due to previous incident before I purchased it in 1997.

Lutz says Washington killed Pontiac, next G6 was to be ATS derivative

Tue, 29 Oct 2013

How many people think Buick or GMC should have gotten the axe instead of Pontiac? You can't see it, but I'm raising my hand. Autoweek reports that former Vice Chairman of GM, Bob Lutz, has indicated that things didn't have to end up the way they did.
"The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.'"
In a talk given at the Petersen Automotive Museum for the Inside the MotoMan Studio series, Lutz says "The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.' So, it goes. And when the guy who is handing you the check for $53 billion says, 'I don't want Pontiac, drop Pontiac or you don't get the money,' it doesn't take you very long to make up your mind." Lutz even added that the next-generation Pontiac G6 would have benefitted from the rear-wheel-drive platform of the Cadillac ATS. How awesome would that have been?

Saturn Vue ignition switch leads to new group of GM recalls totaling 312k

Fri, 08 Aug 2014

General Motors has another spate of recalls to announce. This time they cover 312,280 vehicles worldwide, including 269,041 of in the US, in a total of six campaigns. In 2014, the automaker has recalled 29,079,765 vehicles worldwide, with 25,754,356 of those in the US.
The largest among them covers 215,243 units of the Saturn Vue from 2002-2004 model years worldwide, 202,115 in the US. It's possible for the for the key to be removed even when the ignition isn't in the OFF position. The company knows of two crashes and one injury caused by this problem. Dealers are checking the parts and replacing the ignition cylinder and key set, if necessary.
Next is 72,826 models worldwide (48,059 vehicles in the US) of the 2013 Cadillac ATS four-door sedan, 2013 Buick Encore and 2013 Chevy Trax in Canada. It's possible that the for lap belt pretensioner to retract but not to lock, which could increase occupant movement during a crash. Both front, outboard lap belt pretensioners are being replaced, and a stop-sale is in effect on unsold models until the problem is repaired. There are no known crashes or injuries, though.

Lutz dishes dirt on GM in latest Autoline Detroit

Bob Lutz sits down for Autoline Detroit - Click above to watch video after the jump
Autoline Detroit recently played host to Bob Lutz, and, as is always the case, the former General Motors vice chairman dished out some great commentary. Lutz was promoting his new book Car Guys vs. Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business, and talk quickly turned to his role as it related to product development and high-level decision making at GM. While on the topic of brand management, Lutz revealed a few rather interesting tidbits about his former employer:
All Chevrolet vehicles were required to have five-spoke aluminum wheels and a chrome band up front, as part of the Bowtie brand's overall image.
