1988 BMW M3 - Recent Restoration - Outstanding Example.

Mechanicals:
The car starts, stops and drives exactly as you would expect. It pulls hard, revs smoothly, shifts precisely and brakes easily and in a straight line. There are no leaks of any kind or smoking from the engine. The car shows no evidence of ever having been involved in an accident or collision and is 100% rust free and as clean and solid as its low mileage suggests. Everything in the car works as it should - lights, switches, wipers, gauges, everything. The car is, of course, numbers-matching.

Under the care of the previous owner, the car was well-maintained and there are nearly two dozen receipts attesting to the care it received. Of particular note are receipts showing the car received a new clutch (including slave cylinder and upgraded EVO lightweight flywheel) only 3,500 miles ago.

The car rides on brand new, 205/55/R15 Yokohama S-Drive performance tires. It has been recently serviced. Other than new tires and standard servicing, the only mechanical work performed on the car under my ownership was the addition of a remote door lock system allowing you to lock and unlock the doors with a keychain remote.

The original air conditioning system system is intact and has been converted to R134. As the car has rarely been driven under my ownership, I did not store the car with the system charged. While preparing the car for sale, we did charge the AC and it's now blowing cold but it would not surprise me if the AC system required professional service prior to everyday use.

Exterior:
From every angle, the car presents beautifully.

In 2012, as part of my restoration of the car, it received a professional, glass-out respray in its original color of Zinnoberrot Red. Upon reassembly the car received all new rubber seals, new lenses (including new OEM tail light lenses), new badges and every price of trim on the car was either replaced or professionally refinished.

The car maintains its original glass with the exception of the windshield which was replaced when the car was painted. The replacement windshield was purchased from a BMW dealer and shows the correct BMW and Sekurit markings.

The wheels were sent away for professional refinishing and appear as new. They're complimented by four brand new center caps.

The only flaw worth mentioning is a tiny flaw on the rear spoiler consisting of an almost unnoticeable, approximate 1/2-inch paint crack that you might not notice if I didn't point it out and which could be easily touched up. I have included a close-up photo of this flaw in my online photo album and the very fact that I'm calling your attention to it as the most significant cosmetic issue on the car should give you extreme confidence regarding the condition of this M3.

Interior:
While no used car can ever be described as perfect, the interior of this M3 might be the exception to that rule. We were fortunate that we were starting with an excellent car and many of the interior parts, including the original dash and door panels, looked virtually as good as the day they left the factory. As for everything else...

During our restoration of the car, the interior was completely gutted top to bottom leaving only the original carpet in the car. As oem replacement carpet is unavailable for these cars, we chose to have our original carpet extracted and steam-cleaned with outstanding results.

The leather seats, front and rear, were professionally reupholstered using top-grade, correct materials from GAHH Automotive. The complicated front seat mechanisms were completely disassembled and multiple parts (including several of the mini seat shock absorbers) were replaced which returned full functionality to our seats.

2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive does diesel in a big way

Thu, 06 Feb 2014

Slowly but surely, BMW is expanding its lineup of diesel-powered models here in the United States. In addition to the 328d sedan and wagon, 535d sedan and X5 xDrive35d crossover, we now have this, the BMW 740Ld xDrive (not to mention the refreshed 2015 X3 xDrive28d that also makes its debut here in Chicago). As its name - and the photos above - suggest, this means BMW is offering diesel power in its flagship, long-wheelbase 7 Series sedan, set to directly compete with the likes of the excellent Audi A8 TDI.
Under the hood is BMW's familiar 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-six, delivering 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, all of which is sent to the road via the company's xDrive all-wheel-drive system and ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. That torque thrust is available straight away from 1,500 rpm, and BMW says the 740Ld xDrive will sprint to 60 miles per hour in a very respectable 6.1 seconds. Official fuel economy estimates haven't been released yet, but we expect the car to net highway fuel economy ratings in the mid-30 range.
The 740Ld xDrive arrives in BMW showrooms this spring, priced from $82,500, not including $925 for destination. We're pretty stoked to drive it. But in the meantime, have a look at fresh images of the big sedan live from the Chicago Auto Show, above.

BMW M4 Concept bows, takes handoff from M3 Coupe

Thu, 15 Aug 2013

Remember how, when the first BMW M4 Concept images leaked earlier today, we told you the official information would be coming later this evening? Well, scratch that. The whole kit and caboodle is now online, meaning all the official details are below, as well as a full gallery of high-res images above.
The replacement for the M3 Coupe, the Concept M4 Coupe shares a number of styling similarities with its dearly departed forbearer. To us, it's kind of like a mishmash of greatest hits from the new 4 Series and the old M3. The 4 Series headlights have grown on us, and the side grilles, which are part of BMW's Air Curtain and Air Breather system, are functional.
The power dome in the hood is smaller than on the M3, but is of a similar shape, while the rear diffuser and exhaust treatment look like they're lifted straight from the old car, aside from being finished in carbon fiber. Speaking of which, the carbon fiber roof sports a new touch, a cool BMW M tri-color that runs the length of the roof on the driver's side. The 20-inch M alloy wheels come in a twin five-spoke design, which has sort of become a calling card of BMW's M cars in recent years. Hiding behind those meaty wheels are M's carbon-ceramic brakes.

Bangle urges auto design shakeup, says industry not innovating

Fri, 30 Aug 2013

Controversial designer Chris Bangle, the man behind the notorious E65 BMW 7-Series "Bangle Butt," has some rather sharp criticism for the current crop of automotive designers in an upcoming full-length interview with Automotive News Europe. The preview, posted on Automotive News, details parts of the interview, with the always vocal Bangle lamenting the state of modern automotive design.
"Even concept cars today simply anticipate the next production model coming down the line. Is this innovation? No. And at the end of the day this is what's preventing car design from moving into a new era." Controversial as Bangle's design philosophy may be, we can't help but think he has a point. His so-called "flame surfacing" at BMW and other stylistic elements had a huge influence on modern automotive design, although as the years have passed, there hasn't been much innovation on the same scale.
Interestingly, Bangle also mentions that he's been courted by a few manufacturers that wanted to install the American as the head of their design teams. He's flatly rejected them, telling ANE, "It's not something you can do part time, you have to do it with all your heart and soul or you're going to get it wrong."
