Here is your next project car, and it's one you can actually drive! 1986 VW Cabriolet; it's the official 80's flashback mobile! Be the envy of all your friends and relive the glory days of the 80's in this timeless car. This car is an easy project, it won't take much to have it in tip-top shape by spring. I've owned 3 of these cars, and this is by far the most solid I've had. I purchased this car to be my totally awesome winter project, but the wife put the brakes on my dream. Oh well, maybe next year. But, that's great news for you, because now you can own it! The car has the rabbit 4-cylinder motor, and a 5-speed stick shift transmission. The top is newer, and the car is super solid, even around the windshield, which is rare for these cars! I drove this car 120 miles to get it home, and I would have no problem driving it on a 300 mile trip. The only real rust on the car is on the driver door. The underneath is perfectly solid. It leaks a little power steering fluid, and it pops out of reverse pretty much every time, and it has an exhaust leak. The top is newer, but the rear windshield was never cut in (weird, right?) but the rear windshield and frame are there. Oh, and the driver seat is busted, so it will probably need to be replaced. In fact, all the seats should be recovered. There are several other small issues. But, that's what a project is all about! No reserve auction, feel free to contact me with any questions. Andretti Autosport partners with Volkswagen for Global Rallycross season
Tue, 14 Jan 2014Michael Andretti and Volkswagen have both been involved in Global Rallycross for a couple of years, but not together. Andretti Motorsports Marketing organized the final round of the 2012 GRC series in Las Vegas, and there were rumors then that Andretti was going to get in. Around the same time there were news reports that Volkswagen was preparing a 600-hp Polo Mk5 to race in the SuperCar class; the photo above is racer Anton Marklund in his privateer Marklund Motorsports Polo at the 2013 X-Games round in Los Angeles.
Now it's official: Andretti Autosport will campaign the 2014 GRC season with VWs. That's all that's been said for now, Andretti being busy at the moment launching four entries for IndyCar, two for Indy Lights and two for Pro Mazda. We have a feeling we'll be seeing the MkVII Golf involved, but the cars and the driver lineup will be presented at the Chicago Auto Show on February 6.

Let's have some fun, and do some math. We're talking pretty rudimentary stuff, multiplication and division, to figure out if the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid can make a baseline case for itself against two very strong competitors in this segment. The competitors in question, at least for now, are two more Jettas: the diesel-drinking TDI and the fit-for-the-masses SE with VW's long-serving 2.5-liter engine.
To keep the equations clean and simple (hey, we're writers), we'll calculate based on the most flattering EPA miles per gallon stat from highway driving for all cars, assume a healthy 20,000 miles driven per year, and factor in today's average cost for the respective fuels these three require: diesel (TDI), regular (SE) and premium (Hybrid). We'll also start with the base prices for all models.
