1970 Volkswagen Vw Karmann Ghia Convertible *unique* on 2040-cars
Tampa, Florida, United States
This is a unique, modified, one of a kind Karmann Ghia car that gets lots of attention and compliments everywhere we go. It was chopped and modified to a convertible with a roll bar and is now a two-seater. The outer door handles, bumpers, locks, and side windows were removed to drop weight and the doors were replaced with light, empty fiberglass doors. It has custom vinyl and plastic windows and a convertible top that are snapped into place with a buttom snap system. The top does have a tear in it, but is otherwise useable, although we hardly ever drive it with the top on. The engine was rebuilt about a year ago and converted from a 1776 cc to an 1835 cc, with a single barrel Weber 40 carburetor, and has only been driven about 2,000 miles or less since. It has a manual transmission and when the engine was rebuilt, we also put on a new exhaust, performance clutch, and brakes. We do not know how many miles are actually on the car. The speedometer says 44,772 miles, but that is incorrect. The car runs and drives good and is quick and lots of fun to drive!! We used it as a fun weekend cruising car, and took it to a few car shows, where it got a lot of looks and compliments. There is rust below the doors, which you can see in the photos, and some of it goes all the way through. Also, the gas gauge currently does not work due to an electrical issue. This is a great car, a great project, and very rare!! If you have any questions about the car, please ask before bidding, as there are NO REFUNDS and the car is being sold AS IS. You will also be responsible for picking up the car or arranging to have it shipped if you do not live local (Tampa, FL) within 7 days from date of purchase. Thanks for looking! |

Volkswagen Golf voted 2013 European Car of the Year
Tue, 05 Mar 2013The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf just went on sale in Europe, but it is already off to a promising start. Announced as the Geneva Motor Show kicked off, the newest Golf was named European Car of the Year for 2013 in dominating style over cars like the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 twins, Volvo V40, Ford B-Max and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
According to Automotive News Europe, the MkVII Golf won handily over its rivals with a total of 414 votes. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 received 202 votes finishing in a distant second, while the Volvo V40 (189 votes), Ford B-Max (148 votes) and Mercedes-Benz A-Class (138 votes) round out the top five. The new Golf marks the third Volkswagen product to receive the prestigious award with previous cars including the MkIII Golf and the most recent iteration of the Polo.
VW Up Buggy may be headed to showrooms
Tue, 02 Jul 2013Volkswagen showed six conceptual takes on its Up at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, one of those being the Up Buggy. Although few will probably remember it, VW has not forgotten it, applying for a patent for the Meyers Manx revival roadster way back in March 2012 and being approved in June of this year, according to a report in Autocar. That will give the automaker a 14-year lock on the design while it decides whether to move forward with a reboot of its past.
A patent doesn't mean the Up Buggy will ever move beyond the sheet-of-paper stage, but Autocar says VW is studying the market to see if a production version is feasible. We can't see North America ever getting it, but even so, we wouldn't complain if they made it - especially if they put an exposed engine in back that was set off by 18-inch-long twin tailpipes jutting straight up into the air. However, for a company that aims to be the world's number-one automaker by 2018, a niche vehicle for its mass-market brand would be a surprising use of resources.
VW readying new VR6 with forced induction
Fri, 27 Sep 2013Volkswagen built a stonking, narrow-angle V6 in the 1980s and 1990s that was found in three different generations of the Golf (their performance iterations, obviously), three generations of the Passat, the New Beetle, the Corrado and the Touareg, among other VWs, a spate of Audis, Seats, a Skoda, and even the Porsche Cayenne. It was a sad day when it was announced that it'd be put out to pasture.
Rejoice, though, fans of the venerable VR6, because Volkswagen has a new, modern variant in the works that, according to AutoWeek, features direct injection and can easily be fitted with forced induction. In fact, AW mentions Volkswagen insiders that claim this unit will spawn a production version of the twin-turbo V6 shown on the Design Vision GTI from this year's Wörthersee festival. That unit produced an epic 503 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque.
Don't expect a production unit with that level of power (although it would make a hardy RS4 powerplant), though. In reality, AutoWeek is suspecting anywhere from 340 to 450 horsepower from the new mill. When it arrives at an undisclosed date in the future, it'll likely be found in the Passat and Passat CC as well as the production version of the CrossBlue.
