We bought this car as a project for my son. He took it out without permission and rolled it into the ditch next to the house. Because he did so he ripped off the exhaust and tore up the brake lines (which needed to be replaced) and now has an empty reservoir, and the e-brake cable is broken. I will tell you what the previous owner has told me about the car when we purchase it a couple of weeks ago. It needs a clutch, brake lines, has a bad coolant hose, and needs body and floorboard work. The tires had been recently replaced (one is bad now- so 3 good tires), front brake work was done, bumper and one fender were recently replaced, and a roof rack added. I thought, "Ok, aside from the clutch all are easy fixes we can do in our spare time." Well, my son added to the list of repairs and expenses and now I would like to recoup some of the money we spent and minimize the loss.

Now, I'll sum up all the other nasties the previous owner didn't mention. The alarm system has been disconnected for some reason, but the electrical seems fine. The floorboards were worse then we previously thought... rolling it into a ditch revealed this. Aside from the floorpans, underneath the car doesn't look bad for any other rust. Biggest RUST issues are the floorpans, driver's door and rocker, and the gas tank door surround. The passenger side rocker could use a patch, but not in terrible condition. The rest of the body appears solid. Clear coat is peeling. Engine starts right up and runs great. The coolant leak I did not really investigate. Doesn't appear to be heavy, no white smoke, and no coolant in the oil, and compression is good. The interior needs a little work, but overall is very clean (previous owners took nice care of the interior). The ignition switch has a little bit of over-travel... once you start it you need to turn it back about 1/8".

This will be a great car for someone who has the time and energy. Buy to fix or use as a good parts car. Would like to see someone get some use out of it, but the scrap yard will give me close to what I paid for it.

I will give you a quick list of what I know this car needs: 1 new tire, brake lines, floor board repairs, clutch, e-brake cable, exhaust, coolant hose, and body work. If you can do this yourself, you have a car that needs about $1,200 in repairs for a nice running car. So, come on up to beautiful Kittery, Maine and get this out of here! I'll be happy to answer any questions. If pertinent, I'll revise ad to reflect your inquiries.

Witness this insane 736-hp VW Golf immolate its front tires

Mon, 11 Mar 2013

There's torque steer and then there's what we'll from now on dub "The Boba," as in Boba Kettler. The German tuner has a way with the Volkswagen Golf, and the MkI example you see above has been touched with 736 horsepower - that's right, 96 more ponies than a new SRT Viper, all trying to get to ground through those two front wheels.
The 2.0-liter, 16-valve engine has an 8,800 rpm redline and is aided by a Garrett GTX3582R turbocharger shoving 50 psi through the internals. Other upgrades include a new ECU (natch) and a six-speed 'box among other treats. The rubber is Toyo R888s - street-legal competition tires. The result is enough smoke for three Chinese New Years when the lights go green. Indeed, the standing start isn't its forte, but it can apparently get from 62 miles per hour to 124 mph in five seconds.
Watch it go in the video below. And know that this isn't even Boba's best work; he's got a 900-hp MkII Golf that'll do 0-62 mph in 2.3 seconds.

Volkswagen Golf Wagon caught completely uncovered

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

Without a lot of information to go with them, our camera-toting spies have captured some new images of a Volkswagen Golf wagon variant that is almost completely undisguised. In fact, the one piece of camouflage on the tidy wagon would probably have gone unnoticed to most casual viewers. Look closely at the rear three-quarter view of the car and you'll notice that the apparent taillight clusters are actually fakes - the outline of the real units is faintly visible behind the blue bodywork and the sticker-like fake taillights.
It's a good guess then, that this Golf wagon (called a Golf Kombi by our spy photographer) is a prototype that's pretty far along in the development cycle for Volkswagen. We can't be sure what impact this will have on the company's small wagon offering here in the US, but we'd be pretty surprised if something very like this didn't end up as the next Jetta SportWagen. We might well have more information on that front, after we visit Geneva next week.

Bentley considering diesel engine for new SUV

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

Turns out, in case you didn't know, the rich are just like regular people. They too are concerned about the environment, even when tooling around town in their super-luxurious Bentleys. So the automaker is weighing the idea of offering a diesel engine in its SUV offering, which could help satisfy customers' demands for more fuel-efficient engines.
Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Schreiber told Autoblog in a roundtable interview at the Geneva Auto Show that the automaker is researching whether or not a diesel engine makes sense for the brand. Bentley, owned by the Volkswagen Group, could in theory use a diesel engine from anywhere in the Volkswagen Group family. We at Autoblog have hopes they'll revive the V10 TDI used in the VW Touareg until 2010, but ever-stricter emissions laws would likely make that problematic.
But rich people aren't so much like us that they'll be worried about petty things like pricing. Schreiber admitted the diesel engine could be a $15,000 option, which he said customers would probably find "acceptable." Given that the cheapest Bentley today starts at $177,000, typical customers probably won't be diddling around worrying about an extra 15 grand.
