Please read the full description before making your bid.
You are about to bid on a nice daily driver Vanagon that has been taken care of very well. I bought this van with the diesel engine conversion and improved it to include the air conditioning, power steering, and much, much more. The vehicle has 205,000 miles but the engine only has 75,000 miles. The engine is a 1.6 liter naturally aspirated diesel with a manual glow. I have changed the oil in this engine every 3-5000 miles and replaced fuel and air filters every 10,000 miles. The engine does not leak and starts EVERY TIME. This is probably the best engine VW every put in its cars. If you keep the oil fresh it will run foreverrrrr! It has a NEW injection pump installed 10/2012 (the injection pump is the heart of the diesel engine). This van runs at 25-30 MPG with the AC running! The other day I got 26.8 MPG running around town with the AC running all the time. On the highway in the winter you'll get 30 MPG no problem. On the highway you can cruise at 60-65 MPH all day long. Actually, the wife and I took it to Maine and back last year!
Mechanically, it has had just about everything replaced in the last 18 months except the front end and suspension. I had Tucson's best Vanagon mechanic at Stuttgart Autohaus do almost all the work on this van with reciepts to prove it. Gary at Stuttgart has replaced the camshaft, accelerator cable, transmission, timing belt, valve cover, fuel tank w/ fuel lines, alternator, AC compressor, AC lines, AC dryer, and power steering pump. The braking system has had a make over too. I took out the front dash to have a professional replace the power brake booster, master cylinder, and slave cylinder. Meanwhile, I replaced the heater fan, heater valve, all the dash lights, radio antenna, and put in a modern CD player w/ USB port. This van has had ALL tires replaced with Yokohama Y356 load rated for Vanagons (very important) on 5/31/2012.
The exterior was repainted some years ago by a professional. I also had a heavy duty custom hitch made by Vanagon hitch maker Dennis Haynes. There are only two fabricators of heavy duty Vanagon hitches in the USA and Dennis is on of them. This hitch is rated to take the full load capacity of the Vanagon.
The interior has had an extensive make over. The previous owner sold it to me without any seats or heater in the rear of the van. I sourced the original middle seat and folding back sofabed but did not replace the rear heater since it was never needed. The curtains are custom made and I sourced the curtain rods from Europe specifically for the hard top Vanagons. All of the interior panels are re-fabricated with custom upholstery except the back 3 panels around the engine compartment. Underneath all the panels are noise and vibration reducers to keep the interior quieter on the highway. Gary and I also took down the overhead AC unit, resealed it and repainted it black for aesthetics. Air condition blows COLD and will cool down the van even in Tucson's 106 degree heat. However, do your research for old Vanagon AC systems. They are factory installed and notorious as not the best nor the hardest blowing units every designed. This is the original AC system that has been resealed and repainted. The old carpeting of the Vanagon is under Lloyd's custom floor mats throughout the driver and passenger areas of the Vanagon floor. I also bought a custom cut dash cover to go over the heat cracked dash board.
This is an ARIZONA car with absolutely NO RUST. However, as with most Vanagons, there are some imperfections. The paint on the roof is fading and the gloss is peeling. The front passenger seat has a rubber cement stain. Some of the rear passenger seat belts are missing. The front washer tank is missing. The coolant light is blinking without any apparent mechanical reason (probably an electrical issue). Sometimes the AC fan needs a tap to get started. The rear fold down seat is not original and was sourced from another van with grey interior, however it functions perfectly. Also, as seen in the photos, there is a small dent in the rear drivers side corner that can be easily fixed at a good body shop. The RPMs do not read as it requires a special connector on the alternator that I never needed. Finally, the spare tire is not a Yokohama.

VW readying new VR6 with forced induction
Fri, 27 Sep 2013Volkswagen built a stonking, narrow-angle V6 in the 1980s and 1990s that was found in three different generations of the Golf (their performance iterations, obviously), three generations of the Passat, the New Beetle, the Corrado and the Touareg, among other VWs, a spate of Audis, Seats, a Skoda, and even the Porsche Cayenne. It was a sad day when it was announced that it'd be put out to pasture.
Rejoice, though, fans of the venerable VR6, because Volkswagen has a new, modern variant in the works that, according to AutoWeek, features direct injection and can easily be fitted with forced induction. In fact, AW mentions Volkswagen insiders that claim this unit will spawn a production version of the twin-turbo V6 shown on the Design Vision GTI from this year's Wörthersee festival. That unit produced an epic 503 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque.
Don't expect a production unit with that level of power (although it would make a hardy RS4 powerplant), though. In reality, AutoWeek is suspecting anywhere from 340 to 450 horsepower from the new mill. When it arrives at an undisclosed date in the future, it'll likely be found in the Passat and Passat CC as well as the production version of the CrossBlue.
Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia
Tue, 20 Aug 2013Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.
VW Jetta TDI Value Edition drops price of diesel ownership to $21,295*
Wed, 08 Jan 2014Getting a new diesel-powered car just got a bit easier. Volkswagen has announced a new Jetta TDI Value Edition for 2014 that trims over $2,000 off the starting price of a Jetta TDI, making the most affordable diesel-powered car in America even more so. Prices start at $21,295 (*plus $820 for destination) for a Value Edition with a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed dual-clutch automatic adds $1,100 to the price. For that money, owners will get 140 horsepower, 236 pound-feet of torque and 42 miles per gallon on the freeway.
Despite the lower price and being down on content versus the previous base Jetta TDI, the Value Edition does come quite well equipped, with standard heated cloth seats, a six-speaker stereo with a Media Device Interface, satellite radio, and one-touch, up-down power windows on all four doors. Customers will be giving up some notable stuff though, including tilt/telescopic steering, Bluetooth streaming audio, power seats and a multi-function steering wheel.
Still, if you're aching to get your hands on a new TDI, this is now the most affordable way to do it. We suspect having the lower MSRP will help the German manufacturer make even further diesel-powered inroads here in the States, a land where they cleared their decks of over 100,000 TDI models in 2013.
