1982 VW Westfalia Diesel 1.6L with DK transmission

If you are looking at this listing, you probably have a good idea of what these are about.  I bought this Westy three years ago with the hope to restore it and put a 1.9L AAZ engine in it.  However, I now live abroad and find myself with less time in the USA and subsequently less time to dedicate to the project.  Therefore, the Westy sits most of the year in storage, and it deserve better than that.

The van is overall quite solid with normal wear and tear of a used vehicle going on 32 years old.  To make it "new" again, you will need to dedicate some time and money, but the van is perfectly drive-able and functional as is.  I have driven, albeit slowly, all over Wyoming and Colorado the past three years and have enjoyed my time in it.

Here is the good:
  • Solid 1.6L Turbo Diesel engine taken from a Rabbit.  Starts up easily and runs well.  However, I would definitely like to take it to a good diesel mechanic to get it tuned up correctly as I think this should make the engine run stronger on the top end and stay more consistently at high speeds.
    • Currently:  flat highway = 50-55 mph; slight to medium uphill grade = 40-50 mph; steep uphill grade (Rocky Mtn passes) = 30 - 35 mph.  This is pretty good for a 1.6L!
  • Interior and camping equipment all in good shape.  Stove, fridge, and water supply all functional. Canvas in good shape with no rips (a few small holes in the netting).  Rear netting included.
  • Brand new Hankook Radial RA08 185R14C tires installed.  These are great tires for this van - smooth and stable.
  • DK transmission
  • Mechanics and electrical all in working order.
Here is the bad:
  • Exterior needs work.  No major issues, but it definitely is a used van.  It hasn't been in Grandpa's Arizona shed for the past 30 years.
  • I would probably want to replace the rear bed cushion at some point.  It is just a little ripped and old.
  • Peeling interior panels.  I was going to simply "re-do" the interior anyway, but the panels are peeling from age.
Other than that, the van is what it is!  My friends keep imploring me not to sell it, but I just don't have the time to do what I want with it.

I can deliver the van to Saratoga, Walcott, Rawlins, or Laramie, Wyoming.  I can also deliver it to Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

VW makes $23K on every Porsche sold, more than Bentley or Lamborghini

Fri, 14 Mar 2014

It's a good time to be in the luxury car business. In Volkswagen Group's financial report for the 2013 fiscal year, it is revealed that that Porsche enjoyed an operating margin of 18 percent. That means the Stuttgart brand made on average about $23,200 per car sold, according to BusinessWeek. Bentley wasn't far behind, and Audi (which was combined with Lamborghini) posted a 10.1 percent margin. This compares to only around 2.9 percent for the Volkswagen brand.
"Luxury brands are on fire," said Dave Sullivan, an industry analyst at AutoPacific. He said that the average profit margin is between six and eight percent. Brands like Porsche and Bentley have the benefit of competing in rarefied markets. Buyers looking at one their vehicles have fewer models to shop against and don't care as much about price. They can also charge more for options, which further boosts income, according to BusinessWeek.
In a way, we should be more impressed by the continued success from Audi. Its models generally have direct competitors in every segment from the other premium automakers. Plus, their buyers aren't the captains of industry who are shopping for a Bentley. Still, the Four Rings is leading rivals in sales so far this year.

Volkswagen lays off 500 Chattanooga workers

Fri, 19 Apr 2013

The redesigned Volkswagen Passat has been a decent seller since its debut in 2011, but sales have apparently dropped off enough that the automaker is trimming some of the employees from its Chattanooga, TN assembly plant. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen will be cutting shifts and laying off 500 contracted workers in response to slowing sales.
Currently, the plant has three teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Saturday, but starting May 13, this will be reduced down to two teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. This will be done to reduce dealer inventory (the article says that VW dealers, on average, have a 97-day supply of Passats) and production capacity (currently running at an annual pace of 170,000 units, which is more than the 150,000 annual units the plant was planned to produce).
This, of course, isn't saying that the Passat has been a failure since VW added 200 full-time employees to the plant in February 2012 to keep up with increased demand. The AN article says that automakers frequently overstaff plants during the launch of a new product - or in this case, a new product and a new plant - but eventually reduce the workers as things run smoother and more efficiently.

VW announces recall of 26,000 2014 models with 1.8T engines

Tue, 22 Apr 2014

Volkswagen has followed up on a stop-sale order from earlier this month, announcing a voluntarily recall of 26,400 vehicles that are powered by the brand's 1.8-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The new mill replaced the despised 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Beetle Convertible last year. Weirdly, though, of the 26,452 units covered in the recall, only 1,655 are customer vehicles.
According to VW, the affected models were built between February 1 and April 6 of this year, and feature bad O-ring seals in the transmission oil cooler. Apparently, the faulty O-rings could cause a fluid leak, as they won't seal between the oil cooler and transmission. VW is blaming a material change from a supplier for the problem.
There have been no fires, injuries, accidents or fatalities relating to this issue, which VW will be fixing free of charge. Customers will need to report to dealers to have the O-rings replaced.
