I’m the fourth owner of this well-kept 944 Turbo. It’s completely stock with the exception of the stereo and wheels. The first two owners drove it sparingly, averaging around 4000-4500 miles/year. With about 84,000 miles on the clock, the third owner picked it up in 2005 and took it on a trip from CA to Vegas. A post-purchase inspection revealed a few leaks that had developed over the years and he started working on a plan to pull it apart and make it like new again. Fast forward to 2008 – the economy had crashed and he still hadn’t started on the reseal and rebuild as he wanted. He decided to finally tackle it and thought that taking the engine out, doing a complete restoration and reseal and getting the engine to showroom condition was the way to go. He was a huge Porsche enthusiast and had plenty of experience so the project was well within his capabilities. Unfortunately, didn’t get far before marital and financial trouble made him abandon the project. He didn’t give up completely until 2012 when he realized that he needed to pass it along to someone else. I’ve since taken my time getting the car back to its former glory. I’m happy with the results and now have a very nice leak-free 951 to pass on to a new owner.

Everything works on the car: AC blows cold (converted to R134), windows work, sunroof works, turbo boosts as it should, clutch is solid (replaced by a former owner), doors work, hood and hatch struts work, original paint is nearly perfect, runs great. The last owner had it as non-op and when I took it in for a smog test to get it registered again it failed for running rich. Passed easily the second time in. I have a stack of service records from the previous owners included along with the original owner’s manual, tool kit and spare tire.

I was keeping track of what I put into it but stopped counting when parts got over $3K and the list got too long for me to remember (I know I’m over $5K but not sure where it stopped). I’m looking for someone who appreciates these cars and sees the value in a well-cared for 1986 944 Turbo.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Good luck and thanks for looking!

China bans military license plates on luxury autos

Wed, 01 May 2013

Driving a vehicle with a military license plate in China provides many privileges. Legally reserved for official vehicles only, the designation apparently allows drivers to enjoy special liberties on the roads, including breaking traffic laws, filling up with free fuel and receiving light-and-siren escorts through congested cities. So attractive are the benefits that there is a secondary market for used legal and counterfeit plates - especially among those wealthy enough to afford luxury cars. But all of that is reportedly coming to an end, as President Xi Jinping, chairman of the Central Military Commission, is on a mission to fight corruption in his country.
A new license plate system goes into effect today, and it is designed to "maintain social harmony, stability and the reputation of the military," says the PLA Daily, the armed forces' official newspaper. While the abuse has been going on for many years, the internet has put the spotlight on the bad behavior, and the negative press does not represent the morals and true colors of the armed forces, say officials.
While military-plated Porsche drivers have been singled out as offenders, Bloomberg notes that all vehicles with engine displacements above 3.0 liters and with a sticker price in excess of about $73,000, will be banned from receiving military plates. This includes vehicles from Audi, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln and the Volkswagen Phaeton. Even if drivers are savvy enough to circumvent the new issuing system, the military has put technology at toll gates to catch users of counterfeit plates. There has been no word on the punishment if caught.

1949 Gm?nd Porsche shows the birth of an icon

Fri, 21 Mar 2014

The Austrian village of Gmünd is more than just difficult to pronounce; it's also the birthplace of the Porsche brand. Before the company ever started building sports cars at its current home base near Stuttgart, the fledgling business completed several vehicles in the tiny town in Southern Austria. In this video, former Pikes Peak International Hill Climb champion Jeff Zwart takes a look at a 1949 Gmünd coupe to see how the company has evolved since its earliest days.
The thing to note about the Gmünd-built Porsches is their absolute design simplicity. The phrase "form follows function" gets bandied around a lot, but it really means something when you look at these early cars. However, the minimalism was partially out of necessity. The vehicles were meant to be sporty but certainly weren't rockets. Power came courtesy of a modified Volkswagen Beetle engine, and anything extraneous would have slowed the models down. Scroll down to watch Zwart go back in time to Porsche's beginnings.

Porsche Macan caught completely uncovered

Wed, 31 Jul 2013

Porsche is preparing to launch its sub-Cayenne CUV, with a suspected debut at the 2013 Los Angeles International Auto Show, which means we're right about at the point where undisguised models start scampering around the cities and towns of Germany. Our spy photographers snagged just such a model, with only the headlights and taillights concealed by camouflage (no, those comically large lamps aren't a production item).
The undisguised car looks like a tiny Cayenne. Not really surprising, we know, but it's impressive to see how the Cayenne's styling works with the smaller proportions of the Macan. It looks squat, athletic and poised, like it's a small, "sporty" crossover we'd actually want to drive. Both the Macan and the Macan Turbo are shown, with the more powerful model sporting a set of quad exhausts.
The only big questions now concern the shape of the lights and the interior. From the photos, we can see a rough outline of the headlights, although the taillights are more difficult to discern. The interior remains a mystery.
