1979 Pontiac Trans Am on 2040-cars

Year:1979 Mileage:125930
Location:

Au Gres, Michigan, United States

Au Gres, Michigan, United States

I have a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with the WS6 option, meaning it has rear disc brakes, T-tops, and 8" wheels.  I purchased the car in 1998, it has not been driven since 2007.  I recently unearthed it out of our storage barn and it does run and drive.  The odometer reads 25,930, which we are assuming means 125,930.

I will start by listing the good things about the car:

  • New radiator (4 core copper)
  • Newer gas tank
  • Newer Panasonic cd player
  • Newer battery
  • Three new electronic cooling fans wired with relay
  • Front end has all new Moog ball joints and all new control arm bushings, also has new high tension front coil springs
  • New high lift rear leaf springs
  • New starter
  • Power windows work
  • Rear end ring and pinion has been swapped from 2.73 to 3.42 (gear swap really brought the car to life)
  • Automatic 400 turbo transmission shifts excellent
  • Car is equipped with a line locker that blocks fluid to the rear brakes for easy burnouts (works as it should with the touch of a button)
  • New driveshaft with new universal joints
  • Newer Edelbrock 750 carburetor (2002)
  • ALL new brake lines
  • Trunk opens and closes as it should
  • Original t-top covers
  • Engine has been rebuilt using
  • ---Kenne Bell 9.5-1 hypereutectic pistons
  • ---Balanced crankshaft
  • ---Kenne Bell camshaft/lifters
  • ---Kenne Bell high rise aluminum intake
  • ---Kenne Bell aluminum valve covers
  • ---High pressure/high volume oil pump
  • ---Kenne Bell adjustable timing chain
  • Car has been stored inside at all times since I have purchased it.

The bad things to the best of my knowledge:

  • Motor is a 455 Buick which is not meant for the car
  • Old rotten gas has had a bad effect on the carburetor which will need to be torn apart and cleaned (engine does run decent, the car is drivable just doesn't run perfect)
  • In the process of doing a burnout at a car show both rear tires exploded and the cords slapped the rear quarter panels messing up the paint and fender flares
  • There is a 1 rust spot on the hood and 2 spots on the RF fender, some rust on the bottom of the RF door, interior dash panel has 2 rust holes in it.
  • This car is a Michigan car so there is rust all underneath on the frame, exhaust, etc
  • There is no wiper motor or linkage
  • Could use new weather stripping
  • Headliner is starting to come down
  • Needs new exhaust tailpipes
  • All the tires hold air but need to be replaced, especially the front ones
  • Bats made it into the barn we stored it in, and dropped poop on the car, it will need to be buffed to restore the shine to the paint
  • Dipstick is broken
  • Shaker is in the back seat, it does have a hole in the fiberglass, and doesn't fit exactly how it should on the car, I am thinking it is for a different model.
  • Good or bad, take it how you want, trunk has been modified to accept add on radiator for extra cooling capacity

Bottom line on this car is that if you are looking to win best in show this is NOT the car to restore.  I bought the car and used it to have fun, not to be looked at. This car is a lot of fun and actually has the record for doing the longest length burnout at a Michigan car show.  With a little tune up work this Buick 455 engine runs amazing and could be driven for fun, or there are tons of great parts on it that you could use to fix up a different Trans Am.

Trans Am Depot teases 2014 GTO

Mon, 24 Jun 2013

Here comes the Judge. Court is in session. The verdict is in. How many more tired clichés can we come up with? It hardly seems to matter, because it's happening: Trans Am Depot has announced via the teaser video below that it is launching a 2014 GTO, complete with Carousel Red (bright orange, really) paint and full Judge badging.
The car is based on Trans Am Depot's 6T9 Goat, which, in case you don't get the reverential references, is meant to mimic the look of the 1969 Pontiac GTO. As with the company's other cars -including the 2013 Hurst Edition Trans Am we recently drove - the GTO will be based on the current Chevy Camaro, which means two doors, V8 engines and rear-wheel drive, just like the muscle cars of days past.
As for actual details of what's under the 2014 GTO's hood, we're completely left hanging. We'd expect some sort of power adder (turbo, supercharger or possibly some other form of a highly massaged version of the Camaro's V8), and we certainly know that GM has any number of hi-po crate engines to choose from.

Aficionauto sits down with The Hoff and KITT

Fri, 10 Oct 2014

The latest video from The Aficionauto is the perfect palate cleanser for Knight Rider fans after finding out that Justin Bieber is the voice of KITT in an upcoming film. Host Christopher Rutkowski says that the Knight Industries Two Thousand is one of the most requested vehicles to appear on the series and for good reason - Michael Knight's Pontiac Trans-Am is among the most famous cars to ever appear on television.
While the video isn't able to showcase one of the original KITTs from the series, it does get star David Hasselhoff to drive his personal replica and talk about the lasting legacy of the show. The highlight here might be seeing The Hoff back behind the wheel in the open desert basically recreating Knight Rider's opening sequence.
With all of its flashing lights and gizmos, you can probably make the argument that KITT is pretty cheesy, and the show itself was never exactly a pillar of high-quality drama on television. Despite that, the series still provides a ton of good-natured fun, and The Hoff's continued enthusiasm for it is pretty infectious. Check out The Aficionauto video to take another ride with Knight Rider.

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
