1938 Chrysler C-20 New York Special CoupeNon-Production Car, Special Order Only......please be patient while the many photos load.....Extremely rare 1938 Chrysler C20 New York Special Coupe, available in 1938 by special order only, built on the C-19 business coupe platform, badged as the New York Special and heavily equipped with the powerful C-20 straight 8 engine plus the overdrive option. This unique Chrysler has been in California since new and may very possibly be the only one of it's kind in existence. Letters from then Chrysler Vice President of the Sales Division writes of the need for a car "not as large as a Custom Imperial, but with interior trim and other appointments comparable to the Custom line; in short, a car which would appeal to the present owners of Airflows." It would include these upgrades that separate it from it's standard C19 counterpart: Chrome wheel rings, special steering wheel with remote control horn ring, six-ply tires, electric clock on dash, and glove-box lock. the front grille with every other bar painted black (this example was re-chromed at some point and should be returned to it's original state) and luxury springs in the seat cushions. It also included carpeted front floor, 20 gallon capacity fuel tank, instrument panel finished to harmonize with the upgraded Laidlaw custom-grade upholstery and interior trim. The New York Specials were considered a Chrysler though they were built on the Imperial Chassis and used the big Custom Imperial C-20 engine. As listed in contemporary reference sources, the New York Special line consisted of a Business coupe and Touring sedan. However, no coupes are known to have been built making this example extremely rare. (See Jerry Heasley's Production Figure Book for US Cars, ISBN-13: 9780879380427). In an attached letter from the Chrysler Historical Collection dated November 28, 1984 then Executive Correspondence Manager states: "I am sending you the enclosed information Chrysler Corporation distributed to their dealers in late 1937 and early 1938 concerning the New York Special. As you can see, the letters dated December 27th, 1937 and February 24, 1938 both refer to a New York Special Coupe. This model appears to have had extremely limited production as we have no further reference to it anywhere in the Historical Collection. It seems that you have a very rare and special car." The letters below show that this car was only available as a non-cancellable, special order only basis. Chrysler called out over lackluster Ram Runner by racer who helped develop it
Fri, 11 Apr 2014Fans of off-roading and desert blasting might recall that Chrysler offers an aftermarket conversion that can turn a Ram 1500 into a road-legal desert racer, called the Ram Runner. The kit, sold through Mopar, includes some significant suspension upgrades, body tweaks and a brawnier cat-back exhaust for the truck's 5.7-liter V8.
Considering all of this, comparisons with the almighty Ford F-150 SVT Raptor are common. Among the off-road community, that makes these two a sort of Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang for people that prefer driving on dirt. In the Race-Dezert forum, the discussion as to which truck was better was proceeding as normal - Ram fans said their piece and Ford fans said theirs. Then, a man named Kent Kroeker offered up his two cents.
See, Kroeker is a Baja racer, and the man that helped develop the Ram Runner. Despite his association with the truck, though, he had some less than kind words for Chrysler and the Ram Runner.
Chrysler stays IPO until 2014
Mon, 25 Nov 2013There will not be a Chrysler IPO in 2013. Fiat, according to a report from Forbes, has announced that it will not be able to make the American brand's initial public offering before the end of the year, saying that the short, five-week window that makes up the rest of 2013 is "not practicable."
Not surprisingly, the issue with the Chrysler IPO is the same as it's always been - a disagreement between parent company Fiat, which owns 58.5 percent of the Chrysler Group and a UAW healthcare trust, which owns 41.5 percent. Fiat wants to buy out the UAW VEBA healthcare trust, which is responsible for shouldering retiree healthcare costs, but the two sides are hung up on an actual price tag for the remaining two-fifths of the company.
The original idea saw an IPO as a way of setting a fair market price for the remaining shares, although it's not entirely clear what broke down and led to a delay of the IPO plan. As Forbes points out, by waiting until 2014, Chrysler could be risking a cool-off in the IPO market, which could mean less money in its pocket when the automaker finally goes public.
Fiat Chrysler quietly sends Pentastar logo out to pasture
Wed, 05 Nov 2014Logos come and go, and in the case of the famed Chrysler Pentastar, it's on its way back out. The well-known five-sided emblem, which sits prominently atop the massive Chrysler Technical Center complex in Auburn Hills, MI, is officially going to be phased out now that the company has united with Fiat and formed the new Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
As a nearly 50-year-old icon, though, the fate of the Pentastar has been deeply intertwined with Chrysler's history. Hemmings has an excellent recap of that history, from its development in 1962 by a Chrysler ad agency through to its temporary discontinuation during the disastrous marriage between the American company and Daimler-Benz, and then on to its revival during the time the automaker regained its independence.
If you've been a fan of Chrysler and its brands over the years, you're going to want to give this piece a read. Head over and take a look.
