You are viewing my 1968 Cadillac Eldorado with a 472 cu in engine rated at 375 horsepower and automatic transmission.  This car also comes with disc brakes that became standard in 1968.  I purchased this car in August of 2011 from a nice gentleman in Erie, PA who had owned it for about ten years and sold it simply because he didn't feel he drove it enough.  As he told it, he only took this fine Cadillac out once or twice a summer to "keep it limbered up" as he put it.  Having bought it sight unseen, I was extremely pleased with its condition when it finally did arrive along with nine other cars a couple friends and I had arranged to have shipped in on two trucks all at the same time.  I remember that day quite clearly, as the event was a subject of some anticipation for everyone involved, and remember even more distinctly that to my taste this '68 Eldorado was the finest car that came off the trucks that day.

I set to making improvements right away.  One of my favorite parts of the classic car hobby is taking a car like this one that is rust-free and pampered and extremely well-preserved, garage-kept and generally taken care of with the degree of stewardship we all like to see, and doing those little things that would enable the next owner of the car to drive it daily in comfort and ease if they so desired.  This one had a bit of a rough idle, so I added the following:

  • rebuilt carburetor from Autoline (I kept the original)
  • electronic ignition upgrade
  • new distributor and any ignition parts not in the EI kit
  • full professional tune-up

All the items/installations listed above were done by a professional mechanic with more than 30 years experience.  And what a difference it made!  You could store this car all winter, go in to your garage, press the pedal a few times, turn the key, and she starts almost immediately and settles in a wonderful idle as if you'd driven it to work that morning.

This car was in such great shape that it needed nothing more.  The brakes are fantastic, the power windows all work great, the power antenna and radio are perfect, the seats move like new. Cigarette lighter does its job, the temperature and fuel gauges function beautifully.  The only item I didn't tend to is the A/C, because its not something I worry too much about, but the new owner can certainly make that his or her contribution to the preservation of this piece of history.

I have always run a generous fuel mixture being that these engines were made to run on leaded, high-octane fuel back when gas was untainted by ethanol.  So the mix she typically gets is three parts 91 no-eth and one part 110 octane racing fuel.  My guess is this bumps the octane up right about where it needs to be and the way it purrs tends to support my intuition.

Of those ten cars that came off the truck two years ago this is the last car standing.  Of all those it will be the hardest to sell by far.  I can completely understand why this was THE car to have we it was unveiled in 1967, and why guys like Dean Martin and Elvis Presley owned one.  Bill Mitchell did one heck of a job on this design.  The crisp lines are as timeless and elegant as any American car ever produced.  If anyone would like to see her in person, please let me know and we can arrange a time to do so.  In fact, I would really prefer to meet the new owner in person just for the assurance that this car is going to a good home.

2013 Cadillac ATS Premium 2.0T 6MT

Wed, 06 Feb 2013

The new Cadillac ATS is an impressive sport sedan, often considered one of the most serious threats to the BMW 3 Series. Unlike GM's previous attempts, this four door brings aggressive styling, commendable chassis dynamics and class-leading handling to the highly competitive battle. And, like its daunting German foe, Cadillac offer several powertrain choices.
I recently spent time with the ATS 2.0T Premium on my home California turf. Fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with a limited-slip rear differential, my tester was lightly optioned, with only a paint upgrade and a cold weather package. That brought the as-tested price to $46,305, configured the way I imagine most enthusiasts would prefer. This meant I fully expected to enjoy a week with a tossable sport sedan that boasted "fun-to-drive" as its middle name, but all was not well...

Cadillac LTS flagship to bow at NY Auto Show

Wed, 06 Aug 2014

There is widespread agreement across the industry that Cadillac needs a proper, rear-drive flagship sedan that completes legitimately with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series.
Fortunately, the same view is held within the company, and just such a car - possibly dubbed LTS - is under development. According to a high-level source at Cadillac, the new four-door, which is said to incorporate design cues from the marque's celebrated Elmiraj coupe concept, will debut at the New York Auto Show next April.
If the car needs a cheerleader, surely incoming president Johan de Nysschen is just such a person. De Nysschen doesn't arrive at Cadillac until late in the month, but certainly he will want a proper flagship to do battle with his old foes at Mercedes-Benz and BMW and old friends at Audi and Infiniti.
