1991 850i Bmw With Stage 3 Dinan Performance Package on 2040-cars

This 850i was purchased new in 1991 by Donald Rojas of Austin Texas. In April of 1994 Donald sent the car to Dinan Engineering in Mountain View California for a Stage 3 factory performance conversion. At the time of the conversion, the 850 mileage was 36,248 miles. This is one of only seven 850i stage 3 conversions performed by Dinan. The conversion consisted of creating a CSI base, increasing the engine displacement to 5.6 liters, same as the later 850 CSI, installing twin turbochargers and intercoolers, New computer chips for the engine and transmission, free flow exhaust system, high flow intake manifolds, transmission cooler, high stall torque converter, improved brake and suspension systems, and other improvements all of which are listed in one of the photos. The engine was then dynamometer tested showing 607 horsepower at 5,500 RPM and 666 foot pounds of torque at 4,500 RPM (graph in photo).

The 850 was sold to Jay Cooper from Edmond Oklahoma in 2005 and then purchased by me in 2006.  At approximately 65,000 miles, an engine ticking noise was noted that sounded like a valve train noise, after over a decade since the conversion this seemed like a good time to refresh everything under the hood from the big stuff to hoses, belts, etc.  The engine was sent to Dinan Engineering for an engine rebuild, overkill but since the engine was out it seemed like a good idea.

Golz in Deerfield Illinois rebuilt the heads including new lifters and other valve train components before assembling the heads to the new engine block assembly from Dinan. Since the  engine was out of the vehicle and the 850 had accumulated 65,000 miles, it was decided to replace all the other mechanical components such as the water pump, fan clutch and blades, all belts and hoses, new improved turbochargers and waste gate valves, new DK motors, steering box, and other components as listed in the photo.

The 850 has been well cared for. The body, paint and upholstery are totally original. It is absolutely free of rust and in excellent mechanical condition. I have had it insured as a classic car by Hagerty Insurance and it has only been driven to car shows and other special occasions the past several years.

There's no substitution for BMW's E30 Mmmmm3

Mon, 17 Jun 2013

If you told someone that you had a friend with a four-cylinder BMW who "would let me wash the car," and in exchange for the privilege then let you drive that clean BMW once around the block, your first question would probably be "What kind of BMW is this?" There's a chance you wouldn't be surprised once you found out the coupe in question was the E30 M3, a car our own Zach Bowman dubbed the "Mmmmm3."
Petrolicious talks to Gabor Mester about the car he fell in love with, a black version of the original "Munich mauler" that was owned by the parents of a high-school friend - oh, and Mester was also in high school when this washing and driving took place. When the original owners were ready to sell, Mestor was ready to buy, and he hasn't had a single regret about it since.
You can enjoy his story in his words in the video below.

Ward's reveals annual 10 Best Engines list for 2013

Thu, 13 Dec 2012

Ward's Auto has released its annual 10 Best Engines award winners. The 2013 list covers the full width and breadth of the internal combustion spectrum, from a spate of efficient four-cylinders to the most powerful production V8 on the planet. As always, the entries must be available in a production vehicle in the first quarter of 2013 with an MSRP of less than $55,000. The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 from the Audi S5 held on for the fourth consecutive year, and BMW earned two spots on the list with its turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder and turbo 3.0-liter inline-six.
Ford pulled in two awards for its 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and and the supercharged 5.8-liter V8 from the Shelby GT500. Honda matched BMW and Ford with two wins of its own. Wards awarded the 2.4-liter four-cylinder from the Honda Accord Sport as well as the 3.5-liter V6 from the Honda Accord. Chrysler, General Motors and Subaru each garnered a spot on the list as well for the 3.6-liter V6 in the Ram 1500, the turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the Cadillac ATS and the 2.0-liter four-cylinder the Subaru BRZ, respectively. BMW offering Track Handling Package for 2 Series

Thu, 17 Apr 2014

After getting a chance to drive the BMW M235i earlier this year, we mentioned our regret at not being able to sample the lighter and less powerful 228i Coupe. We'd like to have seen how close the latter could get to the former, noting that "there's a lot of room for upgrades with the $11,000 retail difference." BMW is closing that performance gap slightly, announcing that a Track Handling Package will join the options sheet for the 2015 228i Coupe.
The group bolts on Variable Sport Steering, Adaptive M Suspension and M Sport Brakes behind new 18-inch lightweight wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. There's no change to the 240-horsepower four-cylinder, but a coupe so equipped should be able to do plenty more with the horses it has thanks to a faster steering rack, sharper handling due to additional sensors and a ten-millimeter drop in ride height, and larger brakes and discs.
BMW has used the New York Auto Show as a venue to introduce the new Track Handling Package, and it will roll onto showroom floors in July and pricing will be announced sometime between now and then. Takers can get it with both the six-speed manual and eight-speed Sport Automatic, see it in the high-res image gallery above, and read about it in the press release below.
