This 57 is a ground up build. I finished it in 2012 and have been driving it, weather permitting, since then. The car has a bad ass sinister look to ity that catches a lot of attention wherever I take it. It's popped up all over the internet over the last couple years so it might look familiar to you. Recently I was invited to meet with Gene Winfield and the Chop Shop Crew at the Boston Autorama and show Gene how I did the chop and we duplicated it right at the show last month. There's an article at hotrod.com in the "Events" section. Ebay won't let me paste a link here for some reason . CHASSIS The original frame was a boxed "California frame" and was in good shape. not wrecked or rusted. I put 8" C notches in back. I cut the frame at the firewall and swapped in an 81 Camaro sub frame and welded it in about 4" up so the car has a built in slam even with 20" wheels up front I can cruize with the front end dropped and the suspension is operating in it's sweet spot, in mid range,.. The Camaro subframe is 4" too wide for the 57 so I cut 2" out of the crossmember and 1" out of each upper and lower control arm to get the right track width. Then I opened up the front spring pockets to 8" diameter to handle 7" Slam Specialties air bags. All steering components, bearings, bushings, etc are new. All steering linkage including the power steering box are new. The whole 4 wheel disc brake system is new, dual diaphram master, prop valve, lines, calipers, rotors, pads, all new. New PPV "plastic" 20 gallon gas tank, lines, pump, and Corvette regulator. The rear end is an 8.8 Ford with 373 gears, locker, disc brake unit with new bearings and seals. S & W coil overs and Comp Engineering 3 link. The car has power steering and power brakes. The wheels are American Racing Torque Thrust M's. 20's in front, 22's in back. There's a 7 gallon compressed air tank and a ViAir 450 compressor for the air ride system DRIVETRAIN The engine, trans and PCM are a pull out from a 2002 Camaro with 30,000 miles. All I needed to do was fluids, filters, flush the fuel rails, clean the injectors and rewire the harness. The PCM was sent out to be reflashed. The programming was only to eliminate EGR, VATS downstream O2 sensors, etc. The operating perameters for the engine and trans are left at the original settings.P/S pump was modified to work with the Saginaw style steering box. New A/C compressor and Cold Air system designed specifically for the 57 Chevy. All A/C lines and components are new. New Painless 21 circuit wiring harness. The engine is a 320HP version and runs well, no problems. The trans shifts as it should and has no problems. BODY The body was very clean when I got the car. It needed some minor repair but it is solid. No rust underneath. The floors are solid, inner and outer rockers and floor braces are all clean and painted with red primer. The trunk floor was cut out and modified to clear the C notches and dropped rear and allow a 20 gallon tank. There are 40" tubs in back that go up to the package tray. Plenty of clearance for the 22" wheels and 31" tires. The front is also tubbed The roof is a blend of some 57 and some 59 Chevy parts. There is a 1 1/2" chop on the front windshield which is a cut down 57 windshield. The side rails are and back glass are 59 and the roof skin is 57. Rear glass is 59. The hood was smoothed out by cutting the 57 skin off of the hood frame and welding on a 58 Chevy hood skin. The rest of the body is stock. The front fender on the passenger side popped a rust bubble about the size of a nickle all the way down on the bottom behind the wheel opening. Don't know what happened there but I'm not messing with it. The left fender is clean. I noticed when I was building the car that the left fender had a new lower half. It was done right so I used it. The doors are both very clean originals. Both quarter panels are replaced with new full panels. One piece top to bottom. The hood and deck lid are also clean originals. The paint is an industrial primer that has UV protection in it.There hasn't been any fading since I painted it. The bumpers, grille, and hood bar set are new aftermarket. I had good originals but rechroming them would have cost more than double what the new ones cost. I hated to do it but I got the new ones. The side trim is OEM stainless. INTERIOR The seats are used 2006 Monte Carlo. Console and shifter are from a Ford Fusion. Carpet is new and interior door trim panels are custom made. Headliner is new and all the interior garnish mouldings are cut, welded and installed. Rebuilt GM tilt column. Gas and temp gages are rebuilt originals and speedometer is a SW 160MPH electronic. Windshield and side glass are new. The rear window is a used original. A/C operates off the original heater controls so there's no crappy looking billett control panel. I put late model 3 point seatbelts in from a 2006 Monte Carlo. This car has some drive time on it. It shows some minimal signs of wear but nothing bad. I have everything functioning except the speedometer. I haven't been able to straighten that out yet. I'm going to check my wiring to see if I can figure it out. It bugs me since it's a good speedo. I never intended this to be a show car. I've built them in the past and they sat in the garage because I was tired of driving them for a couple hours then spending all day cleaning waxing and polishing them. I wanted a bad ass agressive look and didn't want to worry about a stone chip or splashing water on the bottom. This took about two years to build (afternoons and weekends) and there's well over 1,000 hours of work in this build.

Next-gen GM SUVs caught wearing new boxy bodies [w/video]

Wed, 15 May 2013

We recently drove the brand-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and found it to be vastly improved compared to the outgoing model. And now that The General's pickup trucks have been squared away, it's time to focus our attention onto their passenger-friendly companions, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon (above).
Our spy photographers have passed along a huge smattering of photos (and a video), showing the new SUVs out testing. Both the short- and long-wheelbase models were spied, and while the overall shape of the vehicles hasn't changed all that much, we expect the updates to be substantial. In addition to new powertrain options, like GM's new small-block V8, we expect the interiors of both SUVs to get massive makeovers, providing better materials throughout their cabins and quieter, more refined environments. We even hear that some trick new suspension developments may be in store for upper-end models.
Visually, these spy shots allow us to see a couple of new details on the SUVs' front and rear fascias, including LED running lamps on the Yukon and some interesting LED taillamp treatments. Of course, the obvious third party missing from this set of photos is the Cadillac Escalade, but as we reported earlier, GM is working to further differentiate the 'Slade from the rest of the fullsize SUV lineup, and is working to make the new model "much less ostentatious."

2014 Chevrolet Cruze TD fires up its new diesel motor

Thu, 07 Feb 2013

Ever since General Motors confirmed plans to produce a diesel-powered Cruze back in 2011, we've been eagerly awaiting its arrival. And as part of the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, Chevrolet has pulled back the cover on its oil-burning compact sedan, set to go on sale in the near future with a starting price of $25,695, not including $810 for destination.
The heart and soul of the Cruze TD (that's its official name) is a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel inline four-cylinder engine rated at 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, mated solely to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine also has an overboost function that will increase torque to 280 lb-ft for up to ten seconds. The full brace of official specs haven't been released, but GM tells us that highway fuel economy will come in at 42 miles per gallon. If that number sounds familiar, it's because the Volkswagen Jetta TDI has the exact same rating. Unlike the Jetta, however, the Cruze TD can run on B20 biodiesel, where as the Volkswagen can only accept B5.
Model-specific changes to this 2014 Cruze TD include an aero kit and unique 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, there's a full leather interior, and Chevrolet will provide two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, not to mention a 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Race Recap: 2013 Indianapolis 500 better than Bollywood; all the emotion, none of the music [spoilers]

Mon, 27 May 2013

If the 2013 Indy 500 were a movie it would be the one expected to win all the little statues come awards season, and if it were an athlete it would have made spectators watch in awe as it broke record after record. And this kind of talk comes after last year's race was considered one of the best ever - the last lap hijinks in 2012 and Takuma Sato's crash leading to a podium ceremony straight out of a Golden Globes tearjerker.
But this year's race delivered more than anyone expected, from the 250,000 fans to the commentators to the IndyCar series itself and, finally, to the guy who hopped through a two-mile window on Lap 197 to take the lead and keep it until the end.
