 Description

THE GT 37 WAS ONLY MADE IN 701/2 AND IN 71 WITH ONLY 5802 BUILT. LAST PHOTO IS THE PHS AND TITLE.

HISTORY ON INTERNET: This car was actually based on the less expensive Tempest line.  By midyear, Pontiac simplified it Tempest hardtop to give it a more competitive price.  It was released as the T-37, which was aimed at entry-level buyers , although the “37 part of the designation was based on General Motors’ code for a two-door hardtop model, Pontiac soon bent the rules a bit and released a T-37 coupe (two-door sedan) as well as the hardtop.  With a $2,683 price tag, the cheap T-37 generated 9187 sales in half a year. It wasn’t long after the T-37 appeared that somebody decided to issue a sporty variation.

To create such a budget-priced muscle car, it was decided to dress up the plain-looking coupe with GTO-like extras and call it the GT-37. These cars had GTO fender striping, hood-pins, and GT-37 badging making it stand out above base Tempests in appearance. The new model was a stripped-down muscle car.  The fastest production car the Pontiac built in 1970 turned out to be the Tempest two-door sedan with the Ram Air III engine. The GT-37 was an option that could be put on a T-37. The GT-37 had the performance of a GTO without the cost. Pontiac used the phrase "There's a little GTO in every GT-37, and you don't have to be over 30 to afford it."  In 1970 the base GT-37 car came standard with a 350-2V.  Standard equipment for the 1970 ½ GT-37 included any Tempest V-8 with low-restriction dual exhaust with chrome splitter exhaust tips, a three-speed heavy-duty manual transmission with floor shift, G70-14 raised-white-letter tires, Rally II wheels rims, 1969 Judge-style fender stripes  a hood pin kit, a 140 MPH speedometer and special GT-37 Identification.   A rear deck airfoil or automatic M-35 two speed or M-38 three speed transmission was optional, but bucket seats were not available.
In 1971 the Tempest line was dropped by Pontiac and styling revisions to ’71 LeMans included redesigned grilles.  The lowest-priced Pontiac was again the T-37 coupe at $2,747.  There was a new four-door sedan that retailed for $2,795 and a two-door hardtop priced at $2,807.With its longer 116-inch wheelbase, the LeMans four-door sedan was not suited for the muscle market, since the extra-long stance added up to additional weight.  For the 1971 T-37 and GT-37 almost all sound treatment was deleted. This saved about 120 pounds.  Other features and equipment was also deleted. For example, there is only one coat hook and there is no Pontiac name plate in the grille resulting in a lightweight car that was great for performance. The two-door body styles stuck to a 112-inch wheelbase that made them lighter. The coupe weighed 3.445 pounds (with a V-8) and the hardtop was five pounds heavier.
The 1971 GT-37 package cost Pontiac dealers $187.47 and retailed for $236.97. It included vinyl accent stripes, Rally II wheels less trim rings, fat G70-14 white-letter tires, a dual exhaust system with chrome exhaust pipe extensions, a heavy-duty three-speed manual transmission with a floor-mounted gear shifter, body color outside rearview mirrors (with a remote-control left-hand mirror), hood locking pins, GT decals and a GT-37 nameplate.
