1955 MG TF 1250

After World War II the MG Company continued to produce the pre-war classic (and somewhat archaic design) called the TC.  This was an extremely popular car and basically only came in right hand drive.  After World War II every American manufacturer gave up the classic car design and went to semi-envelope styled bodies that made the lines of MG TC look even more archaic.  The MG company decided they did not want to give up the classic lines of design for their cars but decided to improve these lines with the TD making everything just a little bit slicker and this kept them in the running until they came up with the final rendition of their classic car design for MGs which was the TF.  The TF was considered the ultimate MG classic and it is easy to see why.  Just about everything is perfectly proportioned, the length is just right and the double humps on the dash add to the speedster look and the exposed trunk on the back fits right in.  The headlights flared into the fenders added that much needed aerodynamic look.   The MG TF came with either wire wheels or disk wheels and we at MissChiTown have our preference, which is disk wheels.

The car that is for sale in this ad is one of the two best colors you can paint an MG TF.  When you check out the video you will realize how crisp this MG looks.  The seller purchased this car in 1971 from the second owner.  It appears to have been well cared for all its life and has been well sorted out by the current owner and is ready for summer fun!  Most people don’t realize how spunky a MG TF is and this is partially because of the well-engineered motor and also because of its very lightweight.  If you love the MG post war classic car lines you will find that most collectors prefer the TF as the ultimate refinement in this classic car evolution.  Most people know that after the TF, MG came out with the totally enveloped design of the MGA.

There is not much more fun then driving a 1955 MG TF.  You have to love its long hood, spunky engine, slick 4-speed transmission and the low cut notched doors for resting your elbow.  Just imagine driving down the road with the wind blowing in your hair.

This car has a clear title in the owner’s name and the car has always been identified as a 1955 MG TF.  The car apparently was produced in 1954 as it shows in the registry as a 1954 produced car.  This is very common for cars that were produced at the end of the year and we are just bringing it to your attention for your reference.

This car for sale appears that it has aged well and still really looks great inside and out. The car was painted in 1975 and as you can see from the photos still looks very good.  The black interior is the same interior that has been in the car since purchased in 1971 but is not original.  Chrome is original and in very good condition; minor pits on tail light housing.  New brake cylinders and new master cylinder in 1980.  The stainless steel exhaust was put on in 1996.  The engine bay and chassis shows obvious signs of use but appear clean and well maintained. The wood trimmed dashboard hosts a complete set of clear and extremely nice gauges and controls.   During the 43 years the seller has owned the car he has kept it in very good condition and kept the car very well maintained.  The seller has indicated that it is not a 100 point car but an extremely nice car that still makes people stop and look.

Additionally, this 1955 MG is in real good physical condition and it simply begs to be driven often.  The current owner of this 1955 MG TF has obviously taken excellent care of this beautiful roadster as the 1974 paint job still photographs great. The interior is nice and clean and the matching soft top simply puts this sophisticated driver over the top. Mechanically, it runs well out on the open road with good power and impressive handling. Overall, its a true pleasure to drive because people just cant stop staring. An Unbeatable Value It would be almost impossible to find a finer example of a 1954 MG TF in this price range because this one is simply gorgeous throughout.

Excerpts from the Internet about these fabulous MG TFs.

The famed British sports car the MG was named after Morris Garages where the British sports car was founded and first built in the 1920s by Cecil Kimber. The most famous model built by MG was the two passenger sports car. Five variations of the two passenger sports car MG were built beginning in 1936 and ending in 1955. Those models included the TA, TB, TC, TD and lastly the TF. By the early 1950s the bulk of the MGs manufactured were being built for export into the United States where they found eager buyers who wanted a two-seat sports car at a time when no American car companies were producing such a vehicle.

It is believed by many that the success of the MG in America was the inspiration for the Chevrolet Corvette of 1953 and the Ford Thunderbird of 1955. The TF models featured many improvements and changes from the previous models including headlights that were faired into the fenders a sloping radiator grille with a separate radiator and a new pressurized cooling system.

For many sports car enthusiasts this MG TF represents the last of the original 2-seaters from England.  Still sporting curvaceous fenders and a spunky four-cylinder engine it's a delightful combination of ancient technology and very usable performance.

From day one the thing the English have done best is interiors and the MG shows off the careful workmanship of craftsmen who were artists as much as laborers. The simple bucket seats are inviting and comfortable yet hold you well enough for the sporting MG's performance capabilities. The slender banjo-style steering wheel is quite upright and sits in your lap, which is how performance drivers preferred it back in the day and the double-hump dashboard provides a sense of style in the simple cabin. The center-mounted Jaeger instruments surely made building left- and right-hand drive models easier and their octagonal faces mimic the MG badge's shape. The slender shifter for the 4-speed manual transmission clicks through the gears like a toggle switch and the pedals are well placed for spirited driving. And while these cars were never designed to be completely weather-tight the canvas roof and matching side curtains seal things up well enough that inclement weather won't put a damper on the party. The engine is the famous 1250 cc inline-four that lived in MGs for years and you'll quickly find that it's a mistake to judge it by its size. Less weight is the same as more power and for sheer driving delight few cars can match an MG being driven at 9/10ths.

This iconic sports car features a smooth-running four-cylinder engine with a four speed manual transmission and it is comfortably equipped for everyday driving.

More history of the 1953-1955 MG TF from the Internet

The MG TF represents the end of MG’s venerable T-Series. The TF roadster brought a more modern take to the TD that it replaced by being three inches lower, and sporting a sloping grill and faired-in headlights. The car’s dashboard was redesigned, with central octagon gauges (good for right- or left-hand drive), though there was still no gas gauge. Wire wheels were offered for the first time since the MG TC.

Like the MG TD, a 1,250-cc, XPAG inline-four engine was initially used to generate 54 hp.

.

The TF today looks like an elegant update of the MG TD.  The TF was a continuation of a line introduced prior to World War II, the brand-new Triumph TR2 and Austin-Healey 100 boasted full-width bodywork and 100 mph top speeds.  There were 9,600 TFs were sold, with 3,400 of those being the 1500 model, before the streamlined MGA arrived in 1955.

Today, the TF is considered the most desirable of the three post-war T-Series models, and this is reflected in prices of the best cars. Enthusiasts typically seek out the 1500 variant, though the 1250 still offers plenty of enjoyment at a slightly lower price.

All T-Series MGs are fairly robust mechanically, though some engine and transmission parts are becoming more difficult to find. Engines and transmissions should be relatively quiet, especially in first and second gear.

This particular MG TF 1250 has been owned by an MG enthusiast that has long ago sorted out the car completely.  If you have the winter blues and are looking for something to spunk up your spring and summer to make up for the horrendous winter that most of the people have experienced in December, January & February this could be the car to put a smile on your face.  We have seen many a muscle car collector take his first ride in a MG TF and immediately become a fan and future purchaser.
