1948 CHRYSLER NEW YORKER HISTORY

The Chrysler New Yorker was a premium automobile model by the Chrysler division of the Chrysler Corporation from 1940-1996, serving for several years as the brands flagship model. A trim level named the "New York Special" first appeared in 1938 and the "New Yorker" name debuted in 1939.

The New Yorker name helped define the Chrysler brand as a maker of upscale models priced and equipped above mainstream brands like Ford, Chevrolet/Pontiac, and Dodge/Plymouth. In its glory days it was viewed by many as completion to full luxury brands like Chrysler, Lincoln and Packard and other prestigious models.
After the war ended in 1945, the New Yorker became a separate series.

Unlike most car companies, Chrysler did not make major changes with each model year from 1946 through 1948. Thus models for 1946 through 1948 Chryslers have the same basic appearance, noted for their 'harmonica' grille, based on the body introduced with the 1941 models. 1947 brought minor redesigns / improvements in tires, trim, and instrument panel. The 1948 New Yorker remained largely the same as the 1947 model.

Postwar Chryslers continued to offer Fluid Drive, and, by 1948 the luxurious New Yorker now offered the true four speed semi-automatic transmission.

HISTORY OF THIS PARTICULAR 1948 CHRYSLER NEW YORKER

As is the case with the large majority of our vehicles, this classic 1948 Chrysler comes to us as a referral from a long standing customer and friend of Classic Cars Ltd. The car has "lived" in dry Northern California for virtually its entire life and is being sold only as a result of the dissolution of the owner's estate. The family has decided that the car would not receive regular use and should be passed on to a new "Caregiver" that will appreciate the New Yorker and give it the tender loving care that this classic Chrysler deserves.

Prior to his passing, the car's owner was actively involved in managing the cars complete and proper restoration that was completed 100% by professional craftsmen. Not only was the restoration effort comprehensive, it was done to a high standard with considerable attention to detail. As auto enthusiasts / collectors can attest, the "Devil is in the Details" and the difference between a good and superb restoration is readily identified by the quality of the workmanship and the components that were utilized.

The Chrysler reflects a commitment to maintaining the cars originality but, at the same time, improving the quality of everything from the cosmetics (paint, interior, convertible top, etc.) to its mechanical condition making the car "Better than New" in virtually every respect. It is important to note that during his ownership the car always received ongoing care and maintenance. A recent complete safety inspection confirms that the Chrysler is in excellent mechanical condition with no needs being identified and a statement from the independent inspection facility that said "This is an exceptional example of a Chrysler that has seen the benefit of a complete and proper restoration."

OVERALL CONDITION SUMMARY

In a word, magnificent. We find it difficult to find suitable adjectives to describe quality and elegance of this late 1940's Chrysler New Yorker. As a totally solid, rust free car, this '48 Chrysler was the perfect car for a complete #1 show quality restoration. Since the restoration, the car has been very well cared for and remains in absolutely beautiful condition. As the photos suggest the large body panels are extremely straight and the paint is totally smooth and free from all but the most minor imperfections that require close critical inspection to be noticed. The panel fit is excellent with solid closing doors, trunk and hood. The quality of the interior, top, chrome and trim are consistent with that of the finest restoration.

MECHANICAL

From a mechanical perspective the Chrysler New Yorker runs and drives as good as it looks. The file supports recent repairs to the starter and solenoid and other repairs to ensure that the car is totally reliable and mechanically strong. A complete mechanical evaluation was completed and all mechanical components were found to be in excellent condition.

The New Yorker starts immediately under all conditions and is a pleasure to drive. The Chrysler's unique "Fluid Drive" transmission is fully functional and allows the Chrysler to be driven in either "Semi-automatic" or manual mode. The Chrysler's in-line eight cylinder engine runs very smoothly and has excellent power. There is no hesitation in the engine and the car accelerates smoothly and quietly with no noises in the engine, transmission or drive-line. The clutch engages smoothly and there are no issues with shifting up or down through the gears. The brakes stop the car straight and the car does not wander or drift. The emergency brake is functional and the under dash light flashes (as designed) when the parking brake is engaged. The Chrysler is fitted with Coker wide whitewalls for a wonderful late 40's appearance.

The 1948 Chrysler is a classic example of the glory of automobiles from a bygone era and will not disappoint anyone who is looking for a rare late 40's Chrysler that can be driven regularly or shown at local / national car shows.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

- We have been shipping vehicles for years and have established excellent contacts that are not only high quality but very price competitive. We do not use brokers, terminal shipping or other discount, low quality carriers. Call us or email for a quote directly to your home or office. We are often able to obtain quality enclosed transportation (the kind of travel this car deserves) for the cost of open shipping.

- As a specialty car, parts and resources are readily available for this (and most every vehicle), thanks in large part to the Internet.

- In addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, California buyers will be subject to sales tax, documentation fee, DMV transfer fees and license/registration. Out-of-state buyers will be responsible for the purchase price of the vehicle and any local taxes/fees will be the purchaser's responsibility to pay in their respective state. IMPORTANT NOTE: If the vehicle is delivered or driven in California and driven on California roads, sales-tax, license registration and transfer fees will be assessed per California law.

- While we encourage telephone calls to discuss this vehicle in greater detail and will be glad to discuss the pricing over the telephone. Should you prefer that we call you to answer any questions about the vehicle; shipping alternatives, etc. please e-mail us with your telephone number and will gladly get back in touch with you.

- As with any collectible vehicle of this vintage we are unable to provide a warranty or guarantee of condition. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd.

- Please keep in mind that minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present on every vehicle (regardless of cost) including small chips, nicks, scratches, etc. that can be seen on even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, ownership of a collectible / specialty vehicle is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, collector / specialty car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!!

- The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, has been provided by the car's owner / owners or outside sources. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of "numbers" and significant data prior to the purchase of any collector vehicle that you are considering.

PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER
As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to:
- How long have they been in business?

- How much experience do they have with collector cars?

- How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)?

- How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle?

- Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance?

- Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction?

- What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license?

- Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances?

- Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation?

- Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
