description
Now jump ahead to 1977. There was this movie which was every bit as
touted as the Bond series, and featured box office stars Burt
Reynolds, Jerry Reed, Sally Fields, Jackie Gleason, and the newly
restyled 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. "Smokey and the Bandit".
Despite all the wit of Reynolds, the humor of Jerry Reed, the facial
expressions of Gleason, and the innocence of Ms. Fields, the Trans
Am truly was center stage. All of America not only knew about the
Trans Am, now they wanted one.
Once America discovered the
Trans Am, demand was so great in fact that production jumped
twenty-thousand units , for a grand total of 68,744. There was a lot
to like about the '77 T/A. It had a new look. It had a new engine.
It's soul was renewed. Pontiac built a winner.
Starting at
the front, a new "Batmobile" nose was introduced, combining the
bumper and header panel into a single unit, made of deformable
urethane. This allowed drivers to even be less careful as the worry
of cracking the fibreglass header panel was gone. Within the fascia
rested GM's latest styling innovation, square headlamps. These lamps
added a refreshingly modern look to the car. The headlamps were
surrounded by a one-piece grille/bezel assembly with a matte black
(except Special Editions which received gold) honey comb grille
texture and chrome edges.
condition
Exterior
The
Starlight Black exterior is in great driver condition. A
professional repaint was completed a few years ago with new GM
decals applied. As one can see in the photos, the paint has an
nice gloss, dazzling shine, and smooth finish. This Trans Am is
very solid with no visible signs of rust what so ever. Please
look closely at many photos of the underside of the car. This
trans am literality has the cleanest and nicest underside of any
original f-body we have had. It is totally solid with no signs
of rust or corrosion whatsoever and even the red primer is still
present. Please note that this is not a car that was
"paint-bombed" underneath to cover other issues. We have
included specific photos of the areas underneath and on the body
most prone to rust to show how clean this car is. Often
times Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up front ends;
this car does not. The 15x8 snow flake wheels were recently
purchased and look virtually brand new with no curb rash and a great shine and
finish. The center caps are the correct stainless steel caps
that are in excellent shape and the lug nuts are correct and in
excellent shape as well. There are no major imperfections that
have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be
some very small blemishes that were too small to faint to even
show up in photos and some small spots in the paint, most
notable on the roof, but nothing that is really noticeable from
about five feet away. The tires are literally brand new sized
255/60/15 with less than 500 miles on them. All weather
stripping and window sweeps are in newer condition. The trunk is
solid, complete, and nicely detailed with spare tire, jack and
accessories with original correct trunk mat.
This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core
support, which is pictured below. The core support
appears to show a date of "1 04 77" stamp, or January 1,
1977. This stamping would be correct and original as it
precedes the car's build date of the second week of
February, 1977 (02D). As one can imagine, if this Trans
Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision
this part would have been repaired or replaced. The
original stamping is great to see in tact.
The Trans Am looks just as good in person as it does in
the photos.
Interior
The red cloth deluxe interior of
this Trans Am looks absolutely marvelous. The seats are
in great condition with no excessive wear, stains, or seam
splits. Please note that these are the original Lombardy seat covers and not
some cheap incorrect aftermarket replacements. The carpet
is in good condition with no major stains. The carpet does
show a bit of wear in a few areas, but as one can see in the
photos it is not very noticeable at all and covered by the
floor mats. The original dash is in excellent condition with
no cracks, fading, or sun damage. The original am/fm radio
still remains in the factory position and the dash amazingly
remains uncut after all these years. A very nice modern Sony
stereo is mounted in the console map pocket with a
professional mounting kit and brand new JBL 6x9 rear
speakers are in the factory placement in the rear deck. All
interior lights and gauges work as they should with the
obvious exception of the clock. The original door panels
look great and both door pulls
are solid and in tact. The headliner appears to be original
as well and in very nice condition with no stains or rips.
The package tray also appears original and is in great
condition with no warping, fading, or sun damage. The
original console and shifter plate are both in excellent
condition as well and the console lid is solid and in tact.
This car has not been smoked in and there is no aroma of
cigarettes what so ever. These 1970's GM interiors are not
known to wear well over time and the amazing condition of
this original interior is a true testament to the excellent
and meticulous care this car has received throughout its
life.
The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the
photos.
Mechanical
This Trans Am is
in very good mechanical condition and it is ready to be enjoyed. The way this
Trans Am runs and drives is some of its strongest points. This
Trans Am is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road
and at highway speeds. The previous owner just had an alignment
performed in Jun of this year so the car tracks straight. There
are service records and receipts from his ownership included
with the car. There is no smoke when starting or
driving the car. It starts right away every time, idles well,
and runs excellent. The brakes are very responsive and do not
pull to one side or the other. The car still has a catalytic
converter in place. The horn works as do all the
interior and exterior lights, wipers, stereo, and gauges. The
speedometer, tachometer, odometer, oil pressure, fuel, and
battery gauges all work as they should. This Trans Am came from
the factory with Air Conditioning, but the previous owner
recently removed it and every piece that was removed comes with
the sale of the car and could easily be re installed. We were
told that the AC system was in tact and fully operational and
charged prior to removal. Also, none of the factory AC wiring was
removed or cut in any way during the removal and is taped up and
tucked away behind the distributor. Not enough can be said as to
how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially on a
beautiful day rowing through the gears.
Overall
Condition
Overall, this 1977 PHS Documented
Trans Am is in terrific original condition. It is a
great value and we have it priced to sell. Verifiable
originality is also extremely important in pricing on
these cars and as one can see this Pontiac is documented
and undoubtedly a correct mostly original TA. This car
turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes.
The value of these Black Trans Am's or "Bandit Cars" as
some call them, is currently skyrocketing. They are all
solid investments for a collector or the average
enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson and
Mecum stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this
vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the
purchase price with minimal effort.
Thank you for looking and please do not
hesitate to email or call with any questions.
