This fabulous Volvo convertible was originally delivered in Sweden with the best of both Europe and US equipment and features. It is the "Tourist and Diplomat" model. Compared with the regular US spec C70 it has more leather, a significantly more powerful engine, better handling suspension, more power seat adjustments on both front seats, front and rear fog lamps, windshield washers and wipers on the headlights, Wood trim on the steering wheel, etc. This is the top of the top version.

Always garaged. Never smoked in. It spent it's first summer in Europe and the remainder of its life in California. This car has been respectfully driven and dealer maintained with genuine Volvo parts since new. All common C70 issues have been permanently dealt with. The clutch, throttle body, AC compressor and motor mounts have all been replaced with improved units. Convertible top was replaced with a genuine Volvo top in 2009. Windshield was replaced in 2008. Tires are nearly new Yokahama Y rated S-Drives for great handling and a quiet ride. Wheels are straight and clean. One wheel was replaced after hitting a piece of debris in in the road. It's a perfect match. Original paint is in very good condition, with a few small blemishes here and there, for example scratches on the underside air dam.. Nothing serious. No rust, body damage or body work. Engine runs smoothly, pulls strong and uses no oil. Transmission shifts smoothly. The brakes are nearly new. AC blows cold. Everything works. Leather seats have some minor age checking but are still solid and very comfortable. No holes or tears. The factory upgraded surround sound system sounds awesome, and automatically adjusts settings when the top is down. Volvo didn't offer Bluetooth in 2000, but I'll include the after-market Bluetooth adapter I have been using for the last several years. It allows hands-free calling and you can play Pandora from your smart-phone through that fabulous stereo.

This is a super example of a great performance luxury convertible. Fun to drive, comfortable and great looking. There's even room for full size adults in the back seats. Look at the pictures.

I hate to see her go but we have another addition coming to the household and a 4 passenger car just won't cut it anymore.

Volvos will brake for bicyclists with new detection technology

Thu, 07 Mar 2013

Anyone who pedals a bicycle knows that one of the biggest dangers to riders is a motorized vehicle - Volvo estimates that nearly 50 percent of all cyclists killed in European traffic have collided with a car. In the United States alone, 618 riders lost their lives in bicycle/motor vehicle crashes in 2010, and the number of injuries surpassed 52,000.
To help drop those numbers, Volvo has just announced Cyclist Detection with full auto brake - a technology that detects and automatically applies a vehicle's brakes when a cyclist swerves in front of a moving car. The basic components of the system include a radar unit integrated into the front grille, a camera fitted in front of the interior rear-view mirror and a central control unit. The radar is tasked with seeing obstacles in front of the vehicle and calculating distance, while the camera is responsible to determine what the object is. The central control unit, with rapid processing capabilities, monitors and evaluates the situation.
The technology, which will be sold bundled with its Pedestrian Detection and called Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, will automatically apply full braking when both the radar and camera confirm a pedestrian or cyclist are in the immediate path of the vehicle. According to the automaker, the technology will be offered on the Volvo V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80 models from mid-May in 2013.

Leno drives Volvo P1800 from Roger Moore's The Saint

Thu, 18 Sep 2014

Outside of a few notable exceptions, Volvo usually isn't associated with making beautifully curvaceous vehicles. But in the 1960s and early '70s the company proved with the P1800 that its cars didn't only have to be safe but staid family transportation. Underneath that shapely styling were a lot of components from the brand's parts bin, but that didn't bother Roger Moore when he drove one of these in the TV series The Saint. Actually, the future James Bond actor didn't just get behind of one of these; he owned this exact 1967 P1800 S. It's this week's highlight on Jay Leno's Garage.
Moore was the car's original owner, but it also appeared in studio scenes of The Saint. Despite its famous provenance, when owner Bill Krzastek bought the P1800 in England, it was in pretty rough shape. The Volvo underwent a nine-month restoration to get it back into shape, which included some new body panels and wheels. Krzastek claims that much of the interior is original, though.
Krzastek comes off has a little bit nerdy, but you have to give him credit. He absolutely loves his Volvo and knows something about practically every detail of his car's history. Krzastek even refinanced his house to fund the purchase and restoration of the P1800. Although, with the right maintenance these old Swedes have been known to go millions of miles. Enjoy this look at one that was a star of the screen in the '60s.

Scratch that new crossover, Volvo teases ad campaign for XC60

Sun, 26 May 2013

If we were to paraphrase the opening lines of Kenneth Graeme's Wind in the Willows for our own purposes, we'd write, "Have you heard about Volvo? They never planned a new crossover at all. It was all a horrid low trick of theirs...." To be fair, though, we can't blame them for our own presumption. When the Swedish car company created a site called LeaveTheWorldBehind.com and teased a couple of videos for some kind of collaboration with Swedish House Mafia, we thought the crossover in one of the teasers pointed to a new vehicle on the way.
Turns out that's not the case. It really is 'just' a collaboration with the band on a music video for Swedish artist Lune's cover of their 2009 song, Leave the World Behind.
But there are Volvos in it, and you can watch it below and hear original song alongside. We've also included the press release with more details on why it all came together, and a behind-the-scenes video on the collabo. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, "That's all we have to say about that."
