1988 Volvo 240 Gl Sedan- Leather, New Ca Smog Certificate, Runs Well, Clean on 2040-cars

1988 Volvo 240 GL, great condition.  It just passed the California smog test with flying colors.  Very low emissions.  The new smog certificate is dated July 20, 2014.  Clean title.  It's ready to be registered to a new owner in California or anywhere else!

The car is in great overall condition.  The engine runs very consistently, and all the features work.  Crisp-shifting automatic transmission.  As discussed in the video, the car was in a fender-bender that damaged the grill and headlights, but it was fixed.  You can see the repair in the photos and videos.

The car has approximately 200,000 miles.  My grandmother bought it in 1988, and I shipped it from Massachusetts to California in 2004.  When I shipped the car, I pressed the "odometer reset" button, and with a *click* the odometer stopped working with 98,638 miles on it.  The speedometer still works fine, but the odometer is frozen at 98,638.  I estimate that the car now has 200,000 total miles.  The paint is good although there are dings and chips all around.  There is a large paint scratch on the hood- see the video.  There are no big areas of paint missing.  The leather is worn on the edge of the driver's seat, but it's intact.  The passenger's side leather and back seat are in good condition with much less wear.

The exhaust system has been almost entirely replaced.  The exhaust gaskets were replaced in 2004, and the muffler, resonator, and catalytic converter were replaced more recently.  The brakes have been overhauled.  When our son arrived in 2013, we replaced all the brake pads and the front rotors.  In the last 3 months we've replaced the master cylinder and the equalizer.  So the brakes are really strong.  The shocks and struts have not been replaced.  The tires are worn- they will need replacing soon, especially the rear tires.

All the electrical systems work.  There is a Jensen cassette deck that unfortunately eats tapes.  It does have an "iPod jack" to plug in your phone and play music through the stereo.  I also installed Blaupunkt speakers.  I know that the radio draws some current from the battery, even when the car is off.  If the car is not drive, it can drain the battery in around a week.  So when I park the car long-term, I remove fuse #8 which powers the radio and the power locks.  This is not absolutely necessary- it takes around a week for the battery to drain.  If you drive the car frequently, you can disregard this.  Otherwise you can (1) do what I did and remove fuse #8 for long-term parking situations, (2) disconnect the radio entirely, or (3) get a new radio.

The sunroof works well.  There is some plastic chipping on the front door storage bins.  Includes Volvo floor mats, extra windshield wipers, original manuals, and service manual.

Maintenance highlights (does not include oil changes or smog tests)

Volvo bringing Chinese-built cars to America beginning next year

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

Just because the penetration of the American automotive market by Chinese brands hasn't quite happened yet doesn't mean that Chinese-built cars are far off. According to a new report, we could very soon see long-wheelbase Volvo S60s that were assembled in the People's Republic arriving on US shores.
The report comes from Automotive News China, which cites an anonymous Volvo exec. An official Volvo spokesperson later corroborated ANC's report, although where the original source claimed that we could see the Chinese-built S60L in US dealers at some point in 2015, the company line was that a timeline hadn't been established to begin exports from the world's most populous nation.
According to Volvo, the benefit to exporting from China to the United States rather than from Sweden is the relationship between the US dollar and the Chinese yuan. Overall, it's a less tumultuous issue than the dollar-to-euro situation. By moving vehicles from China to the US, the Chinese-owned company is limiting the degree of risk it's taking with sudden currency swings.

Leno drives Volvo P1800 from Roger Moore's The Saint

Thu, 18 Sep 2014

Outside of a few notable exceptions, Volvo usually isn't associated with making beautifully curvaceous vehicles. But in the 1960s and early '70s the company proved with the P1800 that its cars didn't only have to be safe but staid family transportation. Underneath that shapely styling were a lot of components from the brand's parts bin, but that didn't bother Roger Moore when he drove one of these in the TV series The Saint. Actually, the future James Bond actor didn't just get behind of one of these; he owned this exact 1967 P1800 S. It's this week's highlight on Jay Leno's Garage.
Moore was the car's original owner, but it also appeared in studio scenes of The Saint. Despite its famous provenance, when owner Bill Krzastek bought the P1800 in England, it was in pretty rough shape. The Volvo underwent a nine-month restoration to get it back into shape, which included some new body panels and wheels. Krzastek claims that much of the interior is original, though.
Krzastek comes off has a little bit nerdy, but you have to give him credit. He absolutely loves his Volvo and knows something about practically every detail of his car's history. Krzastek even refinanced his house to fund the purchase and restoration of the P1800. Although, with the right maintenance these old Swedes have been known to go millions of miles. Enjoy this look at one that was a star of the screen in the '60s.

Volvo makes the XC60 disappear into art

Sun, 16 Jun 2013

For the last few years, Volvo has set up an art display in the Zurich, Switzerland central train station called the Volvo Art Session, allowing select artists - both established and up-and-coming - to create temporary exhibits with one of Volvo's products acting as the centerpiece. This year, six artists from across Europe converged in Zurich to turn a 2014 Volvo XC60 into a work of art.
Each started with a blank white canvas, creating a massive display in what Volvo says is one of the busiest covered public places in Europe, and after each was done, it was all erased for the next artists to come in and do his or her thing. While some made the XC60 a focal point in the art, others made the crossover seemingly disappear. We have a gallery of all six finished pieces, but if you want to see background of the artists or time-lapse videos of their works, head over to VolvoArtSessions.com. This site also shows the exhibits from the prior two years, and a press release can be found below.
