1974 Volkswagon Thing

Type 181

I originally bought this car in 1984. Used it on the weekends, evenings and even used it in a parade once.

It's always been stored inside. Very fun car to drive. I've always had Volkswagons and this was definatly the most fun to drive.

There arent a lot of these left so they really turn heads. They were only sold in the U.S. in 1973 and 74.

It has some rust, floor boards are rusted in the usual places as you can see in the picks. I removed

a home made front bumper that the previous owner had installed and bought an original VW

front bumper. As you can see in the picks it's not installed yet but it will go with the car.

The top is in decent shape, I replaced it 10 years ago or so and had the seats recovered. I have all of the

original windows and frames, the plastic has yellowed but the frames and material that holds the plastic are in great shape.

Doors are in great shape and all work well. It's not a car that I drive often but it always starts right up. Fresh gas and a battery,

she's never let me down. The tires don't hold air longer than a week or so and are crocking do to drying out. They're

probably 15 years old so if it's going to be a daily driver you will need new tires.

This is a no-reserve auction so someone will get a great deal. Feel free to call or email with any questions.

Bob @ 386-804-9919 or bobsoldit@yahoo.com .   $500 deposit due at end of auction via PayPal and

balance due in cash when picked up. No checks, money orders or bank drafts. Cash only! I'll help with loading if

you bring a trailer or can assist with loading if you hire a car shipping company but you must make the arrangements.

A few people have expressed an interest locally so I reserve the right to end the auction early. Odometer reads 46k,

I don't know if that's original or not. Good luck and Happy Bidding.

VW exec calls US ops a 'disaster'

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

Today in the Tell Us How You Really Feel file we have Bernd Osterloh, head of Volkswagen AG's Group Works Councils and member of the company's supervisory board, labeling the company's US operations "a disaster." Why? Because Osterloh believes VW of America doesn't have the models it needs to be competitive here, hasn't been decisive enough about its plans and German higher-ups still don't understand the US market.
In truth, the top labor rep at the German conglomerate is echoing sentiments we've heard from VWoA executives for years, and there's been the same commentary from dealers: Germany doesn't pay enough attention to what the US market really wants. Even ex-VWoA CEO Stefan Jacoby, who preceded the recently departed Jonathan Browning, said early in his tenure that one of his tasks was to get his German bosses to start delivering what the US market demanded. New CEO Michael Horn is saying much the same thing seven years later, telling Sky News that it has to increase "the speed at which we bring new models to the market and innovation to the market."
Osterloh wants to get "more models" here, including a pickup truck, but we'd wonder if the economics have changed from when Jacoby said they'd need to sell 100,000 per year to make money. Osterloh also wants a decision on where the CrossBlue will be built. Although it looked as if the Chatanooga, TN plant would get the call, the Puebla, Mexico plant is still in the running because of lower operating costs. No matter what happens right now, Osterloh thinks the situation won't get better for another two years when revamped models arrive, but at least the company can start taking the steps for a better US future.

BMW, Ferrari, VW cars use tungsten mined by terrorists

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Bloomberg Markets is reporting that BMW, Volkswagen and Ferrari have been using tungsten ore sourced from Columbia's FARC rebel terrorists. The extensive story focuses on Columbia's illegal mining trade and calls into question the provenance of the rare ore that is used not only in crankshaft parts production, but is also found in the world's computing and telecommunications industry for use in screens.
The ore is mined by the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army), and exported to Pennsylvania, where it is refined. The refined ore is then sent over to Austria, where a company called Plansee turns it into a finished product. Now, it's important to note that we aren't talking about the world's supply of tungsten here. In 2012, Plansee's American refinery purchased 93.2 metric tons of tungsten, valued at $1.8 million. That's peanuts, with the entire Colombian tungsten mining industry producing just one percent of the world's supplies.
That doesn't make indirectly supporting FARC any more acceptable, though. BMW, VW and Ferrari are all committed to not accepting mineral supplies from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is also in the grips of a guerrilla insurrection funded, in part, by illegal mining. The same commitment would figure to extend to Colombian mining, but as BMW points out, it's difficult for a multi-national manufacturer to know where every item in its supply chain comes from. A company spokesperson says as much, telling Bloomberg, "These few grams out of the billions of tons of raw materials passing through the BMW supply chain are of no practical relevance."

VW builds 250,000th Passat in Chattanooga in just two years

Sun, 26 May 2013

It hasn't been without incident or union organizing drive, but the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, TN has built its 250,000 Passat in just a little over two years. The Night Blue Passat TDI with black leather has come just two years and five weeks after the first customer car came off the line on April 18, 2011.
In the last year the plant operated at the 150,000-unit capacity that it was intended for, but the downturn in Passat sales and subsequent worker layoffs mean it will be a challenge to repeat the feat. The plant does have the world's largest solar park, though, and you can't take that away from them.
You'll find the official hand-clapping in the press release below.
