1984 Vw Rabbit 4 Door Automatic Propane Powered on 2040-cars

I am selling my beloved 1984 VW Rabbit that was converted to Propane power years ago. It started life as a Gasoline engine but the fuel tank, injectors and fuel distributor were removed to make way for the propane carburetor, regulator, heat exchanger, fuel tank, shut-off valve etc. to be installed. It has an Aluminum "fork lift" tank that lays in a cradle inside of a sheet metal box that was welded into the floor of the car where the back seat USED to be, it's gone now. The fuel system is pretty much what an old lift truck would have, all the parts are made by IMPCO. It runs well and the oil stays clean for a long time, due to the clean burning fuel. The car goes about 150 miles before I start to worry and get filled up. It will go further, but why risk it. Problem is, there is no fuel gauge to watch, you can only reset the trip odometer to keep track, reminds me of my old endure bike that I rode for years. It's an old car that still works, but it's not perfect and it was driven in the winter here in Upstate NY. To re-fuel, I would open the passenger side rear door, remove the tank box cover, dis-connect the fuel fitting, lift out the tank and have the guy at the station fill it on his scale. Then I would lift it up and lay it back in the box and cover it. The cover has strong latches to keep it tight. The fuel compartment is OPEN at the bottom (no floor, you can see the ground) to allow propane to "fall" out if a leak develops, as it is heavier than air. I modified this car as a tinker project that I happened to drive for quite a while. The interior is very Spartan, not much in there, no head liner, radio, padding, sound deadening etc. Bare bones! One thing I would do before I drove it again is replace the fuel hose that travels from the tank to the regular and the short one that connects the regulator to the shut-off valve. They are rubber with braid covering and only last for a certain amount of time before they start to crack. The hose I used was Aeroquip brand, if I remember correctly. Anyhow, it's due I'm sure. Not a big deal, just wanted to mention it. The car has rust and I tried to show it in the photos, it is 30 years old! I used silicone brake fluid to preserve the insides of the brake system as they usually rust out. Tires are snows with enough tread to use in the summer. All the doors, windows, latches etc. work.

Help a couple drive their 1984 Vanagon around the world

Mon, 22 Apr 2013

Meet Brad, Sheena and Nacho
Driving through China is a pricey proposition. The couple will need to pony up a staggering $19,514 just to cover the fees.
Brad and Sheena Van Orden are in the midst of a life-defining campaign to travel around the world, and they're doing it in a 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon custom built for the occasion. The past 15 months have seen the couple quit their jobs with Gore-Tex and drive from Arizona to the very southern tip of Argentina after spending a full two years saving and preparing for the trek. Now they're in southern Asia gearing up for the next leg of their journey.

2015 VW Golf R caught getting a flogging on 'Ring

Wed, 22 May 2013

The upcoming version of the Volkswagen Golf R is nearly ready for prime time, if this video of the car flying around the Nürburgring is any indication. The all-wheel-drive R seems to make quick, neat work of the corners we see here, and sounds pretty devilish in the process.
Expectations are that the new Golf R will run a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (what else?), tuned to produce even more than the current car's 256 horsepower. (Some sources have indicated outputs as high as 286 horsepower, with 280 pound-feet of torque. It's still not clear if Volkswagen will bring the six-speed dual-clutch transmission to the US-spec Golf R in this next go-round or if we'll stick to having only... eh... the stick.
In either case - watching the video below will only whet your appetite for the new, highest performing member of the Golf family.

VW exec calls US ops a 'disaster'

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

Today in the Tell Us How You Really Feel file we have Bernd Osterloh, head of Volkswagen AG's Group Works Councils and member of the company's supervisory board, labeling the company's US operations "a disaster." Why? Because Osterloh believes VW of America doesn't have the models it needs to be competitive here, hasn't been decisive enough about its plans and German higher-ups still don't understand the US market.
In truth, the top labor rep at the German conglomerate is echoing sentiments we've heard from VWoA executives for years, and there's been the same commentary from dealers: Germany doesn't pay enough attention to what the US market really wants. Even ex-VWoA CEO Stefan Jacoby, who preceded the recently departed Jonathan Browning, said early in his tenure that one of his tasks was to get his German bosses to start delivering what the US market demanded. New CEO Michael Horn is saying much the same thing seven years later, telling Sky News that it has to increase "the speed at which we bring new models to the market and innovation to the market."
Osterloh wants to get "more models" here, including a pickup truck, but we'd wonder if the economics have changed from when Jacoby said they'd need to sell 100,000 per year to make money. Osterloh also wants a decision on where the CrossBlue will be built. Although it looked as if the Chatanooga, TN plant would get the call, the Puebla, Mexico plant is still in the running because of lower operating costs. No matter what happens right now, Osterloh thinks the situation won't get better for another two years when revamped models arrive, but at least the company can start taking the steps for a better US future.
