Selling my 1981 Rabbit, Diesel LS, 2nd owner.
There are 85,295 miles on the odometer, but there are probably just over 86k. Odometer was working when purchased, but stopped working prior to registering vehicle. Mileage was no longer 100% accurate so I registered the car as mileage unknown. I took the odometer apart and found the broken gear, and replaced it, which fixed the odometer. I went through a few tanks of fuel before it was fixed, so my best guess is that it is approximately 1000 miles over what is displayed on the odometer. I have been daily driving this car for two and a half years, about 50 miles everyday. Car starts every time, even in the cold, has a newly rebuilt injector pump, new glowplugs, new diesel cutoff switch. 4 Speed manual transmission, shifts into all gears very smoothly.
Paint is original, and in great shape everywhere on the car except the driver's side fender where the paint it pitting. Small rust spot on driver's side A pillar, small amount of rust on the bottom inside of driver's and passenger side door, as well as on the bottom inside of the hatch.
Heat blows hot, but there is NO A/C, moving with the windows down worked fine for me, but sitting in traffic in July could get a little warm. Interior upholstery is all in great condition, no rips or tears on any of the seats. Headliner is sagging some, but the fabric itself is in good shape, just needs to be re-glued.
I've been averaging 48 miles per gallon around town, have gotten 50+ when driving a little more efficiently. Car will get up to 75 on the interstate. We have driven the car on several long trips and have been fine, twice to NW Florida, and once to Rochester NY. Averages about 40 mpg at speeds of 70+

World Car Of The Year down to its final four
Wed, 13 Mar 2013
Judges for the World Car of the Year Award have narrowed down the finalists to just four vehicles. Out of a total of 42 entries, only the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT-86 and Volkswagen Golf remain standing. For Volkswagen, this marks the second consecutive year the company has had an entry among the finalists, and the fourth time since 2009. In order to qualify, a vehicle must be on sale on two continents during the span of time between January 1, 2013 and May 30, 2013. A panel of 66 journalists from 23 countries then vote on the finalists.
Three vehicles have made the cut for the last round of voting on the 2013 World Performance Car as well, with the Cayman/Boxster and FR-S/BRZ/GT-86 running against the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Meanwhile, the Renault Zoe, Tesla Model S and Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid are duking it out for the World Green Car Award. Finally, the World Car Design of the Year Award is up for grabs between the Aston Martin Vanquish, Jaguar F-Type, and the Mazda6. Check out the full press release below. Overall winners will be presented at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible gets the R-Line treatment
Thu, 07 Feb 2013Volkswagen just launched the topless Beetle Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, but we're already seeing the next step forward in the topless Bug range with this, the R-Line. We'll admit, this treatment falls under the "all show and no go" category, but it's still a pretty potent little cutie.
The R-Line starts with a standard Beetle Turbo Convertible but adds unique 19-inch aluminum wheels on lower-profile tires, LED daytime running lamps and Xenon headlamps. Naturally, there are R-Line badges aplenty both on the interior and exterior, and we must say, the whole package looks pretty darn snazzy.
Pricing has yet to be announced, but when it goes on sale later this year, the hotter convertible will join Volkswagen's growing R-Line portfolio that now includes the CC, Beetle hatch, Tiguan and Touareg.
VW Golf GTI wrung out by Chris Harris
Thu, 27 Jun 2013Enthusiasts like nothing more than to crucify modern interpretations of their favorite performance models for failing to live up to some imagined ethos. Even the Volkswagen GTI has suffered its fair share of slings and arrows for growing in size and curb weight. Chris Harris recently spent some time with the all-new MK VII GTI to find out if growing up means giving up on what makes the machine so special.
Judging by his comments, Harris certainly doesn't think so. Yes, the new GTI is considerably more comfortable than its predecessors, but that's hardly a bad thing. The multitude of driving modes actually seem to add depth to the car rather than simply try to force one tool to do many jobs, and Harris even finds the machine's electronic power steering tolerable. As a result, Harris goes so far as to call the Volkswagen GTI "one of the best cars to actually own." How's that for high praise? You can watch the video for yourself by scrolling below.
