1981 VW Rabbit Pickup / Caddy
--NO RESERVE --  HIGH BID WINS--

Hello! thanks for looking at my auction. This little truck belongs to my neighbor, and good friend of almost 10 years. He bought the truck with intentions of "fixing it up" and using it to commute with. Being that he works out of town, and is only home 3-5 days a month; he's come to the conclusion he won't get around to working on it any time soon.

Hopefully you understand that this truck is over 30 years old. Although the truck will be represented exactly as it sits, please be reasonable in your expectations. The truck is less than 500 yards from my home, and I can check on anything you would like me to. I can get a hold of  the owner anytime, and will be happy to assist in having your questions answered in a timely manner. You can also call me with your questions if you would rather not email. I encourage you to ask any questions that would help you make an educated decision about buying this truck. It is sold in as-is, where is condition. No warranty or guarantee expressed or implied.

  • 1981 volkswagen truck / caddy
  • 1.6L diesel
  • 4 speed manual transmission
  • fiberglass camper shell
  • clean utah title.
  • really clean body, only real rust spot is shown in a close up picture
  • "strut" towers look great
  • does not appear to have been in an accident, ever.
  • bed is super nice, dark areas in pic are leaves not rust.
  • new battery
  • clutch seem strong
  • brakes work
  • starts great
  • new battery
  • has plug-in electric block heater
  • true mileage is unknown. I had to enter a value for the listing template. Mileage is not 100,000. I dont know if odometer is accurate. due to age, title reflects "0" miles
  • tires hold air fine, however need replaced
  • Original owners manual in glovebox
Truck starts and drives around just fine. I guess you could simply put new tires on it and use as is. Major systems seem to all work properly. Has been driven around town as recently as last week.

Exterior seems to be original paint and still retains original decals/graphics.

Interior is worn, see pics for best evaluation. there are interior pieces missing, i.e. arm rest, misc knobs, etc. The camper top is a really great fit. looks nice. there is one dent in front right fender. Electric cooling fan is operated by a toggle switch.

All in all, a great little truck for someone to tinker with. Not being into VW's, I was intrigued that there is quite a following for these trucks.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, ASK ASK ASK! I don't know the ins&outs of these vehicles. If there are common flaws or areas that need to be addressed to help you make a decision or would be beneficial to the buying public, please let me know! I believe in full disclosure! I have been selling on ebay since 1999, and intend to sell this truck while maintaining my great feedback rating.

Truck is located in Washington, Utah. about an hour and a half north of las vegas or about 3.5 hours south of Salt lake city. I will be happy to help with shipping arrangements, at YOUR expense. I would even consider delivering to las vegas for a small fee.

$300 non-refundable deposit is due within 24 hours of your winning bid. balance due at time of pick up, or prior to shipping.

thanks! Pete 435-668-9669

On Feb-11-13 at 07:07:02 PST, seller added the following information:

*Someone has asked if I would assist in obtaining a temporary tag for vehicle transport. I would be happy to take care of that. Our DMV charges around $25 for a 3day permit. The cost would be the buyers responsibility. I would recommend a thorough inspection of the truck, along with other routine maintenance (oil change, etc) before I would attempt to transport this vehicle any significant distance. -Pete

*Additional information:  the following information should be considered by prospective buyers:

  • Odometer reads 145,000 miles
  • Vehicle appears to have been treated with "undercoating" when new. The underside looks really good, no rust that I could see.
  • It is my understanding that it is a 5 speed transmission, not a 4 as listed above.

VW going turbo-only in 3 to 4 years

Wed, 18 Sep 2013

This really was a matter of when, rather than if. Volkswagen will apparently be the first manufacturer to phase out naturally aspirated engines in favor of turbocharging its full slate. VW is kind of responsible for ushering in this push towards small-displacement, turbocharged engines that's taken the industry by storm. When it dropped its direct-injection, 2.0-liter turbo in the 2005 GTI it demonstrated that strapping an iron long to an engine can enhance the powertrain as a whole. VW made fuel economy gains, while also giving a linear, non-laggy turbo experience that it has replicated, model-after-model, to this day.
Speaking with The Detroit News, Volkswagen's executive Vice President of Group Quality, Marc Trahan, told the paper that, "We only have one normally aspirated gas engine, and when we go to the next generation vehicle that it's in, it will be replaced. So three, four years maximum."
Really, it's hard to get teary-eyed about either of these engines going away. VW has access to smaller powerplants that could easily match the performance of the 2.5 five-cylinder and the 3.6 V6, while gobbling up less fuel and providing a better driving experience. What we are sad about is that a similar statement about the extinction of NA engines came from the Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Ford, Joe Bakaj. We'd certainly get teary-eyed over a world without Ford's excellent 5.0-liter V8.

Brazil contemplates safety exemption for VW Kombi as it goes out of production today [w/poll]

Tue, 31 Dec 2013

Brazil: the country of carnivals, indescribable beauty adjacent to abject poverty, Ayrton Senna and old Volkswagen models. Only they're not old - they're new, they're just based on old designs. The original Beetle continued production there long after it had been phased out elsewhere, but the original Kombi van has lasted much longer. That ends today, however, with the iconic VW Microbus ambling out of production on the last day of 2013.
VW kept making the van in Brazil with the original air-cooled 1.2-liter boxer four until 2005, after which the original design was updated with a 1.4-liter water-cooled engine. Today, however, it ultimately falls prey to safety regulations that mandate that all vehicles - no matter how old their design - need to have airbags and ABS, forcing Volkswagen do Brasil to cease production of the Microbus after a 56-year production run. But the latest word is that the Kombi (as it's presently known) could get a stay of execution - or at least a resurrection in short order.
According to reports, the Brazilian government is looking into granting the Type 2 Microbus an exemption from said safety regulations, reasoning that the van was designed long before the advent of airbags and ABS. If the measure goes through, the Kombi Last Edition (pictured above) could prove not to be the last at all. So what do you think, should the Microbus get an exemption from Brazilian safety regulations for nostalgia's sake? Vote in our poll below, then have your say in Comments.

Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show

Mon, 05 Mar 2012

The Volkswagen Group is comprised of 11 brands producing 240 vehicles across 49 factories throughout the world. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.
To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. We'll be delving into the details of each over the next two days of show coverage, but before that happens, you can read all about what we saw tonight from the cheap seats after the break.
