*Only notable car history in Carfax (feel free to contact me for a copy) is that it was involved in "Lemon Law Buy" back when still relatively new in Aug 2006 when it still had only 15,767 miles - obviously it has been driven approx 114K miles since then so that shouldn't be of much concern.

2004 VW Phaeton, AWD Bentley Engine Hand built in Germany in the "Glass Factory".  I will let you do your own research on this wonderful motorcar, those whom know, know.

If you're reading this, you're among them. This is a no reserve auction, I just bought it, at auction, but won a Bentley Flying Spur today as well, my indulgence - is your gain!

There is another on E-bay for $18,999 right now -  you KNOW to make this car just as nice won't require THAT cost infusion.

These are very rare and this is not to be missed.  This car is understated but gets admiring glances and thumbs up from those in the know.

If you're reading this ad, then you know what this car is all about, I don't need to tell you that it's based on the Bentley Flying Spur Platform (the Volkswagen Group D1 platform, is shared with the Bentley Continental GT and Bentley Continental Flying Spur.) Certain systems, such as the automatic transmission and some engines, are also shared with the Audi A8. The D1 is a stand-alone steel platform specifically developed for the Phaeton and Bentley Continental and not to be confused with Audi's all-aluminium D3 platform. Compared to the Audi A8L 4.2 FSI quattro, the Phaeton is 545 pounds heavier but is still competitive with the lighter A8 in most driving tests, due to the Phaeton's increased engine power (335 hp versus 330) and a shorter axle ratio (3.65:1 versus 3.32)Leather Interior with front and rear heated/cooled seats, Air Suspension, Navigation, Power Sunroof, 20Alloys, CD Changer, Tiptronic, Climate Control, Tilt, Cruise, ABS, real mahogany wood trim, Xenon, Fully Loaded!

Local California Car

To heap kudos on the Phaeton's air conditioning may seem like damning it with faint praise, but that's not at all what I'm trying to do. Four-Zone Climatronic, as the system is called, is a true luxury-car breakthrough, and one of the last real innovations possible in the upper-echelon car market, where even entry-level models pack more features and more luxury goodies than even the Rolls-Royces of ten years ago. The Phaeton, a late entry in what is already a crowded market, had to do something really special on top of the requisite leather, wood, satellite navigation, eight airbags, double-glazed side glass, power moonroof, heated and cooled massaging seats, and long-wheelbase comfort. Climatronic is it, giving the Phaeton one real gee-whiz factor to wow your peers with. They'll wish they had air vents that disappeared, too (oh, and, cupholders with lids that power up when you take your cups out and touch a button).

These cars are beautiful - I've personally owned four since they came out, and the W12 is exponentially the ONLY one you want.

Some of the neat things I learned: the Phaeton has a self charging mini halogen flashlight in place of a cigarette lighter; the automatic trunk not only opened and closed at the touch of a button but the lock latch actually folded up into its own space as the trunk reached its zenith, so you wouldn't bang your head into the latch; speaking of the trunk. . .WOW, the Phaeton has a trunk to beat all trunks. . .Tony Soprano and the boys could fill it with three large bodies and still have room left over for shovels, plastic wrap, and some warm merchandise that happened to "fall offa da truck"; the back seat was so large and well appointed that even an NBA center would feel comfortable and pampered back there. . .plus the seat's adjustments rivaled a Sharper Image recliner; speaking of recliners and Sharper Image, all the seats on the car I drove had A/C vents, lumbar supports and a built-in massager. . .you just never want to leave the Phaeton. . .I was hoping for a back scratcher control and a WC but never found them.

Ok back to the most asked questions:

What is it?

It is a heck of a car that rivals any on the road. . .a beautiful venue that provides a more than comfortable ride, a car that at the touch of a button can be made more relevant for any driving condition: 4 Motion AWD, Electronic Damping Controls; Auto-leveling Air Suspension; Electronic Stabilization Program including ABS/ASR/EDL with brake assist. . .plus Engine Braking Controls; Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Servetronic Power Steering. The Phaeton has Air Bags Everywhere, Tire Pressure Monitor; Rain Sensors and Heated Windshield Washer Nozzles; Sun Shades on the windows and on and on and on and on and on and on. . .you can see the details below.

A $75,000 VW?

And well worth it . . .its German ride and handling is the equal to cars costing twice as much as it does. and the fit and finish are spectacular. . .with blond Sonnen Beige leather and Chestnut Wood Trim in all the right places the Phaeton was right at home in my family's estate carriage house (oh yeah. VW says it looses 15% of its owners to luxury brands each year so it needed a step up for VW fans

Can I sit in it?

No sir, no sitting. . .only looking. . .you car selling peasants . . ."It's good to be king"

How much horsepower? Is it enough

The Phaeton's 4.2 liter 40 valve engine is rated at 335 horsepower. . .with fuel consumption estimated to be 15 in the city and 22 on the highway. . .does is it have enough horsepower?...I must confess that I think the Phaeton at 335 horsepower was underpowered. . .and I guess VW agrees with me as they are making a W12 version of the car available in 2005, I can't wait to get my hands on that baby. . .another tidbit of information that I furrowed out, is that the Phaeton's first cousin the Audi A8 has basically the same specs, but its 4.2 liter 40 valve engine is rated at 330 HP and is built in Germany while the Phaeton's engine is built in Hungry. . .who says you only get the same old same old in our reviews?

The Phaeton even caused a chat room stir among VW aficionados here in Louisville with their online chatter focused on the fact that my Lune Blue car was spotted driving around town. . .I guess it's the first one to visit the Bluegrass. . .and even with a $75,000 MSRP I am sure it won't be the last.

Anti-UAW VW workers move to form own union

Sat, 30 Aug 2014

The struggle over unionization at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, TN, continues to get more complicated. There's now a second union fighting to organize at the plant; although this one is staunchly against the actions of the United Auto Workers. At the same time, the UAW is still signing up voluntary members to its recently created Local 42 at the facility and is reportedly near having a majority of the hourly employees on its side.
The new, anti-UAW union campaign is being spearheaded by employee Mike Burton, according to Reuters, and he calls his group the American Council of Employees. He claims to already have 108 signatures in support of his organization. Burton believes that the UAW is harmful to businesses, and his goal is to force another vote to determine a preferred union among workers.
The UAW was initially defeated (712 to 626) when it attempted a union vote at the Tennessee plant in February. However, UAW secretary-treasurer Gary Casteel told Reuters that Local 42 has already signed up over 700 members. If it can reach a majority of the roughly 1,500 employees, the group hopes VW might consider recognizing it as the factory's union.

VW Beetle R is one mean bug

Wed, 02 Oct 2013

Volkswagen's R lineup currently consists of the Golf R in North America, and the too-cool-for-school Scirocco R in Europe. It hasn't exactly been a secret as to which VW would next get the R treatment; the German manufacturer reportedly confirmed that a hotter Beetle would be coming to the US. That announcement, in August 2011, was followed up by a production-ready Beetle R Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
After some wait, we're finally seeing spy shots of the Beetle R in Germany. The mule shown in the images here is wearing the R-Line bodykit, which adds sportier front and rear fascias, side skirts, dual exhausts and a not-so-subtle spoiler. Topped off with Volkswagen's traditional, five-spoke R wheels, we'd be just fine with the Beetle R coming to market as is.
Our spy photographer, though, seems to think that the production R will get even sportier sheetmetal, which we take to mean the more assertive look shown on the Frankfurt show car. Larger intakes on the front fascia, a bigger rear spoiler and vertical vents on the rear bumper could all be upcoming. Whether a production model will include the concept's polished wheels (R cars haven't traditionally embraced that look), vented hood and the quad-tipped exhausts remains to be seen.

Volkswagen's De Silva says next Scirocco will be 'completely different'

Tue, 02 Apr 2013

From our perspective, the reborn Volkswagen Scirocco is a handsome (if squat) little thing. Yet design-wise, it's always struck us as uncomfortably close to the Golf three-door hatchback with which it shares its basic underpinnings. That aesthetic kinship may be part of the reason why Volkswagen has steadfastly refused to import the Scirocco to North America, seeing as how the Golf doesn't regularly set the company's sales charts alight, and it's less expensive.
But that visual similarity might be about to change, says Walter De Silva, who recently told Australia's Car Advice that, "It must be completely different... we don't want to repeat the bodystyle of the Scirocco, we want to change that." Further, the Volkswagen Group's design boss says that the next-generation car isn't terribly far along in development yet - "at the moment, it's only a studio [project]... it's not defined." It's probably just as well, as the new seventh-generation Golf arguably borrows some of its design from the current Scirocco anyway.
So we should expect a much bolder, more differentiated design, right? Well, yes, no and maybe. Back in September, De Silva himself was quoted as saying that the era of flamboyant styling has passed, and that future VW designs will be simpler to better reflect the times and preserve resale value. So... how different could it be?
