Very rare VW-- 4-Motion AWD (basically Audi's Quattro) with turbocharged 1.8 4-cylinder coupled to a 5 speed manual transmission. Very responsive (unlike the 1.8 with automatic); it really can move out. Gas mileage is very good, and you won't have to worry about your ZF 5-speed auto going out to the tune of $5-8,000.

The Passat underpinnings are a mix of Audi A6 and A4 and the car has a real quality feel. Absolutely no squeaks, rattles or leaks, ultra smooth ride with precision handling. Far more solid  than my previous Subaru Outback (the one that blew it's head gaskets and $2500 of my cash.) Just a delightful car, full of character, but polished.

I'm the second owner and bought it about 6 months ago. I intended to keep it for awhile, so I did the following: new timing belt, coolant, thermostat, hoses ,serpentine belt, motor mounts. None were a problem--just preventative maintenance. The headlight adjusters were broken so I replaced the headlight assemblies. New Continental tires, 215/60-15. Highly rated (Tire Rack) for snow. Extremely smooth and quiet. New front brakes and rotors. And new Hitachi ignition coils, as the standard units in previous years were problematic. Clutch, AC, gearbox, power equipment, all are great. Shocks like new, no balljoint or tir-rod problems, and absolutely no rust. Nada. It really does drive like a new machine.

So, you say, why you selling it? My 67 year old knee went out.

Bad: I just broke the left tail-light, not in pictures. Small dent in left front fender lip, dent in lower left bottom edge of rear hatch. I think that happened when the hatch was up. Slight wrinkle in paint just below that on horizontal part of bumper--VW has an aftermarket piece that would cover that. I'll replace the lens if I get a decent deal, otherwise it's $200 for a new one. Alloy wheels look OK but not great. They're painted, so repair (if you care) is straight-forward. The side carpet in back has a few marks. Full sized spare by the way, and unused.

That's my pitch. Always glad to talk or send more pix. Car is located on Vashon Island, WA. About 6 miles from Sea-Tac Airport.

Volkswagen Passat gets Wolfsburg Edition, priced from $23,495*

Tue, 23 Apr 2013

Volkswagen has just announced a new Passat Wolfsburg Edition, which slots between the base S and mid-grade SE trims in terms of content and price. The automaker has not released any official photos of the car as of this writing (aside from the badge shot you see here, of course), but the Wolfsburg Passat will be visually set apart from the rest by a unique set of 16-inch alloy wheels.
The big host of upgrades for the Wolfsburg Edition are found inside, where buyers will enjoy standard amenities like leatherette seats (with bun-warmers on the front chairs), a power driver's seat, satellite radio and a media interface with iPod connectivity. Of course, this comes on top of the already standard Passat features like Bluetooth and auto on/off headlamps. The Wolfsburg Passat will only be available with the 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.
Look for the 2013 Wolfsburg Edition Passat to hit dealerships in the very near future, priced from $23,495, *not including $795 for destination. Have a look below for Volkswagen's official press blast.

VW announces recall of 26,000 2014 models with 1.8T engines

Tue, 22 Apr 2014

Volkswagen has followed up on a stop-sale order from earlier this month, announcing a voluntarily recall of 26,400 vehicles that are powered by the brand's 1.8-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The new mill replaced the despised 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the Jetta, Passat, Beetle and Beetle Convertible last year. Weirdly, though, of the 26,452 units covered in the recall, only 1,655 are customer vehicles.
According to VW, the affected models were built between February 1 and April 6 of this year, and feature bad O-ring seals in the transmission oil cooler. Apparently, the faulty O-rings could cause a fluid leak, as they won't seal between the oil cooler and transmission. VW is blaming a material change from a supplier for the problem.
There have been no fires, injuries, accidents or fatalities relating to this issue, which VW will be fixing free of charge. Customers will need to report to dealers to have the O-rings replaced.

Tanner Foust checks out his new VW Beetle GRC rally car

Thu, 11 Sep 2014

Racing driver and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is a very busy guy. After all, he's competing in rounds of both Global Rallycross series and FIA World Rallycross Championship, not to mention his TV duties. However, we probably shouldn't feel too sorry for him, because his job puts him behind the wheel of some truly crazy machinery.
Case in point is his latest ride in Global Rallycross - the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The German company claims that this all-wheel drive Bug makes around 540 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and can shoot to 60 in under 2 seconds. Plus, if this video is any indication, this Volkswagen sounds like a machine gun when throwing revs at idle, and it can do some wonderfully easy four-wheel drifts.
Previously, Foust was driving a VW Polo for Andretti Autosport in GRC, but the team unveiled the look of the Beetle GRC at the Chicago Auto Show. Now, Foust is finally getting to show off his new office to the public, and like VW's tagline for the new car claims, it's way hotter than Herbie.
