VW 1960 Karmann Ghia convertible. Great looking vintage Karmann Ghia from California finished in a light mint green exterior with matching interior and like new convertible top and matching boot cover. New Coker Classic white sidewall tires, new exhaust system with stainless steel tailpipes. Recent rebuilt front suspension with new king pin set and link pin set. It's had a recent tune up, oil change and had the brake fluid changed and brakes adjusted. The original 36HP engine has been replaced with a newer 1600 dual port VW engine and runs excellent. The previous owner converted the original 6 volt battery to a 12 volt system but has some additional services needed to finish the conversion as the horn, windshield wipers and original radio are not working. The previous owner installed an MP3 hook-up with speakers in the rear and plug-in contained inside the glove box. The speakers are sitting in the rear and easily removed as they are not affixed to the interior. The headlights, tail lights, and brakes lights are working, but the 2 back-up lights attached to the rear bumper are disconnected. The heater is disconnected. The original chrome door handles and interior trim is in very good original condition and retains its original ivory colored knobs, buttons, etc. Original bumpers are in good original driver quality condition with no major issues. The passenger door window as some gap between the window and the weatherstripping. Whenever we drove the Ghia, we got lots of "thumbs up" and admiring looks. The original Hazet Tool kit attached to the spare tire is NOT included in this auction. If you have any questions or further pictures please contact us. I had the car shipped from California and can recommend an excellent shipper to the winner of the auction. We will not arrange shipping for this car, but will assist the buyer in making it an easy transaction. The 14 photos show the car well. Be sure to use the enlarge and zoom features.

VW recalls 1.1M Jetta, Beetle models in US, China over suspension fears

Fri, 17 Oct 2014

Volkswagen is recalling about 1.1 million vehicles in China and North America in a newly announced campaign affecting the rear suspensions on some models. For the US, the action covers about 442,265 vehicles, including 400,602 examples of its 2011-2013 Jetta and 41,663 units of the 2012-2013 Beetle and Beetle Convertible. According to Reuters, the recall affects a further 126,000 vehicles in Canada and about 581,090 in China, including related market-specific models like the Sagitar.
The problem can occur if the affected models have a collision to the rear or the side-rear of the vehicle. It's then possible for the trailing arms on the torsion-beam rear suspension to be damaged. If the harm isn't noticed, then the part could fracture while driving. Obviously, a broken rear suspension is going to have an adverse effect on handling.
To fix things, VW dealers will inspect the trailing arms on the models, and they will all receive a sheetmetal part that will make a distinctive sound if broken in the future. If already damaged, the entire torsion beam will be replaced. Obviously, this work will be done at no charge to owners.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.
