This 1971 Karmann Ghia is exceptional, the perfect car for restoration. Never been crashed, vertually rust free with exception to surface rust on roof, back deck and hood. small spots on right quarter pannel,.. Fender wells, floor pan, under seats, along rocker pannels, any where you look, is rust free. The engine is original, 1600 cc AS-41 case ( spring steel head studs ) has 90 -100 lbs compression in all cyls. It does not leak oil and runs quiet and strong.
The transmission is 4 speed, all shift linkage, gears, syncros and berrings are good. CV axels and boots are good. The front axel beam is straight, rust free, sterring box, tie rod ends are good. It does however need ball joints, ( boots are torn and they show wear ). All body panels are straight, I cant find any bondo in it. The front and rear bumpers are original and have no dings in them. Body chrome strips are excellent, ( one missing on drivers door). The dent in left head light area did not damge the headlight bucket.,has chrome trim ring not damaged. Electrical wiring is all good. head light switch, emergency switch were removed to install the dash cover, they are still wired and can be reinstalled easily.. as all parts are there under hood. Door handles, latches, locks, window regulators are in excellent shape.
The original carpets show very little wear, I am convinced that the miles (61 509 ) are original miles, as this car does not show the normal wear that one does with miles over the odometer limits of 100, 000. (such as shift linkage. etc.) I was a VW factory trained mechanic and had my own repair shop called Steve's Folkswagen in Colorado Springs CO. for 25yrs. I restored and rebuilt many VWs. I contacted the Colorado Dept of motor vehicles and they do not keep records that far back, Car fax does not go back past 1981, so I am researching other ways to document the miles. Colorado required an emissions test ( of which I have a copy ) confirming that miles at time of last registration 8/15/2005 shows 60,K some miles The previous owner states she only drove it about 1,500 miles since purchased in 2005 in Colorado and thought the miles were actual. The vehicle itself is the best evidence, as the closer you look the more one is convinced the miles are original. The speedo and odometer work perfectly Another fact, (stated on Car fax web site) is that when a speedometer rolls over the 100,00 limits, the first number in the row on left will not line up perfectly with the other numbers. odometer numbers line up perfectly. Volkswagen reveals Beetle GSR, R-Line convertible and two special GTIs
Thu, 07 Feb 2013Volkswagen has chosen to really expand its performance-tuned portfolio at this year's Chicago Auto Show, bringing along a couple of new Beetles destined for model year 2014, as well as a pair of freshened GTI packages that you'll be able to buy almost right away.
The first, and splashiest of the Chicago goodies on the VW stand has got to be the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR. Don't lose your temper, Acura Integra geeks; in this case, GSR stands for "Gelb Schwarzer Renner" or "Yellow Black Racer," and harkens back to a sport-tuned classic Beetle from the 1970s. For the 2014 iteration, the GSR gets a 210-horsepower version of VW's 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. That engine is enough to push the Beetle to 60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds, and up to a top speed of 130 mph.
Of course, you'll have long-since noticed the shockingly yellow-and-black livery before you stumble across the Turbo badge on the rear deck. The GSR gets 19-inch alloy wheels, 235-section tires and a tea-tray rear spoiler, but it's the paint and graphics package that will decide if this is your (lemony) cup of tea. Things don't get any subtler inside the car, either, as VW has carried the colorway through to the interior, as well. Only 3,500 Beetle GSRs will be produced, with just more than half of those going to the US - call your dealer today, Wiz Khalifa.
Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia
Tue, 20 Aug 2013Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.
Volkswagen Multivan Alltrack Concept takes the luxury van life off road
Wed, 05 Mar 2014Volkswagen dug into its commercial vehicle fleet for its latest Geneva Motor Show concept, blending the versatile body of the T5 MultiVan with a luxuriously appointed interior, 4Motion all-wheel drive and a thrifty diesel powertrain.
That 177-horsepower diesel engine routes its power to the AWD system through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Based on that alone, we'd expect the Multivan Alltrack's behind-the-wheel experience to be somewhat familiar. That all-wheel-drive system and van body contribute to the 21-degree approach and 15-degree departure angles of this soft-roading MultiVan.
What wouldn't be familiar is its exquisite cabin. Volkswagen opted for a nautical theme for the concept's interior, featuring grey-blue leather seats from Poltrona Frau and a floor finished in real wood. The dark wood trim can also be found throughout the interior, running below the windows and on the dash.
