Rockville, Maryland, United States

For Sale:
Much desired and increasingly rare 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. This year of Karmann Ghia featured the last year of the small tail-lights, Independent Rear Suspension (IRS), and front disc brakes. The original 1500cc motor was removed and replaced with a sporty 1776cc Dual carb beast, paired with a new transmission, interior, and comprehensive rust removal . The car is a sleek sleeper, which can hit 80+ MPH with ease.

Originally imported from Germany to Hawaii,  this KG made it's way to California, Wisconsin and finally the east coast.
The car was originally Manilla Yellow, then painted green, and finally repainted chrome blue sometime in 2003.

I have owned the car since 2012.

During my ownership I began a restoration that included:

Removing all cancerous rust and patching up the floorboards. There is some superficial rust bubbling on some of the rockers, the air vents, and hood, rain sills. I have taken pictures of all known rust issues. But rest assured there are no surprises or rot whatsoever. Car has been garaged indoors, and rarely driven in the winter.
Newly rebuilt 1776cc Engine.
Newly rebuilt Transmission
New Sewfine Red Interior including dash pads, seats, headliner, door cards, door handles etc. (just needs some minor trim pieces)
New Firestone R165 Tires
New Disc Brakes
New Exhaust
New Gas Line
New Battery
New Wiring
and Many More

Mechanics:
Car is a daily driver. It is reliable and everything works properly with 3 exceptions:
1. Hood and Engine Release need to be sorted. If you yank on them they open, but this is not how it should properly function.
2. There is a short in one of the relays that has knocked out the horn/turn signals/odometer lighting. Brake-lights/Reverse Lights/Headlights/starter/ and radio  (when installed) all function regardless of the short.
3. Fuel Gauge and Odometer work. Clock does not.

Body:
- Body is straight, (98% rust free), Nose is clean. and there is no evidence of any accident. There are about 133K miles on the frame.
- original Hella headlights and Taillights
- original chrome bumpers, and reverse lights, Not cheap aftermarket accessories!
-There is a dent on the driver side door, and the striker plate needs to be replaced for the door to close properly
-Some superficial rust on the engine lid vents, door sills, and rain sills,
-Evidence of previous bondo work on the doors and rear.
-Paint is a 5- footer. I have provided pictures of trouble areas to be as accurate as possible

Interior:
New door cards, seats ,headliner, and dash pad. Minor trim missing here and there.

Summary:
All in all this car is a great daily driver. Mechanically it is all new, and needs just a little TLC to be complete. This is a great car to work on here an there on the weekends and still be able to drive.
Pictures will show trouble spots.
$ 500  deposit  in full within 48 hours of auction close.
Buyer is 100% responsible for shipping. Car must be picked up and paid for within 1 week of auction close.
I cannot help with shipping, and I ask for US bidders only, if you are international and wish to bid, please contact me first to make sure that there is a third party here that can facilitate the transaction on your behalf.

BMW, Ferrari, VW cars use tungsten mined by terrorists

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Bloomberg Markets is reporting that BMW, Volkswagen and Ferrari have been using tungsten ore sourced from Columbia's FARC rebel terrorists. The extensive story focuses on Columbia's illegal mining trade and calls into question the provenance of the rare ore that is used not only in crankshaft parts production, but is also found in the world's computing and telecommunications industry for use in screens.
The ore is mined by the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army), and exported to Pennsylvania, where it is refined. The refined ore is then sent over to Austria, where a company called Plansee turns it into a finished product. Now, it's important to note that we aren't talking about the world's supply of tungsten here. In 2012, Plansee's American refinery purchased 93.2 metric tons of tungsten, valued at $1.8 million. That's peanuts, with the entire Colombian tungsten mining industry producing just one percent of the world's supplies.
That doesn't make indirectly supporting FARC any more acceptable, though. BMW, VW and Ferrari are all committed to not accepting mineral supplies from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is also in the grips of a guerrilla insurrection funded, in part, by illegal mining. The same commitment would figure to extend to Colombian mining, but as BMW points out, it's difficult for a multi-national manufacturer to know where every item in its supply chain comes from. A company spokesperson says as much, telling Bloomberg, "These few grams out of the billions of tons of raw materials passing through the BMW supply chain are of no practical relevance."

UAW angered over VW workers getting right to defend anti-union vote

Thu, 13 Mar 2014

The United Auto Workers have called a decision by the National Labor Relations Board allowing anti-UAW employees at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga the right to defend voting down unionization at the plant "an outrage."
You'll recall that the union was defeated by a vote of 712 to 626 in a contentious February election. The UAW claims the outcome was unfairly swayed by pro-business, anti-union forces, including Senator Bob Corker and political advocate Grover Norquist.
This new decision by the NLRB essentially gives workers backed by the anti-UAW National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation and Southern Momentum a formal voice in the impending hearing on the UAW's appeal of the vote.

Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members. Click on over to view the extensive gallery of high-quality images from Ran When Parked.
