From the Editors of AutoWeek written April 25, 2013: The Jetta is Volkswagen's franchise player in the United States. Last year, two of every five VWs sold here were a Jetta. The success springs from a simple formula: Combine a roomy compact sedan with a firm German ride and a sticker price that doesn't break the bank. It's been a winner for more than three decades in the States. The sixth-generation Jetta arrived two summers ago as a 2011 model. Designed with Americans in mind - part of VW's plan to boost US sales to 800,000 units by 2018 - the wheelbase grew 2.9 inches for more rear-seat legroom. New styling and a 0.8-inch cut in height resulted in a wider, sportier look. In its first full year on the market, sales soared 43.9 percent. VW swapped the previous generation's platform independent rear suspension for a beam axle and shifted the faux leather for upper trim levels. Low-level models sported too much hard plastic on the inside. To some, this Jetta felt cheap. Not so with the Jetta GLI which returned for the 2012 model year. Here is a well-equipped sixth-generation car with an independent rear suspension, sport tuning, lowered ride height and a limited-slip differential. Spotters should look for the larger front spoiler with vertical fog lights, red brake calipers and dual exhaust tips. Inside, the GLI is fitted for serious fun with large-bolster sport seats and a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel and shifter, all with contrast red stitching. Your feet play with aluminum petals. Upgrading the Jetta GLI to the Autobahn trim gets you the Fender Panasonic audio system with 400 watts of sonic boom and a subwoofer in the trunk. VW fans recognize the upgraded hardware - it comes from the revered Golf GLI hatchback. But on the showroom floor, Americans overwhelmingly choose sedans. The GLI also donates Volkswagen's vaunted 2.0 liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 200 HP and 207 lb-ft of torque. Power flows to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. The purist in us favors the manual, but we tested a 2012 Jetta GLI with the DSG dual-clutch transmission. The first thing we learned is that the traction and stability control cannot be turned off. So a 0-60 mph sprint starts with a brief burst of wheel spin at launch as the turbo burst rises but is quickly shut down by the electronic watchdogs. We reached 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 15.1 seconds at 93.3 mph. Now here's a hint for DSG owners: Put the shifter in sport mode, which permits the engine to briefly rev past the 6,000-rpm redline before changing gears. Thrown into corners, it takes a little care to push the GLI just short of the limit, where the momentum-killing electronics take over. We covered the slalom in 7.9 seconds at 42.4 mph and pulled 0.84 g on the skid pad. Overall, the car feels quite stable and the sport seats grip you without inflicting pain. The Jetta GLI's performance makes owners grin, but the value - on the sticker and at the gas pump - has them bust out in a smile. The car feels as planted as a BMW 3-series wrote one owner. For me, the price, performance and extra equipment make this the best all-around car for an enthusiast on a budget. We agree.

Brazil contemplates safety exemption for VW Kombi as it goes out of production today [w/poll]

Tue, 31 Dec 2013

Brazil: the country of carnivals, indescribable beauty adjacent to abject poverty, Ayrton Senna and old Volkswagen models. Only they're not old - they're new, they're just based on old designs. The original Beetle continued production there long after it had been phased out elsewhere, but the original Kombi van has lasted much longer. That ends today, however, with the iconic VW Microbus ambling out of production on the last day of 2013.
VW kept making the van in Brazil with the original air-cooled 1.2-liter boxer four until 2005, after which the original design was updated with a 1.4-liter water-cooled engine. Today, however, it ultimately falls prey to safety regulations that mandate that all vehicles - no matter how old their design - need to have airbags and ABS, forcing Volkswagen do Brasil to cease production of the Microbus after a 56-year production run. But the latest word is that the Kombi (as it's presently known) could get a stay of execution - or at least a resurrection in short order.
According to reports, the Brazilian government is looking into granting the Type 2 Microbus an exemption from said safety regulations, reasoning that the van was designed long before the advent of airbags and ABS. If the measure goes through, the Kombi Last Edition (pictured above) could prove not to be the last at all. So what do you think, should the Microbus get an exemption from Brazilian safety regulations for nostalgia's sake? Vote in our poll below, then have your say in Comments.

Volkswagen Golf R Evo may debut at Beijing Motor Show

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

If a report in Auto Express is correct, a lighter, faster brother to the Volkswagen Golf R will be shown to the world at the Beijing Motor Show in April. Said to be called the Golf R Evo, the even harder hot hatch would be unveiled as one of those concepts that's practically a de facto presentation of the genuine thing. The Evo in its name will come from having a carbon fiber roof and CF in the bodywork, lighter wheels, thinner bucket seats up front and a roll cage instead of rear seats.
If there's a power increase, it's been described as "a small bump." However, as the report mentions, if the Jenny Craig regimen can drop 100 kilograms (220 pounds) from the the 3,247-pound weight of the European Golf R, then the Golf R Evo will do about the same damage on the scales as the Golf but have at least 50 more horsepower and 44 more pound-feet of torque.
Since we still don't have the current Golf, this isn't something that should keep you awake even if the 'concept' does become a production model. But it is good to know that the Golf R is really going to start pushing its boundaries.

Anti-union group files lawsuit against VW and UAW

Fri, 14 Mar 2014

The fight for unionization at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, TN, factory isn't letting up. Yesterday, the National Labor Relations Board decided to allow anti-United Auto Workers employees at the plant the right to defend voting down the measure. Now, a group called the National Right to Work Foundation has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of five workers against VW and the UAW for allegedly working together to organize.
The group says in a release that it wants "to block further collusion between the company and the United Auto Workers." It alleges that VW forced workers to attend "mandatory pro-union meetings" and prevented managers from opposing. In a rebuttal on its website, the UAW called the claims "baseless" and said its actions were entirely legal.
One possible problem faces the carmaker in regards to the lawsuit. According to the Detroit Free Press, a recent US Court of Appeals ruling found that neutrality agreements like the one the business had with the UAW could be illegal if the company provided "things of value" to the union. The newspaper also claims that VW held a mandatory employee meeting concerning the election, but workers were free to leave during the UAW's presentation.
