2004 Volkswagen Jetta Tdi Sedan 4-door 1.9l- Mobile, Alabama on 2040-cars
Fruitdale, Alabama, United States
Avg 40 mpg. I am the third owner and bought the car at 106K in Feb 2009. Cam shaft and followers replaced at about 100K by previous owner and I have the receipt. Runs great, very cold A/C, very good tires, new battery, new alternator. I have receipts for all repairs I've made, tires, battery, etc. I have only used synthetic oil. According to the previous owner (a dealer who had been using this as a family car for two years), the timing belt was replaced at 90K, but I don't have that receipt. I had it checked by a mechanic recently and he said it looks fine. I have only made minor repairs. Look up anne1453 on the TDIclub forum to see any of my posts/questions/problems over the past 4 years: http://forums.tdiclub.com
This has been a very reliable car. It has great power and very cold A/C. I bought a Prius from a friend and no longer need the Jetta. Comes with Autel Maxscan VAG405 computer code reader. There are two glow plugs that need to be replaced, which make the check engine light come on. I bought the reader because I recently had a bad diagnosis of faulty transmission (caused by low battery/alternator - both replaced) and wanted the ability to check the codes myself to sure there are no additional problems if the check engine light comes on. Private party value: Edmunds $4937, KBB $4489. |

IIHS says these are the safest cars of 2013
Wed, 02 Jan 2013The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed its annual list of Top Safety Picks, an award that highlights automobiles it says offer "superior crash protection." A new and still more significant award, the Top Safety Pick+ honor, is given to those vehicles that earn good ratings for occupant protection in four out of five areas of measure. And while some 117 vehicles were given the TSP seal of approval for 2013, just 13 passed muster for TSP+.
To be fair, IIHS only evaluated 29 vehicles with its new testing procedures for TSP+ (we'd expect that the number of qualified cars will rise substantially for 2014). Luxury and Near Luxury midsize cars were the first groups evaluated, followed by midsizers in the Moderately Priced Cars category - unsurprisingly, it's only midsize cars that you'll find among the class this year.
Only two luxury sedans made the list of 13 for 2013: the Acura TL and Volvo S60. The other 11 cars on the list included entries from domestic, Japanese and German car makers: Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (sedan and coupe), Kia Optima (but not its close kin, the Hyundai Sonata, strangely), Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Suzuki Kizashi and the Volkswagen Passat all made the grade.
Volkswagen and Funny or Die take humorous spin in 2015 Golf
Wed, 10 Sep 2014Volkswagen is partnering with Target and Funny or Die in a bizarre ad for the latest Golf starring comedian Rob Huebel, probably best known for his work on Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim.
The commercial is titled The Way Too Helpful Neighbor and stars Huebel as the eponymous neighbor. The challenge is for Huebel to help improve his buddy's apartment before the guy meets his girlfriend's parents for the first time. The obvious way to do that is to slide a new Golf through an actual Target in Texas, while simultaneously showcasing the store's goods and the car's features.
The commercial is airing online now and on TBS during breaks in Conan O'Brien's show, with sneak peaks during other programs on the network. Auto advertising is becoming pretty normal for Funny or Die at this point, though, with the site previously partnering with Fiat for several videos. Check out the ad above and see if you think it works. Scroll down for VW's announcement.
VW recalls 1.1M Jetta, Beetle models in US, China over suspension fears
Fri, 17 Oct 2014Volkswagen is recalling about 1.1 million vehicles in China and North America in a newly announced campaign affecting the rear suspensions on some models. For the US, the action covers about 442,265 vehicles, including 400,602 examples of its 2011-2013 Jetta and 41,663 units of the 2012-2013 Beetle and Beetle Convertible. According to Reuters, the recall affects a further 126,000 vehicles in Canada and about 581,090 in China, including related market-specific models like the Sagitar.
The problem can occur if the affected models have a collision to the rear or the side-rear of the vehicle. It's then possible for the trailing arms on the torsion-beam rear suspension to be damaged. If the harm isn't noticed, then the part could fracture while driving. Obviously, a broken rear suspension is going to have an adverse effect on handling.
To fix things, VW dealers will inspect the trailing arms on the models, and they will all receive a sheetmetal part that will make a distinctive sound if broken in the future. If already damaged, the entire torsion beam will be replaced. Obviously, this work will be done at no charge to owners.
