New York, New York, United States

For Sale: 2006 VW Golf GLS TDI (black, four-door, automatic transmission).
Low mileage: 83,400
VIN: 9BWGR61J664001918

Great car for liability, strong powertrain and incredible gas mileage (advertised as 41 on highway but is much closer to 50). Up-to-date on maintenance, meaning you won't have to shell out $2000 for the belts as you may for some cars at this mileage and beyond. Kelley Blue Book Value for this model at this mileage is $11,950.

Clean carfax report available. Never crashed, no incidents to report. Car was purchased certified used from a VW dealer in 2009, with 40,000 miles on it.

This is a Golf Mk4, which is a great car but hard to find in the US.

It is also extremely fun to drive.

Sun roof, power locks and windows, premium alloy wheels, windshield, windows all in perfect condition.  In addition to the CD and sound system (which is unusually good on the 2006), there is also a built in iPhone/iPod hook-up for playing music.

Engine: Everything in order. Starts immediately on cold and warm. Turbo, water pump, and all belts (including timing) replaced at 75k miles. Oil replaced every 3k miles with Full Synthetic. No oil leaks.  A/c blows cold.

Automatic Transmission: shifts smooth front and reverse.

Tires: All four just replaced/aligned with good winter tires. Front brakes and rotors replaced circa 70,000 miles.

Selling because my work is relocating to New York, where I do not want to keep a car. But I am sad to let it go.

Email with questions, and I will be glad to set up a phone appointment to discuss further.

Skoda Octavia vRS is just the thing for your pumped-up neighborhood

Fri, 26 Jul 2013

Skoda, oh Skoda. You're just so cool. Maybe it's the fact that it's a brand that we don't get in these United States, but Skoda's rebadged Volkswagens, in particular the new Octavia vRS shown here, are just different enough from the hum-drum VWs on our shores that the Czech brand seems strangely desirable. Maybe we're just craving forbidden fruit.
This short, minute-long spot covers the new vRS in a world of excess, where strollers ride on 26-inch wheels, lawnmowers feature V8 engines and ice cream cones are the size of toddlers. As things often go in these ads, the Octavia vRS draws the eyes of passerby that are seemingly use to things far more ridiculous than a reasonably priced Czech sedan. In reality, the Octavia should be fairly familiar to American buyers. It uses the same 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-pot found in the Volkswagen GTI and Jetta GLI, with 217 horsepower, and sits on the same platform as the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf. Take a look at the full spot, below.

Porsche 911 with VW turbodiesel prepares for LeMons assault

Fri, 21 Mar 2014

LeMons racing is a wonderful example that setting limits can actually breed creativity. The series mandates that all entries must cost $500, not counting safety equipment, and that cap forces teams to be ingenious in how they build a racecar. Take for example this diesel-powered Porsche 911, which its creators have dubbed Ferkel the Nein-11, that will be racing in the Sears Pointless race this weekend in Sonoma, California.
This Frankenstein combines a 911 chassis that was originally bought just for its European powertrain and a Volkswagen TDI diesel engine mounted in the rear. After deciding the shell could still be of some use, the team decided to go racing. "We began brainstorming what replacement drivetrain to use for maximum offense and there was really only one answer: a diesel," said Philipp von Weitershausen, one of the team captains, to Jalopnik. They bought a 1998 Jetta TDI on the cheap and started figuring out a way to hack the engine into the bay. To pay respect to the donor, the VW's trunk was highly modified (and drilled) and grafted onto the back of Ferkel.
This team isn't a newcomer to LeMons. Its last car was a classic VW Beetle with a Subaru engine and dual controls, named Ferdinand the Bug, which could be driven from the left or right side. It's quite a sight.

Volkswagen offers Beetle Classic, priced from $20,195*

Tue, 23 Sep 2014

The current Volkswagen Beetle already tries to be a fairly retro-looking ride by cribbing styling elements from the iconic original. However, for the new, limited-edition Classic model, VW is hopping into the time machine to grab even more vintage cues. The company is even cutting the price, perhaps in hopes of turning around flagging sales this year. You don't need to wait long for any of these upgrades either because the automaker says that the Classic goes on sale this week for $20,195, *excluding the $820 destination charge. That's $100 less than a bone-stock Beetle.
Starting as a standard Beetle with VW's 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, the Classic edition comes with a six-speed automatic and then adds some retro flair. It includes new vintage-look 17-inch wheels with simulated dog dish polished hubcaps over black spokes. It also comes with a rear spoiler, and the automaker is offering the model in Pure White, Black Uni, and Reflex Silver.
The interior mixes in a few more classic touches but includes modern amenities like a standard navigation system, satellite radio and multifunction steering wheel. However, the seats are finished in a two-tone design combining light brown leatherette on the sides and checked cloth centers, plus lumbar support for the driver's side. The shift knob and handbrake also get wrapped in leather.
