You want some thing more rare than a 23 or 21 window? Well here it is. This is a one of a kind optioned 85k original mile 1967 double door camper. 1967 Double factory door camper. 4 year restoration. Only 80k absolutely original miles. I bought this van from the second owner here in the Pacific North West. This bus was originally delivered to Hawaii. The low original mileage is due to the van being on a small island for many years. The van has its factory M Code plate which verifies the factory options and delivery destination. This is a factory ordered double door camper (I have documentation). Most campers ordered in the states went to Sundial, Riviera, EZ Camper for there camping conversion. Any camper delivered to Hawaii was installed by the VW dealership making this a super rare bus with its rare options. The camper kit was factory dealer installed at the VW dealership it was purchased at new in Hawaii. The bus had minimal rust due to being garaged most of its life and being ordered with undercoating which is still in excellent condition. All metal work was professionally done using correct replacement panels. This bus has been fully restored. New 1641 engine. New free way flyer transmission, IRS (no reduction boxes), dual carbs. This bus was stripped down to a bare shell, media blasted inside and out and professionally repainted inside and out including the engine bay using factory early VW bus colors of Sand Green and Palm Green correct single stage paint. Over 80 hours into the restored camping windows alone. 17 inch Escra Raider wheels. The one of a kind interior took me a year working on it off and on to complete. I used the same factory interior panels and colors as would be found in a 64 deluxe. All interior and exterior colors are factory VW paint codes and reproduction interior upholstery finishes. There is less than 750 miles on the complete restoration. Motor- Less than 750 miles on rebuilt motor. Rebuilt 1641 dual port. Big valve heads, rebuilt dual Kadron carbs, dual high performance air cleaners, new muffler, dual Empi intakes, new fuel and vac lines, new fuel pump, and alternator. The engine bay is spotless as seen in the pictures and was media blasted and professionally repainted as was the rest of the bus. The motor is finely tuned and runs like a sewing machine. Transmission- Less than 750 miles on rebuilt big nut freeway flyer transmission. (for those of you who don't know, a freeway flyer is a transmission geared higher) These transmissions are a great improvement over stock transmissions and allow you to cruise at highway speeds with ease and comfort. The IRS coupled with the freeway flyer transmission and higher horse power motor gives you a bus that drives and handles more like a car. The IRS was professionally installed, (The reduction boxes have been removed). New axles and shift bushing. The transmission shifts crisp and precise. Paint & Body- This bus was completely disassembled and stripped down to a bare shell. The entire bus was media blasted to bare metal in side and out including the engine bay. The bus had dealer installed under coating, so the under carriage and belly pans were in excellent condition and needed no rust repair. The rust repair includes, lower 3 inches of nose, all four cargo door inner and outer lower section, both left and right lower rockers, front floor corners, battery tray on right side. All metal work was done using the finest metal replacement panels and professionally installed by a well know body shop. This bus is completely 100% RUST FREE. The under carriage is spotless. The bus was painted using factory paint colors of Sand Green (L-311), and Palm Green (L-312), these are factory 1955 to 1958 VW bus colors. The paint is over 3 years old and shows no blemishes coming through the paint. The bus was painted using the correct single stage PPG paint finish. A lot of thought and detail went into picking the interior and exterior colors paying tribute to factory correct 1955 to 1964 finishes. The bus was painted completely inside and out including but not limited to the engine bay. The paint looks absolutely gorgeous. The panels are arrow strait and have little to no filler. High end Safari front windows, the frames were completely disassembled and painted the body color. The Hehr windows were completely disassembled, rebuilt and fully polished. The Hehr windows have over 80 hours invested in them alone in polishing and rebuilding them. Both front and rear bumpers are perfect with no dings or previous damage. Both bumpers were completely disassembled and repainted. The factory under coating is still in excellent condition. All new door and window rubber seals through out ect. All new lenses. Dash is uncut and in perfection condition. DYNA Mat was used through out the entire bus including the entire roof, behind all door panels, floor and engine bay area and doubled up in certain areas. Creative Engineering Safari windows. New door handles, locks, ect. The paint has never been polished and only washed a hand full of times. Hundreds of hours went into the paint and body work alone.... Interior- A lot of time and thought went
into the interior design. My goal was to keep all interior colors and
finishes correct using interior color and finishes from 1964 options.
All interior door panels were ordered from TMI.
The colors I
picked are factory 1964 colors ordered with standard and deluxe buses.
The interior option code is 292 (Basalt Grey and Silver Beige). I chose
not install deluxe chrome interior trim as I thought the minimalist look
was the way to go and fit my design concept better. All seats, jump
seat, and Z bed were completely disassembled. The front seat frames were
sand blasted
and repainted. All seats were reupholstered by a high end hot rod shop,
done to the highest standards. Note, these are not the cheap TMI seat covers, these are custom made by a professional upholstery shop. All vinyl was ordered from TMI
to ensure colors are factory correct for 1964. The rear Z-bed springs
were replaced with a memory foam padding. All seats have custom memory
foam type padding, not the cheap and uncomfortable TMI
coconut fiber padding. The goal was to make the seats comfortable to
drive on long road trips. The complete headliner and lower half of the
interior panels were custom made out of Baltic Birch wood. All panels
were carefully hand picked for the desired grain and color. All interior
Birch wood was professional cut out using factory templates. Every
panel and trim piece received 5 coats of clear varnish. The panels were
completely wet sanded in between coats. Needless to say this took an
untold amount of hours..... A lot of planning went into installing the
headliner making sure no screws were visible. All interior lights and
electrical work perfect. New front mat, and wheel well cover mats. All
cabinets are original to the bus when ordered new and have the correct
1967 date codes stamped on the ID tag. I used a high end birch wood
flooring throughout the cargo area. All cabinets were reinforced with
metal brackets to ensure they last another 40 years. All interior cabinets
are lined with carpet. All interior brackets, interior hardware, Z bed
brackets ect were sand blasted and repainted. All inside
window trim was custom fitted. Plenty of storage under jump seat, z
bed, closets ect. I went out of my way to try to hide mounting screws on
interior trim and panels, this attention to detail is what sets this
van apart from other restorations. I have over $7,000 invested in the
interior alone. There is much more work that I did to the interior, I
tried to list all the high lights. Brakes & Suspension- New brake wheel
cylinders front and rear. All new soft and hard brake lines, new shoes,
all drums were turned, new dual circuit master cylinder. All wheel
bearings were replaced or repacked. The brakes have been finely tuned and
work excellent. New steering box, KYB performance gas
shocks front and rear. IRS rear suspension, (no reduction boxes). The van steers tight, and handles
awesome. Other- 1967 was the first year of 12 volt. Brand new Escra Raider 17 inch wheels, brand new tires. The rear tires are slightly bigger and wider than the fronts to give the van a aggressive stance. Optima battery. Rare VW Rack completely sand blasted and repainted to body color. The rack is worth a $1000 alone. Pivoting safari wiper hinges. The bus has its original M-Code plate. New reproduction seat belts up front. Rebuilt and restored gas tank with new sending unit. Over $500 in Dyna Mat sound deadening material was used through out the entire bus shell. Rare set of factory tools and jack. My design concept was based on a "what VW should have built concept". My goal was to build a "greatest hits vw bus" using popular interior and exterior colors, finishes and materials staying true to factory original look and details specific to the era. The drive train was upgraded for reliability, drivibility, comfort, and safety. Only factory correct VW finishes and parts were used during the restoration. The attention to detail is what sets this van apart from other restorations. No expense or untold hours of labor were spared in this one of a kind build. This 4 year restoration was a labor of love. More rare than a 23 or 21 window and much more usable. This van can be used, and was purpose built to tour the country in comfort and style. I have only taken the van to a couple non VW shows and it took home 1rst in its class both times. I originally built this van to keep. Only selling to purchase another collector car. One of the finest restored split window buses in the country. This would be the perfect center piece in any VW collection. Although I tried to be thorough in the description, I know there is much I left out. Feel free to call with any questions. I can have this bus shipped to your front door at whole sale cost ** Over 85 Additional pictures and information as well as other nice VW buses can be seen on my web site WESTCOASTSAMBA . VW Chattanooga plant very close to UAW representation
Tue, 11 Nov 2014After months of fighting from both sides, it looks like the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, TN, might unionize under the United Auto Workers after all. According to a letter acquired by The Associated Press, VW and the UAW reportedly struck a deal last spring where the union agreed to stop its challenge of the organization vote with the National Labor Relations Board to help clear the way for the CrossBlue to be produced in Tennessee. In exchange, the automaker would recognize the UAW at the plant. Leaders of the Local 42 at the facility reportedly signed the letter.
It seems that such an agreement would clear the way for the factory to unionize after months of dispute. According to The Detroit News, under Tennessee law, workers aren't required to join the organization. Although, that might not be a problem. As of a few months ago, Local 42 already claimed to have signed around 700 of the plant's roughly 1,500 workers.
Controversy has constantly swirled around the possible unionization at the Chattanooga plant. The UAW held its official decision in February and lost 712 to 626. However, there were allegations of intense political pressure to make sure the ballot failed. A later report also found that VW was offered $300 million in incentives well before the vote to make sure things progressed to the "satisfaction of the State of Tennessee," but the deal was later retracted. In July, the UAW opened Local 42 on the campus in hopes of signing up a majority of the workforce by volunteering to be a part of it.
How VW's hyper-efficient XL1 will influence the next Golf
Mon, 18 Aug 2014In 2007, the European Union mandated fleet average CO2 emissions of 158.7 g/km. For 2015, that figure will drop to 130 g/km, and the target for 2020 is an ambitions 95 g/km. Thanks to some German politicking, that target will be phased in from 2020 to 2024, but it will still apply to 80 percent of passenger cars in that first year. In US miles per gallon, that's the equivalent of going from about 35 mpg to 42 mpg to 57 mpg. The current Volkswagen Golf is rated from 85 g/km of CO2 to 190 g/km depending on model - and zero for the e-Golf, so for the next-generation MkVIII hatch due in 2019, to meet the goal, Volkswagen engineers will need to introduce a bunch of new tricks. According to a report in Autocar, VW be mining its hyper-efficient XL1 for some of them.
Predictions for the next Golf include a variable-compression engine, an electric flywheel and an electric turbo, along with taking greater advantage of coasting. Volkswagen could be getting help from Audi with the electric turbo and variable-compression engine and electric turbo, with Audi already having shown off the former and brand technical boss Ulrich Hackenberg confirming the VW Group is working on the latter. It's possible the flywheel system could also have the mark of The Four Rings: Autocar mentions a British system that Volvo is testing, but the R18 e-tron Quattro racer has been using one for years.
The need for such features is because the company won't be able to net enough future gains from just aerodynamic improvements and advanced materials. As price will be a factor (the regulations are expected to "add hundreds of euros to the cost of building a car"), adding much more aluminum or carbon fiber is an unlikely option. We're told the next generation won't be longer or wider than the current car, and being Europe's most popular model, VW doesn't want to make a big bet on futuristic aero, but the report says the MkVIII will "likely" have "the most aerodynamic treatment yet seen on a production vehicle," the area where lessons learned from the XL1 will truly be seen.
Skoda unveils Volkswagen Up!-based Citigo
Tue, 27 Sep 2011This is the all-new Skoda Citigo, and if you're thinking that it looks rather familiar, that's because its Volkswagen-badged kin recently debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. That's right, the long-rumored Skoda version of Volkswagen's new Up! city car has finally arrived.
Buyers will have a choice of two 1.0-liter three-cylinder engines - one with 59 horsepower, the other with a 74 hp and a blistering 106 mph top speed - both mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Powerful they are not, but these three-bangers should prove to be extremely efficient, with Skoda quoting fuel economy numbers of 62.8 and 60.1 miles per gallon, respectively (on the European cycle).
Being a Skoda, the Citigo will go on sale in its home market of the Czech Republic this fall, with the rest of Europe getting the car next summer. Follow the jump for Skoda's official release.
