1977 VW Westfalia

Runs and Drives Excellent

This Westy was part of an estate and has been stored in a heated warehouse since 1996. It is clean and virtually rust free. The odometer shows 56,504 miles. The engine was overhauled to the tune of $3000.00 at 56,479 miles in 1996 (have receipt) so the engine has about 25 miles on it.

I had it towed to a reputable VW mechanic shop and had them go through the bus and get it running. They drained the gas, replaced the fuel pump and filter, cleaned injectors, new plugs, inspected brakes, put new bushing in the shift linkage and installed correct 185R14 light truck tires. A good spare tire was bolted to the front and a new battery installed. The owner of the shop said the bus is clean enough that the mileage could be 56k, not 156k. He was very impressed with how rust free the body and undercarriage was.  Mechanically the bus is in great shape.

It is also equipped with a DPD air conditioning unit. Although it is not currently working all of the components are there from the compressor to the under dash unit.

The body is in good shape except for a dent in the drivers front. The under side of the bus is excellent with no rust. Floors are excellent. Of course it needs paint, but looks presentable the way it is. One of the slat windows is missing from the sliding door. Looks like a little bit of body work was done on the rear 1/4, but it looks good and is difficult to detect. All of the doors open and close great and the slider works the way it should.

The interior is in good shape and very original. Seats are great except for a small tear in the drivers. Beds are good and the original kids cot is included. All of the original curtains are there including the one that goes around the inside of the windshield for privacy at the campground. Cabinets need some restoration and the original table is missing. All of the gauges work to include fuel gauge. Radio is missing. Has the sink, ice box, and inverter.

The canvas top is the original unit and is in good condition but has some pin holes in the front.

Overall this is a good driver and an excellent candidate for restoration.

Volkswagen and Funny or Die take humorous spin in 2015 Golf

Wed, 10 Sep 2014

Volkswagen is partnering with Target and Funny or Die in a bizarre ad for the latest Golf starring comedian Rob Huebel, probably best known for his work on Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim.
The commercial is titled The Way Too Helpful Neighbor and stars Huebel as the eponymous neighbor. The challenge is for Huebel to help improve his buddy's apartment before the guy meets his girlfriend's parents for the first time. The obvious way to do that is to slide a new Golf through an actual Target in Texas, while simultaneously showcasing the store's goods and the car's features.
The commercial is airing online now and on TBS during breaks in Conan O'Brien's show, with sneak peaks during other programs on the network. Auto advertising is becoming pretty normal for Funny or Die at this point, though, with the site previously partnering with Fiat for several videos. Check out the ad above and see if you think it works. Scroll down for VW's announcement.

VW says it has sold over 100,000 TDI diesels in America this year

Thu, 26 Dec 2013

Volkswagen Group of America has lit oil-burning fireworks to celebrate the sales of more than 100,000 TDI Clean Diesel vehicles in the US between its VW and Audi brands this year. According to VW, that means it is responsible for more than 75 percent of diesel-engined cars and SUVs sold here - perhaps not surprising when the two brands offer a total of 12 diesel models.
What might be surprising is that the number of diesels isn't far off the estimated sales of 90,000 battery electric vehicles and PHEVs, with 15,000 of those accounted for by the Tesla Model S, another 12,000 or so being the Toyota Prius PHEV.
VW's keen to play up the ease of making diesel part of your life, stressing that it doesn't need any change to the refueling infrastructure and that "this is a technology delivering real answers to society's concerns about fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions without compromises."

VW makes $9.2B offer for rest of truckmaker Scania

Sun, 23 Feb 2014

Volkswagen owns or has controlling interests in three commercial truck operations: besides its own, VW began buying shares in Sweden's Scania in 2000 and now controls 89.2 percent of its shares and 62.6 percent of its capital, then bought into Germany's Man in 2006 - in order to prevent Man from trying to take over Scania - and now owns 75 percent of it. The car company has managed to work out 200 million euros in savings, but believes it can unlock a total of 650 million euros in savings if it takes outright control of Scania and can spread more common parts among the three divisions.
It has proposed a 6.7-billion-euro ($9.2 billion) buyout, but according to a Bloomberg report, Scania's minority investors don't appear inclined to the deal. Although effectively controlled by VW, Scania is an independently-listed Swedish company, and a profitable one at that: in the January-September 2013 period its operating profit was 9.4 percent compared to Man's 0.4 percent. Some of the other shareholders believe that Scania is better off on its own and will not approve the deal, some have asked an auditor to look into the potential conflict of interest between VW and Man, while some are willing to examine the deal and "make an evaluation based on what a long-term owner finds is good," which might not be just "the stock market price plus a few percent." The buyout will only be official assuming VW can reach the 90-percent share threshold that Swedish law mandates for a squeeze-out.
Many of the arguments against boil down to investors believing that Scania's Swedishness and unique offerings are what keep it profitable, and ownership by the German car company will kill that. (Have we heard that somewhere before?) If Volkswagen can buy that additional 0.8-percent share in Scania, perhaps its buyout wrangling with Man will give it an idea of what it's in for: "dozens" of minority investors in the German truckmaker have filed cases against VW, seeking higher prices for their shares. It is likely only to delay the inevitable, though. If VW is really going to compete with Daimler and Volvo in the truck market, it has to get the size, clout and savings to do so.
