1976 Vw Bus Camper, Runs, Needs Bodywork on 2040-cars

Year:1976 Mileage:140364

Perryville, Kentucky, United States

I have owned this bus for over 20 years.  I drove it regular until 2008 when it started to get some rust on it.  I intended to do the body work myself but never even got started.  I recently realized I was over Buses and decided to part with it.
There is a lot of rust.  I took pictures of all the major problem areas.  I do not think that there is any thing structural but I am not a body work person so I am guessing on that.
I put a battery in it over the weekend and cranked it a little bit to move the oil around.  I gave it a shot of starting either and it fired right up.  This was the first time in at least two years that I had started it and it idled out fine and did not put out much smoke.  I drove it out of my shop and parked it where you see it.
Here is what I know about it:
-The heater exchange rusted out on one side so I welded some pipe together to put the exhaust system back together.  I did this about two years before I quit driving it.
-Several of the window seals are dry rotted pretty good.
-The wind Shield has a small chip in it that has been there for years. It also has been leaking in the center where the seal separated.
-The sink holding tank I have not tried to use in years so I do not know if the little pump still works.
-There is no frig on this one just a built in Cooler.
-The canvas top is as you see it.  The screen is bad on one side and not great on the other.  The basic fabric seems to be okay.
-The drivers side seat is tore but the back seats, while needing a good cleaning, are not ripped.
-I do not know if I have the table and post.  I had them at one time but have not seen them in a awhile.  Assume they are missing.
-The tires have held air this whole time but they are older and starting to dry rot some.
-The brakes seemed to work fine.  Keep in mind I drove it about 30 ft.
-The pictures that you cannot tell what it is are of the rust through by the feet of the driver and passenger.
-I have not tried the CD player.  It used to have a loose connection on the power.  I would occasionally have to jiggle it.
Please note:
-While it does start and run I do not recommend driving it any distance.  The gas in the tank is as old as the oil.  It will drive up on a trailer fine but, having sat for so long there could be a host of minor problems that could break you down over distance. Of course once you buy it the choice, and responsibility, are yours.
-I make no claim on the engine other than its starts, idles, and has no obvious knocks, pings, etc.  It has sat for long enough that how it ran before then is not relevant.
-You are welcome to come and inspect it any time the auction is on.  Road testing will be limited due to lack of insurance and plates.  You can run up and down our country road a little though.  Just contact me to make arrangements.
The Important Stuff:
I am only selling it through ebay.  I will not entertain private offers while the auction is going.
No foreign bids accepted of any kind.
$100, non-refundable, deposit required from the buyer within 48 hours of end of Auction.  Failure on this and I will re-list and block that bidder.  Sadly experience has taught me to be hard on this point.
Balance of buying price can be done several ways, contact me on winning the bid and we will work it out.
Buyer has 30 days to complete the deal and pick up bus or (and I hate to have to say this) it will be re-listed.
This was a good bus for us for a lot of years.  It needs a good home (and some body work) to make it a fun vehicle for someone.
Feel free to ask any questions.
       Thanks for your interest.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

Volkswagen Routan dead, pour out a sippy cup for your little homies

Thu, 28 Mar 2013

America's minivan wolfpack has just gotten smaller by one. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen officials have confirmed what we've suspected for some time - the Routan is dead. Essentially a lightly reworked version of the Dodge Grand Caravan, the Routan actually hasn't been rolling off of Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario production line at all this year, but VW had yet to confirm its discontinuation. However, Jonathan Browning, CEO of VW America, has reportedly admitted that the Routan is being axed, with remaining units expected to be funneled into corporate functions for "internal purposes."
The move isn't unexpected - the Routan has never been a big seller, with just 57,650 examples moved since sales began in 2008 - peak yearly sales totaled under 16,000 units, and that was back in 2010. And while many have talked of the minivan segment shrinking, Automotive News points out that the segment actually grew 14 percent last year to 597,118 units, though it should be noted that most segments have been on sales upticks as the US economy chugs out of its recession.
So, is volume-crazy Volkswagen prepared to pass on large family vehicle sales? Probably not - the German automaker has signaled that it plans to build a three-row crossover in North America soon, and we wouldn't be surprised if it looks an awful lot like the Crossblue Concept from January's Detroit Auto Show - minus the fancy plug-in diesel powertrain.

Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show

Mon, 05 Mar 2012

The Volkswagen Group is comprised of 11 brands producing 240 vehicles across 49 factories throughout the world. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.
To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. We'll be delving into the details of each over the next two days of show coverage, but before that happens, you can read all about what we saw tonight from the cheap seats after the break.
