US $8,500.00
Year:1973 Mileage:50000
Location:

Sedro Woolley, Washington, United States

Sedro Woolley, Washington, United States

We are offering our VW Riviera Camper for sale. Easily the best bus on the market, and although it is still a work in progress, this auction will prove if a new owner is out there for ol' Oscar. We have made it our summer project for the past two years (engine and innards were mostly done in 2013), although we are moving soon and rather than storing this beauty and hiding it away, we thought it may better suit other eager owners. We are also selling the associated camping items seen in the photographs, with some exceptions. Please see the full list of items at the bottom, or contact for questions, bill statements, or other random VW riviera facts.

As of now the interior is void of any fixtures (save front seats), and is being sanded and sealed to remove current rusted areas and prevent future rust. It will also receive a primer and paint layer before a new interior is installed - but be warned - THE PRICE WILL RISE in future auctions if it doesn't sell as we add improvements, and we are unsure of how much time will be spent camping, and how much time will be spent restoring....

STUFF

A Volkswagen 'Riviera' is similar to a Westfalia, where both were built by contracted companies to help fill demand, and both made camper models for their respective regions. The Westfalia was originally designed for camping in Germany, while the Riviera was built by Riviera Motor Company - based out of Beaverton, Oregon - and was designed for camping in the Pacific Northwest. Another motor company based in Vancouver, WA helped meet high production demand, although the total number of Riviera Campers seen today is relatively low. With VW's recent announcement of a permanent retirement to the VW bus line and name as of 2013, well you get the idea.

The 1973 model has two rear hatches to access the engine compartment (unlike the '72), and the engine has been replaced/rebuilt prior to our ownership within the past 50,000 miles with a 2.0 Liter dual-carburetor gas motor - the largest suitable for this vehicle and more than you'll need. The bus reaches interstate speeds of up to 74 MPH on its own volition (on a flat road with the full original interior). The motor was hauled out and inspected last year, and new internal parts and service were verified. The original motor was replaced at one time with the 2 liter engine, and then this second engine as been overhauled 3-5 years ago, before it sat and eventually found our garage.  Its most recent inspection and overhaul is detailed more below.

A new and fully functional pop-top was added just before our purchase, and is still in excellent functioning condition (with original pulls and hooks). The 'penthouse pop-top' pads are the original, while the original 'downstairs' interior has certainly seen better days. Hence our decision has been to save the old, but replace with new. It is included in the sale, although it will need attention if originality is intended.

Our contributions have included new top-of-the-line brake rotors and calipers for the front, and new pads and break lines for the set. No pulling, and all long-lasting parts. The engine seals have been replaced as much as possible, although the inevitable oil-drip has still eluded me... for now. New filters, exhaust hosing, new carbs and other bits and bobs including a new battery, front belt, and plenty of oil changes and maintenance. New things will be added as we go, although the van runs and rolls great, and idles strong as-is.

The body is in need of work, but is at 90% integrity, with no structural rust.

SALE INCLUDES

The van and all things attached, including gas can and upper netting, and of course the 'Penthouse'.
One 14'x17' MONSTROUS (emphasis added) tent and rain-fly.
The removed interior including the rear cabinet,
the ice box/grill space/cabinet storage-thing,
the folding table,
a movable seat w/lifting cushion for storage,
interior paneling and floor mats,
curtain rods, the folding bench (this cloth not original),
and a portable toilet seat w/stand. Yep.
Also includes a sleeping bag and fleece blanket.
Some fake green grass in a duffel bag.
Power Outlet strip, and a 32" Flat Screen TV

SHIPPING AND PAYMENTS

Payments can realistically be made via PayPal, direct deposit, or in person with cash or cashier's check.

We can deliver the vehicle to the western U.S. - WA state to Texas and west - for three times the cost of gas.  Please contact for more details - these arrangements must be made seperately and are not apart of the sale price through eBay.  Otherwise, the buyer will be responsible for the shipping details and costs from Sedro-Woolley, WA (near Burlington and Bellingham).

VW readying new VR6 with forced induction

Fri, 27 Sep 2013

Volkswagen built a stonking, narrow-angle V6 in the 1980s and 1990s that was found in three different generations of the Golf (their performance iterations, obviously), three generations of the Passat, the New Beetle, the Corrado and the Touareg, among other VWs, a spate of Audis, Seats, a Skoda, and even the Porsche Cayenne. It was a sad day when it was announced that it'd be put out to pasture.
Rejoice, though, fans of the venerable VR6, because Volkswagen has a new, modern variant in the works that, according to AutoWeek, features direct injection and can easily be fitted with forced induction. In fact, AW mentions Volkswagen insiders that claim this unit will spawn a production version of the twin-turbo V6 shown on the Design Vision GTI from this year's Wörthersee festival. That unit produced an epic 503 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque.
Don't expect a production unit with that level of power (although it would make a hardy RS4 powerplant), though. In reality, AutoWeek is suspecting anywhere from 340 to 450 horsepower from the new mill. When it arrives at an undisclosed date in the future, it'll likely be found in the Passat and Passat CC as well as the production version of the CrossBlue.

VW Up Buggy may be headed to showrooms

Tue, 02 Jul 2013

Volkswagen showed six conceptual takes on its Up at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, one of those being the Up Buggy. Although few will probably remember it, VW has not forgotten it, applying for a patent for the Meyers Manx revival roadster way back in March 2012 and being approved in June of this year, according to a report in Autocar. That will give the automaker a 14-year lock on the design while it decides whether to move forward with a reboot of its past.
A patent doesn't mean the Up Buggy will ever move beyond the sheet-of-paper stage, but Autocar says VW is studying the market to see if a production version is feasible. We can't see North America ever getting it, but even so, we wouldn't complain if they made it - especially if they put an exposed engine in back that was set off by 18-inch-long twin tailpipes jutting straight up into the air. However, for a company that aims to be the world's number-one automaker by 2018, a niche vehicle for its mass-market brand would be a surprising use of resources.

Prop-driven VW Beetle hopes to land in Bonneville [w/video]

Thu, 10 Jan 2013

Sometimes you meet folks who, when they tell you "Hey, I have an idea," your reflex response is to stop what you're doing and tell yourself, "Get ready...." We imagine Mike Niemans is one of those folks, and the idea in question is putting a tank engine on a Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. Not just any old tank engine - as if there were such a thing when we're talking about putting them in cars - but a 668-cubic-inch, 220-horsepower radial engine built by Continental in 1941 and procured from an M2 tank.
In the image above Nieman is using the tank clutch hub to get the motor set up, but in one of the images below you can see what really belongs back there is: a two-inch, reverse-pitch prop taken from a wind generator. He says there's enough mojo with the propeller action to get the car rolling down the runway like a jet when he gives it gas - and speaking of gas, the engine's been refitted to run on propane.
After a few safety tweaks Nieman's going to take the matte-black Beetle to Bonneville, "put the prop on, let her go and see what happens!" We can't wait to see the video of that. There are two shakedown videos below to get you ready.
