This is the first model year of the New Beetle. I bought the car new in November of 1998 and it's the cleanest 14 year old car you'll find. It's got only 65,000+ original miles, and I'm the one and only owner. I have all the service records and the car has been very well maintained. It's only been driven in MA for just one year; it spent the last 11 years in WA state on salt-free roads. In addition to being in great shape overall, it's never been in an accident or had any incidental damage.

The interior is in very good shape, the fabric seats have some wear but no rips or tears. There is ample headroom for front seat passengers, and surprisingly decent rear seat legroom. The rear seat folds down flat and can carry a lot of stuff that way (I've taken many ski trips in this buggy). It drives great and gets 30+ mpg, with almost every option available for this model year: A/C, cruise, power windows and locks, 17" alloy wheels, ABS and yes, a cassette player. Compare it to any similar vintage Corolla or Civic and you'll get far more for your money.

Everything in the car is original and in working condition. There are a few minor issues, including: the wheel insert hubs are missing their VW emblems; the passenger side fog light doesn't work (and is very difficult to replace, or I would have); and the passenger side power window switch is a bit loose, but works fine.  The battery was replaced last year and the newer Michelin tires have < 10,000 miles on them (the first set of Michelins lasted 50K+ miles).  This is a terrific car, perfect for VW aficionados.

Sales terms: you pick up locally and pay with cashier's check or cash only.

2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible gets the R-Line treatment

Thu, 07 Feb 2013

Volkswagen just launched the topless Beetle Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, but we're already seeing the next step forward in the topless Bug range with this, the R-Line. We'll admit, this treatment falls under the "all show and no go" category, but it's still a pretty potent little cutie.
The R-Line starts with a standard Beetle Turbo Convertible but adds unique 19-inch aluminum wheels on lower-profile tires, LED daytime running lamps and Xenon headlamps. Naturally, there are R-Line badges aplenty both on the interior and exterior, and we must say, the whole package looks pretty darn snazzy.
Pricing has yet to be announced, but when it goes on sale later this year, the hotter convertible will join Volkswagen's growing R-Line portfolio that now includes the CC, Beetle hatch, Tiguan and Touareg.

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

Tue, 12 Feb 2013

More Fun Than A Prius, Less Sensible Than A TDI
Let's have some fun, and do some math. We're talking pretty rudimentary stuff, multiplication and division, to figure out if the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid can make a baseline case for itself against two very strong competitors in this segment. The competitors in question, at least for now, are two more Jettas: the diesel-drinking TDI and the fit-for-the-masses SE with VW's long-serving 2.5-liter engine.
To keep the equations clean and simple (hey, we're writers), we'll calculate based on the most flattering EPA miles per gallon stat from highway driving for all cars, assume a healthy 20,000 miles driven per year, and factor in today's average cost for the respective fuels these three require: diesel (TDI), regular (SE) and premium (Hybrid). We'll also start with the base prices for all models.

Porsche again staring down another $1.8B in hedge fund lawsuits

Wed, 15 May 2013

The sequence of events from 2007 that began with Porsche's secret attempt to take over Volkswagen, and instead lead to Porsche being taken over by VW, continues to instigate lawsuits against the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. A group of hedge funds that suffered over $1 billion in losses sued the car company in New York. Porsche had publicly stated it wasn't trying to buy VW, the hedge funds in question were shorting VW stock, and when Porsche's actual intentions were revealed, the stock shot up and the hedge funds took a beating.
The case was thrown out over the issue of jurisdiction, then appealed, only to see another suit filed on top of that. After that, most of the hedge funds withdrew their claims in New York and Porsche offered a 90-day window to refile in Germany where it is already fighting a number of other suits over the same issue. The hedge funds accepted the offer, refiling in Stuttgart for $1.8 billion in damages. According to Bloomberg, Porsche hasn't commented on the refiling, but as the same plaintiffs are involved, it's safe to assume that the carmaker still feels the case is "unsubstantiated and without merit." It has fared alright so far even in German courts, with two lesser cases against it thrown out last year.
