Provo, Utah, United States

Excellent condition 1974 Volkswagen Type 1. This vehicle isn't a restoration, astoundingly original. It has original wheels, windshield, paint, ceiling and carpet upholstery. The car was originally purchased in Yakima, WA in 1974. The owner died soon after and was garaged by the owner's children for a number of years with 8,000 miles. It was purchased by a Porsche collector in the early 2000's. I purchased the car in 2009 with 14,000 miles and have used it as a daily driver ever since. The vehicle has always been garaged and is virtually rust free, retaining the original paint. I replaced the seat upholstery with the same fabric in 2013. The car has various signs of originality throughout, such as the original 1974 emissions sticker on the engine. It looks like it has just rolled off of the assembly line.
The following changes have been made:
  • The addition of a Retro Sound deck that retains the look of the original radio but adds the functionality of an auxiliary connection and FM radio.
  • A removable cup holder that fits into the ashtray.
  • New seat upholstery 2013.
  • New tires 2014.
  • New speakers 2010
  • New breaks w/ master cylinder 2014

The following issues exist:
  • Small amount of rust on the inside of the rear bumper, can be re-chromed.
  • Paint on wheels is beginning to flake, will eventually need to be repainted.
  • 2" tear on passenger side door panel
The vehicle has been meticulously maintained by Independent Import of Provo, UT who specialize in classic German cars, and runs perfectly. There isn't anything to be addressed mechanically or any deferred maintenance. I have complete maintenance records since I have owned the car. Includes original owners manual, VW lifestyle magazines, and 1973 UT license plates.

Though the buyer is responsible for pickup or shipping, I am willing to help coordinate. The vehicle is also listed locally and is subject to removal of eBay listing.

VW recalls 1.1M Jetta, Beetle models in US, China over suspension fears

Fri, 17 Oct 2014

Volkswagen is recalling about 1.1 million vehicles in China and North America in a newly announced campaign affecting the rear suspensions on some models. For the US, the action covers about 442,265 vehicles, including 400,602 examples of its 2011-2013 Jetta and 41,663 units of the 2012-2013 Beetle and Beetle Convertible. According to Reuters, the recall affects a further 126,000 vehicles in Canada and about 581,090 in China, including related market-specific models like the Sagitar.
The problem can occur if the affected models have a collision to the rear or the side-rear of the vehicle. It's then possible for the trailing arms on the torsion-beam rear suspension to be damaged. If the harm isn't noticed, then the part could fracture while driving. Obviously, a broken rear suspension is going to have an adverse effect on handling.
To fix things, VW dealers will inspect the trailing arms on the models, and they will all receive a sheetmetal part that will make a distinctive sound if broken in the future. If already damaged, the entire torsion beam will be replaced. Obviously, this work will be done at no charge to owners.

VW pondering low-cost sub-brand for China?

Wed, 30 Jan 2013

More detail is being sketched into the Volkswagen Group's plan to launch a low-cost brand for emerging markets. Late last year a German report quoted a VW rep saying that the brand has been interested in building a no-frills car, the kind that would challenge Dacia and Datsun, for a while. With both Proton and Suzuki effectively out of the partnership picture, a report in Reuters suggests VW could go straight to China, developing a car with its joint venture partners and building and selling it there.
Officially, company CEO Martin Winterkorn said the issue of a model for emerging markets would be decided this year but VW isn't any closer to confirming any kind of plan for a car in its portfolio underneath the Up!, remarking to Reuters about the China possibility, "That's an issue we're currently looking at."

Volkswagen considering a four-door, four-seat XL1

Fri, 22 Aug 2014

According to a report in Autocar, Volkswagen might have more in mind for the XL1 than mining it for advances to grace the next-generation Golf. Aiming to fight the Honda FCEV due for public consumption next year, we're told VW executives have put a four-door, four-seater version of the XL1 - it could be called XL2 - on the drawing board. The impetus is said to come from the top, with VW Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch intent on staying in the deep end of "super-efficent vehicles."
Autocar suspects the necessary changes could raise the weight of the car from 1,749 pounds to 2,068 pounds, which would make it four pounds less than the 2,072-pound Up! we drove a few years ago. Crucially, however, the mag thinks the extra capacity wouldn't change the two-seater's 310-mile-per-gallon rating, with tech tweaks and the aerodynamic benefit of a longer car offsetting the weight. Speculation is that the back seats would be staggered like the fronts in order to maintain the XL1's overall profile.
We recently heard about another XL1 variant that's gone off the radar entirely, the Ducati-engined XLR that we thought we'd see at the Geneva Motor Show and that was said to be going into production, so this one could go the same way. The biggest hurdle to making such an idea a reality, though, could be the price: the current XL1 costs 110,000 euros ($146,116). If VW really is going to compete with the Honda FCEV and the Toyota FCV - $70,000 in Japan - that might be where it wants to start.
