1973 VW Classic Standard Beetle.  CUSTOM.

HISTORY:  The car came from NC to Michigan in the mid-1980's.  I bought it in 1986.  I used it as daily transportation for 2 years, then decided to customize it as I then had my 2-stroke SAAB for a daily driver.  The car went to an air-cooled VW specialist in Toledo.  The car was modified with:  1644cc pistons.  Shaved heads and deck.  3/4 race cam.  Weber twin choke progressive carburetor, balanced engine, lightened flywheel with double the number of dowels, external oil cooler, external oil filter (spin-on), extended oil sump, heavy duty oil pump, I retained the standard cooling tin to help keep engine cool, electric fuel pump with regulator, alternator conversion, smaller pulley with timing marks, blue coil, hi-po distributor,ANS exhaust (4-chrome tips), front disc brakes, lowered front spindles, rear torrsion bars are lowered with coil spring over rear shocks, 7/8" front anti-sway bar, offset chrome wheels with body color wire baskets (6"x15), all four fenders are fiberglass and are widened, fiberglass trunk lid, fiberglass engine cover with whale-tail spoiler, external body chrome stripped with holes welded closed prior to painting, ligherter bumpers with turn signals in front bumper, Bosch front driving lights, one-piece door windows with lighter early style doors installed. early style tail lamps, Scat front seats, small diameter steering wheel, full instruments in dash, replaced dash, CD player with 4 speakers, short shift conversion, roller pedal accelerator, gray velour door and rear side panels, Billet window crank handles, new headlining, heated rear window.  Painted in 1990 with Ford Thunderbird red paint which is now very faded and begging to peel from the trunk lid.  Heat channels and one side of floor replaced at time of rebuild.  New suspension bushings at that time.

After all this work, I drove the car occasionally for ten years, then sporadically, then I took a new job 100 miles away and have not had time to ever return to it.  I am now approaching 60 years of age and know the car should be passed to someone younger than me.

I have not started this car in at least 6 years.  When it was driven regularly, it needed new spark plugs each Spring and it got an oil change at that time (I remember 6-8 quarts of oil with the cooler and the extended sump).  The car is lighter than stock and more powerful.  It does burn rubber if you feel the need,,,, more importantly, it handles like a Go-Cart.

I checked last Sunday and I could turn the pulley by hand up to the point where compression stopped me,,,,,,,, so the engine is not frozen, and the valves move on the pistons coming up for compression.  I did not have a spare battery and did not try to start it.  The car cover disintegrated a couple of years ago, and the sun has faded the paint.  It needs a new paint job.  Some glass weatherstripping is drying out (not enough to be worrisome unless the car was being displayed at a show.  The tires have less than 500 miles on them, but have sat for years.  I could not find any rust on the undercarriage, but admit to not laying on my back on the driveway to look closely.  I did shoot some digital images of the undercarriage.  Looks like undercoating is peeling is some areas.  Paint is blistering in one spot on the bottom edge of the driver's door.

I think it needs a new paint job, a battery and a full tune-up (possible check valve settings since it sat for so long).  Tires may be drying out.  I did not test brakes.

Please ask question or ask for images you may need.  I am only at the house where the car is at during weekends, though.  Weekdays I am 100 miles north.

2015 Volkswagen GTI [w/video]

The 911 Of Hot Hatches Takes The Compact Game To New Levels
North American car buyers get a bit of a slap in the face when it comes to delivery schedules for new the Volkswagen Golf and pumped-up GTI models. We'll just repeat the old chestnut: It's worth the wait... even though it still stinks. This time around, Western Europe is taking deliveries of the new Golf as we speak, and GTI deliveries start between May and July. North America doesn't get the Mk7 Golf or GTI until about July of 2014.
So we approached our first drive of the new GTI with this chip on our shoulder: "You're making us wait? Well, then at least give us the exact car we'll be able to buy. No compromises, mein freund." And so it was that we extracted nearly all of our drive impressions from behind the wheel of what, for the United States, will technically be a model year 2015 two-door Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance with the standard six-speed manual.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.

Chrysler and Fiat offering $1,000 rebates to VW owners as Marchionne gets tough

Mon, 10 Dec 2012

The throw-down between Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne and Volkswagen has heated up in earnest. According to Bloomberg, Fiat and Chrysler are now offering current Volkswagen owners in the US $1,000 rebates to trade in their ride. It's the latest in a series of shots Marchionne has taken at his German rival. As you may recall, the Fiat executive entered into a spat with Volkwagen board chairman Ferdinand Piëch and CEO Martin Winterkorn in October after the duo called for Marchionne's resignation from presidency of the European Automotive Manufacturers Association (AECA). At the time, the Volkswagen executives were quoted as saying Fiat would not survive the European economic downturn.
In response, Marchionne called the German executives "reprehensible," and accused Volkswagen of using a pricing strategy that has created created a "bloodbath" in the EU. Volkswagen has taken to steep discounting to carve out ever-larger slices of market share in Europe, but the company has a much smaller foothold in the US. Marchionne may be trying to hit Volkswagen where the manufacturer is weakest with the new Fiat new incentive program.
Late last week, the Fiat executive was voted to a second term as ACEA president.
