It is bent on the driver's side and a original quality replacement should run around $220 (http://www.mamotorworkstv.com/vw/product/front-bumper-353116/)Starter appears to have a non-contact point in it. On occasion (~ once every two weeks) the engine will not engage when the ignition is turned. A simple roll start or crossing of the starter's contacts resolves the issue right away, but the vehicle could use a new starter.Turn signal does not de-activate. Could use a new switch or spring. Was never a concern of mine, I simply turned it off myself.Emergency flashers do not work (my mechanic said this is likely just a switch that needs replaced).Windshield washer needs new tank (doesn't seal to hold pressure - not pressurized by spare tire, has a pressure valve right on the tank)."

DETAILS:

1969 Volkswagen Beetle

61,000 Miles on Odometer (not original)

AM/FM CD Player with AUX hookup installed. AUX wiring is currently run into the glovebox and available throughout front/rear seat of car.

Bright Red Paint (not original) - Great older paint job in decent condition with a few chips here & there. Car was originally painted green (which can be seen deep in engine compartment and in areas under hood.

Body has very little rust anywhere. A few paint chips or scratches show a little rust, but only surface. Floor pans are surface rusted but have no holes (aside from one drilled through to resolve the infamous passenger side leak from driving while its raining). Some body rust is visible deep in the engine compartment (where the fenders meet the body & firewall), but has not progressed while I've owned the car and appears to have been sealed off when the vehicle was painted.

Tan Cloth Interior (not original) - Seats and headliner are in great condition, carpet is in decent shape but could use an update.

Engine starts right away and runs well. It could use timing and a tune-up, but has been my daily driver for the last 10 months (including regular 60 miles trips between Cleveland and Sandusky area). I have not had a single breakdown and the car has always started without a problem.

All four tires are new within the last 10 months.

New heater boxes were installed in January. The interior controls have not been hooked up. My mechanic open's the boxes in the late fall and closes them in the spring. Having driven several old VW's, I am amazed at how much heat this thing puts out. If its warmer than 15° outside you'll need to crack a window!

KNOWN PROBLEMS:

Front bumper was clipped in a parking lot (and is fairly rusted). It is bent on the driver's side and a original quality replacement should run around $220 (http://www.mamotorworkstv.com/vw/product/front-bumper-353116/)

Starter appears to have a non-contact point in it. On occasion (~ once every two weeks) the engine will not engage when the ignition is turned. A simple roll start or crossing of the starter's contacts resolves the issue right away, but the vehicle could use a new starter.

Turn signal does not de-activate. Could use a new switch or spring. Was never a concern of mine, I simply turned it off myself.

Emergency flashers do not work (my mechanic said this is likely just a switch that needs replaced).

Windshield washer needs new tank (doesn't seal to hold pressure - not pressurized by spare tire, has a pressure valve right on the tank).

REASON FOR SELLING:

I am only selling this car as we are making an effort to be a one car household, and this one is the least practical to meet all of our needs. The car has been dependable year-round for me and is a blast to drive.

I am open to offers, so please feel free to email with any additional questions you may have.

Volkswagen looking to acquire Proton, Lotus?

Thu, 26 Jul 2012

Let's say you're an automaker bent on world domination looking to grow your sales. That's going to have you looking at Asian markets, because that's where some of the biggest growth has been, and that's exactly what Volkswagen is doing as it considers making another run at Malaysia's Proton.
Reuters reports that Volkswagen is interested in at least a partial stake, if not a controlling interest in Lotus-parent Proton as a way to continue a production presence in the region without having to build its own factory.
Volkswagen already builds the Passat in a DRB-HICOM facility in Pekan, Malaysia, and plans are in place to build the Jetta and Polo there, as well. With both southeast Asia and its relationship with Proton figuring so importantly in Volkswagen's plans for expansion, buying into Proton can help ensure stability. Volkswagen is being tight-lipped about the whole idea, but CEO Martin Winterkorn did recently say, "it's our clear goal to continue the successful (expansion) course of past years with great dynamics and stability," which sounds an awful lot like deals are on the table to smooth the path to further growth.

Volkswagen e-Co-Motion concept poised for delivery to Geneva

Sat, 02 Mar 2013

With Nissan getting ready to launch the e-NV200, it appears Volkswagen is looking to go after the same zero-emission commercial vehicle market with the all-electric 2013 e-Co-Motion Concept. Debuting next week at the Geneva Motor Show, the e-Co-Motion Concept might be small in size, but VW says it has cargo and payload capacities that should be perfect for small businesses.
Measuring 179 inches long, 75 inches wide and 77 inches tall, the e-Co-Motion Concept has about the same footprint as the current Golf, and it has a cargo capacity of 162 cubic feet and a maximum payload of more than 1,700 pounds. There isn't too much information on the e-Co-Motion just yet - such as what electric components and platform are used - but the press release posted below states while the concept is shown as a cargo van, future body styles could include a passenger wagon or a refrigerated box van.

VW investigating Golf water leak discovered by car magazine

Sat, 07 Sep 2013

Volkswagen is in a spat with German magazine Auto Bild over claims that its new, seventh-generation Golf may already need a recall. The German weekly reports that new Golfs can leak water into front-passenger footwells due to a faulty drainage tube in their air conditioning systems.
And while the fix itself doesn't sound too terrible, because Volkswagen bases so many cars off the same platform as the Golf, Auto Bild is claiming that 300,000 models could be affected, including the Audi A3 and Seat Leon. That's a very bold claim. For its part, VW is vehemently denying that number, according to Reuters, saying it's aware of the problem and claiming only 46 Golfs need fixing. In addition, it denies that any Audi or Seat models are affected by the issue.
Either way, regardless of how pervasive this leak issue is, North American buyers should rest easy knowing that the problems ought to get fixed by the time the Mk VII Golf finaly reaches our dealerships.
