1982 Toyota Tercel Std Sedan 2-door 1.5l on 2040-cars

Oh, What a Feeling, Indeed! For sale, a bright yellow 1982 Toyota Tercel babe magnet. I love this car, but my wife has become jealous of the admiring ladies that chase me all over town whenever I drive it. Also, she doesn't like that I keep it pampered in a warm garage, while our other cars are left out on the driveway, completely exposed to the elements. It is in pretty good condition, but it is 31 years old, with the little dings and scratches you'd expect on a daily driver of that age. The interior is all original, complete with the original radio with push-button presets, and factory option tape player. The rear seats are in good shape, the front seats have seat covers on them. The dash has a dash cover on it, but underneath it's actually in pretty good shape considering the age--little hairline cracks all over, but no giant gashes or anything. A/C works well. Earlier this year I had it repainted (same color--the original yellow), and it looks great. The tires are all brand new--about 200 miles on them. It is registered and driveable.

The bad--as mentioned, the carb runs pretty rich and needs to be adjusted. I had it compression tested about 3,000 miles ago, and compression is still very good. The (5 speed) transmission feels like it needs a synchro replaced. Basically, it's tough to downshift into first unless the car is at a complete stop, or until you get the hang of how to do it right. The portion of the trunk hinge that keeps the trunk open is broken. I've modified it so that it will stay open, but you must pull down the hinge with pliers in order to close it. Finally, the heater only blows lukewarm. There is no blockage anywhere, and the heater core is good--a fellow Tercel enthusiast tells me it is just a matter of adjusting the little plastic lever for the heater control under the dash. All that said, it runs well enough for regular commuting.

For those of you out there who appreciate the functional simplicity of early 1980's Japanese econobox engineering (let's see, there's my two brothers . . . anyone else?), the Tercel--particularly the first generation--is a great car, extremely reliable, and surprisingly fun to drive. They are also increasingly difficult to find, especially in good, original condition like this one. Enjoy!

Toyota launches Pixis Space; first kei cars are Daihatsus in drag

Fri, 09 Sep 2011

Toyota has announced that it will unveil its first-ever kei car to be sold under its recently launched Pixis sub-brand. The vehicle, called the Pixis Space, will make its official debut in late September. Based on the Daihatsu Move Conte, the Pixis Space will be sold at Toyota dealerships through what the automakers calls "Pixis stations." Yes, seriously.
After Toyota's version of the Daihatsu Move Conte makes its debut, the Japanese automaker will launch a Pixis-badged Daihatsu Hijet truck and microvan in December. By the end of 2012, Toyota says it will launch a Pixis version of the upcoming Daihatsu e:S - a vehicle that returns 70.6 miles per gallon (U.S.) as measured under Japan's JC08 test cycle.
In case you weren't aware, Daihatsu - Japan's oldest manufacturer of automobiles - operates under the control of Toyota. In other words, these Pixis machines are simply badge engineering at the kei level.

Watch this video diary of a 900-hp Toyota Supra build

Sat, 08 Jun 2013

If you've ever looked at a car with nearly 1,000 horsepower and wondered why anyone needs that amount of thrust, you may want to take a look at the video below. In it, one gentleman details his descent into Toyota Supra madness, starting with a pristine factory example and stumbling down the rabbit hole of modification. What makes this particular clip interesting is just how honest the owner is as he explains the evolution of his car. He doesn't just prattle off a list of parts like he's reading the menu at an IHOP.
Instead, he painstakingly pulls us through the car's growth, detailing each iteration and what pushed him to the next stage of the build every time. From this point of view, it looks less like someone walked into a shop and lit a massive stack of $100 bills on fire and more like a quasi-logical progression of events. Or at least it does to me. You can check out the build in the video below, complete with plenty of Fast and the Furious references and racing. Win, win, win.

Union to launch Toyota organization drive in Canada

Sun, 12 Jan 2014

Toyota may be heading toward some labor issues in the Great White North, as employees at a pair of Canadian Toyota factories may be set for a certification vote. The Unifor union, which was the result of a merger last year between the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union, will be holding the vote.
Over 40 percent of the employees at the Woodstock and Cambridge, Ontario factories have signed union cards, cresting the minimum percentage required to instigate a legal certification vote, according to Reuters. The Woodstock factory is responsible for RAV4 production, while Cambridge builds the Lexus RX350 and RX450h, as well as the Toyota Corolla. The two factories employ nearly 7,000 people.
It's unclear when the union will hold a certification vote at the two factories, but what is rather clear are the worker complaints. Employees are concerned about workers being hired on temporary contracts which lack the benefits of full employment, John Aman, head of organizing for Unifor, told Reuters.
