Toyota break down
The variants for the Tacoma are long, and they start with a regular-cab pickup with a 2.7-liter 159-hp, 4-cylinder engine. The X-Runner and Pre-Runner editions have a more powerful 4.0-liter V6 making 236 hp. All the Tacomas are available in rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, and most have a 5-speed manual transmission standard. A 4-speed automatic is available, and a 6-speed manual is standard in the X-Runner.Body styles include the regular cab, access cab (extended cab) and double cab (crew cab with four doors). A 6-foot bed with liner is standard, but a shorter 5-foot bed can be had with the double cab style. No matter which configuration you choose, the Tacoma has a standard towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. Some configurations, such as the double cab with the V6 engine installed, are good for a maximum of 6,500 pounds of towing. All the Tacomas come with the Star Safety System, which includes stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, and brake assist. They also have front driver and passenger air bags, seat-mounted and curtain air bags, active headrests and tire-pressure monitoring. The base-level regular cab has little in the way of amenities, but it does include a tilt steering wheel and CD player with MP3 playback. The access cab adds power windows and locks, plus a few extra speakers in the cab. The double cab has features such as rear seat heater ducts and a 60/40 split rear bench. The X-runner is available only as an access cab, but it has a sliding rear window and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Pre-runner has exterior touches to add an off-road appearance -- even with 2-wheel drive. The door handles and mirrors are black, the grille is distinctive, black over-fenders are added and a skid plate is installed. These are only a few of the packages and options available for the Tacoma. With two engines, two drive configurations, two beds and the X-Runner and Pre-Runner versions, the Tacoma's configuration possibilites are practically endless.

2014 Toyota Corolla priced from $16,800*

Tue, 27 Aug 2013

We'll be publishing our First Drive of the 2014 Toyota Corolla later today, but right now, we can reveal that the eleventh-generation compact will be priced from $16,800 when it hits dealerships this fall (*not including a $810 destination charge).
Four trim levels will be offered, and that sub-$17,000 price point reflects the base L grade with a six-speed manual transmission. Adding the four-speed automatic (yep) brings that price up to $17,400, which gets you the usual features standard on this class of car, including Bluetooth connectivity, eight airbags and - a first for this price point - LED headlamps.
From there, the LE trim ($18,300) adds a backup camera, cruise control, keyless entry, Entune audio (including a 6.1-inch touchscreen) and a brand-new continuously variable transmission replacing the four-speed auto. There's even an Eco version of the LE trim that uses a different engine tune to provide fuel economy of up to 42 miles per gallon on the highway.

Toyota develops new pre-collision system with steering assist

Sun, 13 Oct 2013

A number of automakers are working on developing fully autonomous cars, but it looks like the groundwork for such technologies will likely show up first as semi-autonomous systems for both safety and convenience. Following recent announcements from Nissan and Ford in this area, Toyota has now released information for some of its advanced semi-autonomous technologies that could be offered in production cars over the next few years.
On the safety front, Toyota's new pre-collision system with pedestrian-avoidance steering assist is aimed at protecting the folks who aren't in the car. This system combines visual and audible alerts with automatic brake assist and automatic steering. If warnings don't get the driver to slow down, the brake assist kicks in if a collision is very likely, but if that is still not able to avoid the impending collision (and if there is enough room to do so), the car can automatically steer itself around the pedestrian. This sounds most beneficial for last-second dangers such as a person accidently stepping out into the road in front of a car. Toyota hopes to have this technology available to customers by 2015.
The Japanese automaker is also testing a suite of technologies called Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA). The key part of this is a new adaptive cruise control system that uses vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications rather than a radar-based system. This cooperative-adaptive cruise control allows vehicles to communicate their acceleration and deceleration data with other cars, which Toyota says this helps to improve fuel efficiency and traffic flow. Also a part of AHDA is the Lane Trace Control feature, which sounds like a next-gen lane keep assist. This system uses cameras, radar and a computer to keep the vehicle in a "smooth driving line" by being able to change steering angle, engine torque and braking force. Toyota says this technology could be in place by the "mid-2010s."

2014 Toyota Tundra gets five grades priced from $25,920*

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Toyota has announced pricing details for its refreshed 2014 Tundra, with the fullsize pickup offered in five grades. Naturally, that doesn't include the buyer's choice of three cab styles, the option of two- or four-wheel drive, and a choice of a 4.0-liter V6 base engine or 4.6-liter and 5.7-liter V8s.
The base SR starts at $25,920, while the volume SR5 model starts at $29,465. Toyota notes that all SR5s ordered with the big V8 hold the line on pricing from 2013 while including a further $650 in standard equipment. The first of three high-end trims, Limited, starts at $36,940, while the Platinum and 1794 Edition both start at $44,270, with all prices subject to a $995 destination charge. Also noteworthy on the cost-savings front, Limited CrewMax 4x4 models are priced $2,000 less than their 2013 equivalents, (4x2 buyers save $1,900).
As is typical for a model as as customizable as a pickup, Toyota's pricing structure is far from simple. Adding the 5.7-liter V8 at one trim level can cost several hundred dollars more or less than another trim level - the same goes for adding four-wheel drive. So, rather than break out the Enigma Machine to try and decipher what options cost what on which trim, we've just rolled the whole pricing chart in. Scroll down for a look, including Toyota's full press release, and then check out our recent First Drive feature of the truck.
