For sale: a 1987 Toyota MR2 T-bar, manual 2-seater sports car.

Mileage: 88,xxx.

Location: Palo Alto, CA.

Condition: very good.

The car is in great working order - it has a few small cosmetic defects, but it runs beautifully, and just passed it’s CA smog test.  It’s a fun, sporty car to drive - it clings to the road like a limpet.  Gets good gas mileage (EPA-rated as 26 city/32 highway).  I’ve owned this since it was new, and it’s served me well, but I’m buying a new convertible, so sadly I need to let it go.

Clean title; one non-smoking owner. VIN JT2AW15J4H01200754.  Classic first-generation MR2 model AW11.

EXTERIOR

- Original “super white” paint in great condition except for some small dents in the back left panel resulting from an interaction with a hedge.

- Original rear spoiler and T-bar roof (including storage bags).

- No sign of rust. No collisions/accidents - apart from that hedge.

- Original spare tire, that has never been used.

- Power windows, door locks, mirrors.

- Aluminum alloy wheels.

INTERIOR

- Original blue cloth interior with “performance interior package” and floor mats. Still in great condition.

- New Toyota shift boot and trim.

- New Sony CD/radio.

- There’s a couple of places where sunlight caused the plastic to get brittle, and suffer some cosmetic damage: (1) the cover for the mechanisms in the T-bar tops; (2) two small slits on the dash; (3) the surround or the rightmost dash air vent.  None impair functionality.

- Steering wheel has a leather cover added; the original underneath is a little rough.

- Cruise control.

- A/C and heater work great.

ENGINE

- Stock original engine: 4cyl 1.6L 16 valve dual overhead twin cam; not turbo-charged.

- 5 speed manual engine

No check engine lights! Its a healthy engine with no issues.

- Newish battery; recently-replaced brake master cylinder.

- Regular maintenance and service carried out as per Toyota guidelines. I have all the maintenance records if you want them.

EXTRAS (all included)

- a custom fitted car cover

- Toyota maintenance and electrical manuals

- tire chains (almost never used).

Toyota mulling more Tundra, Tacoma capacity in TX

Tue, 17 Dec 2013

Toyota may be expanding its pickup truck production at its San Antonio, TX factory following calls from dealers for more Tacoma and Tundra models, according to a new report from Automotive News.
The San Antonio plant is currently able to produce 250,000 trucks on two shifts with overtime, while a secondary facility in Tijuana, Mexico can build an extra 50,000 Tacomas. Despite this capacity, and the fact that Tundra is a slow seller relative to the full-size trucks from Ford, Ram and Chevrolet/GMC (not to mention the Tacoma being part of a segment with diminishing sales), Toyota franchisees apparently can't get enough of the trucks.
"Dealers are telling us they could sell more Tacomas and Tundras," said Bill Fay, the general manager of the Toyota Division. "We are evaluating our footprint and capacity." According to AN, Toyota has moved over 248,000 trucks through November.

Toyota TRD Pro lineup coming next week

Thu, 30 Jan 2014

A mysterious Toyota commercial recently popped up on YouTube teasing a new TRD Pro lineup for the Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner, and now we're getting our first official word straight from the automaker on the matter. Courtesy of its Facebook page, Toyota is promising that the TRD Pro models will be introduced on February 6th, ready to "conquer the great outdoors."
This date just so happens to mark the first day of the always-truck-friendly Chicago Auto Show, so while Toyota isn't saying as much, we're almost certain the trucks will show up next week in the Windy City. It's not clear what sort of upgrades TRD Pro brings, but it definitely includes black wheels and a tweaked front end featuring a thick, single-bar grille and bold lettering in place of the stylized Toyota logo (shown above on the Tundra).
Scroll down to see the video, and head over to Toyota's Facebook page to see a teaser image of the 4Runner TRD Pro.

Toyota nudges US sales projections up to 2.25M

Tue, 20 Aug 2013

Toyota has raised its expectations for 2013's US sales for the third time since the end of 2012. The new target rests at 2.25 million units, when sales of Toyota, Lexus and Scion are taken as one. Subtracting Lexus, Toyota is still expecting to move over two million vehicles in the US by the end of 2013.
According to a report from Automotive News, the sales expectations came from Bob Carter, senior VP of automotive operations for Toyota USA, during a dealers during a meeting in Atlanta. The heightened expectations go along with Toyota's predictions for the US market as a whole, which it expects to grow to 15.5 million units by the end of 2013.
Besides an overall, national uptick in new vehicle sales, Toyota is also expecting a big push as it puts the next-generation Corolla to market during the second half of this year, along with the Tundra pickup truck. Meanwhile, dealers were shown images of a refreshed Camry, set to arrive in 2015, and reported that it's "more than a nip and a tuck," according to the AN report.
