Bought this truck a year ago but never drive it - maybe have driven 1,000 miles. I had anticipated keeping this truck for the longhaul , but need room in my garage. Automotive Appraisals & Pre-Buy Inspections LLC UBI# 602991237 6392 Polaris CT West Richland, WA 99352 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 VIN# FJ40274852 Appraisal requested by Scott Fleming Owner is Hal Young Feb 24, 2011 This Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 is a brand new completed mint restoration. The work has been completed in a professional Land Cruiser restoration shop. This vehicle is built to better than OE standard, but to OE specification. There are only test and tune miles on this truck, I could not find a single imperfection or blemish. On the typical car show judging scale of best being 100 never driven, trailered only, I would give this truck a strong 97-98. Miles show 46,244 which I believe to be original. The mileage is noted exempt due to age and WA title requirements, but from the pristine nature of this vehicle prior to restoration, I believe the odometer is correct. Every mechanical component of this vehicle is new or refurbished. Most of the new parts are OE Toyota, aftermarket parts only used when OE were not available. This is a true frame-off nut and bolt restoration. Every nut and bolt are new stainless. Toyota FJ40’s came with a crude single stage paint from the factory. This FJ40 has a perfect base coat clear coat paint with 6 coats base, each coat wet sanded, and 4 coats of clear, each coat wet sanded. This is the type of paint job you would typically see in a show perfect classic muscle car. The undercarriage is coated with POR-15. The paint and rust prevention given to this truck exceeds factory specs, and will ensure this vehicle remains rust free for many years to come. Overall, this restoration is the finest I’ve seen on a 4x4 truck, it is absolutely spectacular. I would rate this FJ40 in the top 1% known in the world. I estimate this FJ40 to have an actual cash value of $50,000-60,000 in the present market. Replacement value of a ground up rebuild would be in the $90,000-100,000 range. My opinion for this range relies on research with Vintage Off Road, TLC, and ICON whom are the known authority for these vehicles as well as recent eBay sold auctions. I based this value on the three restoration shops listed above from their posted vehicles for sale on their websites, as well as their listed costs for restoration work.

Vice chronicles Okinawa's illegal street racing scene

Mon, 10 Mar 2014

We all know that street racing is dangerous, and that motorsports are best left on the track or drag strip. However, that doesn't mean that there still isn't some outlaw allure among enthusiasts of racing on public roads. In this video, Vice Japan profiles Eikichi Nagayoshi of Japan's island of Okinawa. He is a used car dealer by day and an illegal racer by night.
Nagayoshi has a deep love for his highly customized Toyota Aristo (better known to us as a first-generation Lexus GS) that he claims produces over 1,000 horsepower and has hit 205 miles per hour. He races his car both on drag strips and in drifting competitions, but says that he often has to ship the car to mainland Japan to compete. In the absence of those opportunities, he sometimes gathers friends and takes the racing to the public roads. While we're not down with street racing, this Vice video is an intriguing personality piece, as well as a look into Japan's fabled underground racing scene. Scroll down to check out the video, but make sure you have the "CC" button clicked, because several portions are subtitled.

Toyota GT86 convertible could debut in March

Tue, 27 Nov 2012

The dates are lining up, now we wait to see how the badges align. Just before the Toyota GT 86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ line-up was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, there was a report that Subaru was considering a convertible while Toyota wouldn't even comment on it. That got swapped around when earlier this year the chief engineer on Toyota's side said a convertible was coming, and then a Scion FR-S droptop was confirmed for early 2014.
Autocar now reports that the Toyota GT 86 convertible will make its first appearance at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March. In a car whose specs like weight, packaging, horsepower and center of gravity were all tightly controlled to get the most from the least, the changes necessitated by chopping the roof could make this a very different car. It's said to employ a fabric roof to keep a "small" weight gain check, and the suspension will be softened to work more harmoniously with the decreased body stiffness. And somewhere in all that the back seat and trunk space will need to take a hit.
In other news, Autocar says the hi-po GT 86 with some kind of capacitor system instead of batteries is being worked on for 2015.

Toyota MR2 shows why we still love the 1990s

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

Was there a better time for Japanese performance than the 1980s and 1990s? It seems like looking back, Japan was on a roll, producing cars that were affordable, economical, reliable, fast and lightweight. And while all the attention is - thanks to a certain film series - focused on cars like Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7, there is a lesser-known model that's establishing its own enduring legacy without the help of Paul Walker and Vin Diesel.
The MR2, affectionately known as the "Mister Two" to fanboys, first arrived in 1984 as a lightweight, mid-engined sports car that proceeded to eat the lunch of the Pontiac Fiero in terms of performance. That car was replaced in 1989 with the more familiar, rounded-out MR2, which is the subject of this latest video from the team at Petrolicious.
The video takes a look at a group of MR2 drivers, and attempts to explain what it is about the car that is destined to make it a future classic. Scroll down to see Petrolicious examine the MR2 Connection.
