Model Overview
The 2006 Highlander is based on the best-selling Toyota Camry platform. This unibody chassis means the Highlander rides considerably better than those truck-based SUVs. It's not as rugged for off-road use, but better suited to family duty. While you could opt for the 155-horsepower, 2.4L four-cylinder, most drivers will prefer the peppy 215-horsepower, 3.3L V6.The EPA estimates fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with the four-cylinder and front-wheel drive, which is near the top of the segment. The Highlander Hybrid uses a 3.3L V6 in combination with three motor generators to drive the front or all four wheels. This translates to fuel economy of an impressive 32 in the city and 27 on the highway. The Hybrid is a unique driving experience. When you come to a stop, the gas motor shuts off. Step on the gas gently and you move forward on electric power only. The quietness of this technology will astound you. Press harder on the accelerator and the gas engine comes back to life. The combination of the gas and electric motors produces excellent acceleration. We did get have a chance to drive in some heavy rainstorms, and the all-wheel-drive handled the sloppy conditions with quiet competence. The standard five-speed automatic transmission (four-speed automatic for the four-cylinder) helped to keep the power flowing smoothly. Inside the driver sees a familiar, well designed instrument and control panel. The Highlander is available in both two- and four-wheel drive across five trim levels: the $24,880 base, the $28,115 Sport, the $30,810 Limited, the $32,490 Hybrid, and the $34,610 Hybrid Limited. Even the base model comes every well equipped. It includes a roof rack, air conditioning, an AM/FM/cassette/CD audio system, power windows, power doors, and power mirrors. The Sport model adds an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, an adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and seventeen?inch alloy wheels. The Limited is the model for those folks who like the full-luxury treatment in their SUV. The air conditioning is upgraded to dual-zone automatic climate control, the passenger seat gets a four-way power adjuster, and wood grain trim adorns the dashboard. Notable options include quite a few extra value packages that differ in all five models. A third row seat is a stand alone option, as is the rear seat DVD entertainment system that includes two wireless headphones.

2015 Toyota Camry priced at $22,970*, Hybrid at $26,790*

Tue, 02 Sep 2014

We last saw the heavily revised 2015 Toyota Camry at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. Now, it's finally time for the best-selling car in the US to hit the roads in late September, and Toyota is announcing how much the updated model actually costs.
The basic Camry LE rings up for $22,970 (*not including a $825 delivery, processing and handling fee). That's up slightly from the base price of $22,425 for the 2014.5 LE, but the updated sedan has some 2,000 new parts, while also being 1.8 inches longer and boasting a 0.4-inch wider track. The rest of the trim levels include the SE for $23,840, sporty new XSE for $26,150 and XLE at $26,150. Opting for the V6 is the XSE and XLE bumps pricing to $31,370.
Separately, the Camry Hybrid gets its own LE, SE and XLE trims. The LE starts at $26,790 with a standard, power driver's seat and 4.2-inch information display. The SE for $27,995 gets an improved interior and the XLE at $29,980 has leather, heated front seats, LED running lights and more.

Toyota sudden acceleration class action may cover 22 million owners

Thu, 16 May 2013

A total of 22.6 million current and former Toyota owners have been sent notices that they may be eligible to receive compensation from the automaker for damages related to the unintended acceleration fiasco that has dominated headlines in 2009 and 2010. The total payout may be as high as $1.63 billion, according to The Detroit News.
Steve Berman, a lawyer for the owners, calls the potential deal "a landmark, if not a record, settlement in automobile defects class action litigation in the United States." Still, there's some debate about whether or not Toyota's proposed settlement is fair, as it includes $30 million for safety research and driver education programs - in other words, Toyota seems to be suggesting that drivers need more education on how to drive their correctly working and fully functional vehicles. For those keeping track, Toyota would also be paying lawyer fees of $200 million.
A US District Judge in California is scheduled to hold a so-called "fairness hearing" on June 14 that could decide the fate of this particular settlement. Further courtroom wrangling will be required to hash out any wrongful death suits levied against Toyota stemming from unintended acceleration claims, as those are not part of this class-action suit.

Toyota Camry could lose No. 1 sedan spot next year [w/video]

Fri, 27 Sep 2013

Eleven months after Toyota claimed the 2012 sales crown a couple of months early thanks to the Camry, the headlines this year have been quite a bit different to last. Even though the Camry remains the best selling car so far in 2013 and its volume has increased year-on-year, it has lost market share due to the 20-percent sales explosion in the midsize segment. That means people are buying more of the competitor offerings like the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion - the Altima, in fact, outsold the Camry by 100 units in March.
In July it was reported that Toyota was upping Camry incentives and fleet sales to keep its lead and that dealer inventory was climbing as, again, competitors got better at fighting the champion. In August Ford doubled down on production of the Fusion, adding a line in Flat Rock, MI to keep up with demand.
Bloomberg has a report looking at the numbers behind the Camry's dominance, as well as what appears to be a recorded group interview with Toyota USA CEO Jim Lentz, and wonders aloud whether the Camry will be able to hold its top spot in 2014. Barring catastrophe it has this year locked up, being more than 30,000 sales ahead of the next-best seller as of the end of August, but it has done so with higher incentives and lower transaction prices than its competitors. According to Strategic Vision the Camry's consideration rate among consumers has also declined by a percentage point, while the consideration rate for the Accord and Fusion has increased by one point and two points, respectively.
