- The really great thing about this car is that it only has 82,392 miles at the exact moment I am typing this. Mechanically, this car is in excellent condition. The only non-routine repair I have ever needed on this car was to replace the front struts, thanks to a huge Chicago pothole. This occurred in August of 2011. I have documentation for this and most of the last few routine repairs. I can provide copies or possibly a PDF scan. I have diligently kept up with all routine maintenance throughout the life of this car:
- The car is working on its second battery, which is about 5 years old. I am very conscientious about having all electrical components--a/c, radio, etc--turned off when I cut power to the engine. I have not had any issues with the battery. I cannot find documentation for this one, but I can tell you that I bought the battery at a place that sells industrial batteries, so it is a quality battery.
- The car is working on its third set of front brakes replaced in August of 2011, and its second set of rear brakes replaced in 2008. The brakes are still very strong and don't require a lot of pressure on the brake pedal.
- The car is working on its second set of tires, which were replaced in November of 2009. They've got maybe 12,000 miles on them. The tread is over 50%, and the tires still perform well in the rain.
- Oil has been replaced regularly about 3 times per year. The last tune-up was around 75,000 miles. The only thing needed outside of transmission flush, etc, was a new serpentine belt, which is pretty standard. (I can't find documentation for this one either.)
- The a/c and heating are both still excellent. Never any problems and still work like brand new.
- This car has passed all safety and emissions tests each year.
- There are a few places with rust. This occurs on the front hood, trunk, and along the driver-side back bumper area. None of the metal has been eaten through, and none of the rust stains are larger than that of a quarter. (See pictures.)
- The car has its fair share of dings. The largest is on the driver-side rear end, right next to the bumper. There are a couple of other minor dings throughout the body of the car. Mostly from door bumps and a few on the roof from a hail storm.
- There are a couple of stains on the interior cloth seats. Mostly from accidentally wiping oily hands on the seat after working on the car, and also from foolishly placing a bag of greasy food directly on the seat. Durrr... These stains aren't recent, so there isn't a chance that they'll stain your clothes or anything like that.
- The cigarette lighter is broken. It's jammed and won't come out.
- The CD player can be wonky at times. It is finnicky and will only play some CDs--haven't figured out the rhyme or reason. The am/fm radio on the CD player works fine.
Please contact me with any queries.

Popular Science magazine's Best Of What's New 2012 all ate up with cars
Tue, 20 Nov 2012Popular Science has named the winners in its Best of What's New awards, the victors coming in the categories of aerospace, automotive, engineering, entertainment, gadgets, green, hardware, health, home, recreation, security and software. The automotive category did not go wanting for lauded advancements:
Tesla Model S: the Grand Award winner for being "the standard by which all future electric vehicles will be measured."
BMW 328i: it's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gets called out for being more powerful and frugal than the six-cylinder it replaces.
Toyota Prius sets a different kind of Nurburgring lap record [w/video]
Tue, 15 Jul 2014Scroll down the leaderboards of Nürburgring lap times and you'll see mostly racing cars, supercars and sports cars. Delve deep enough and you'll eventually get to hatchbacks and sedans, albeit the most performance-focused of their kind. But a hybrid? Sure, the Porsche 918 Spyder posted the top time for a street-legal series production car, and it's technically a hybrid, but we're talking about another kind of hybrid here. We're talking about a Toyota Prius.
That's right: the Prius just set a lap record around the Nordschleife. But it wasn't for the lap time. In fact, miles per hour barely factored in (except for staying above the minimum 37-mph average speed mandated on the vaunted racing circuit). No, this was about miles per gallon.
Toyota took one of its Prius Plug-In hybrids to the Nürburgring, topped up the battery, put on a set of low-rolling-resistance tires and put automotive journalist Joe Clifford behind the wheel with a mandate to use as little fuel as possible. After one second shy of 21 minutes, the Prius completed its lap having used just five tablespoons of fuel.
Legal approach in $1.2 billion Toyota settlement could impact handling of GM recall cases
Wed, 26 Mar 2014In the past, if an automaker did something wrong, they were usually prosecuted by the US government through something called the TREAD Act. Short for Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation Act, it basically requires automakers to report recalls in other countries, along with any and all serious injuries or deaths, to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Failing to report or attempting to conceal anything when there's been a death or serious injury constitutes a criminal liability. The idea is that this setup puts the onus on manufacturers to keep NHTSA apprised of safety related issues before they become a problem in the US, thereby allowing the regulator to better protect consumers.
In theory, it sounds like a relatively airtight set of rules for dealing with misbehaving automakers. That didn't stop the US Department of Justice from ignoring TREAD in its prosecution of Toyota's handling of the unintended acceleration recall, though. The result of this new approach, which charged Toyota with wire fraud, was a $1.2 billion settlement. Now, the wire-fraud approach could be used for the expected case between the US government and General Motors, based on the statements of Attorney General Eric Holder, who specifically mentioned "similarly situated companies" when discussing Toyota.
