AWESOME 2011 SCION xB 5-SPEED MANUAL-   PRIVATE AUCTION!

We purchased this car new in August of 2010 from James Toyota in Flemington, NJ and it is gorgeous.  It has always been kept in a garage, always filled with name-brand gas, always dealer-serviced and nobody has ever smoked in it.  It has never been in an accident of any kind.  Its exterior color is “Super White” and I can’t find the name that Scion uses for the interior color but you can see from the pics that it is a really snazzy gray with patterned fabric.

If there’s a 2011xB out there in better condition than this one, it’s probably because somebody bought one and hung it on their living-room wall!

You can pick through the equipment list (see the picture of the window sticker) but here are some highlights:

  • 2.4 liter 158 hp engine
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Beautiful, upgraded 17” OZ Racing wheels (made in Italy!), with 235/45 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus Tires- with a good bit of tread left- see pic.  With these wheels, this is about the easiest car to spot in any parking lot!
  • ABS, Stability Control, Traction Control, Tire Pressure Sensors
  • Lot’s of airbags (never needed, thank goodness)
  • $1,900 Kenwood 200 watt DNX 6960 with massive 6.1” touch screen infotainment system including: tuner (obviously), Garmin-based GPS with turn-by-turn voice, cell phone interface (voice dial), ipod interface, CD/DVD player, Sirius/XM capability, steering wheel controls, and backup camera.  We also added a cable for iPhone hookup- see the pic.  Purchased from, and installed by, Sound Auto in Hamilton NJ (they have been around for decades and know what they’re doing with high-end auto).  (If you’re over 60 years old you probably won’t be able to figure this thing out, but then again if you’re looking for a Scion you’re probably not over 60!)
  • Power side mirrors with LED turn signals, halogen headlamps, rear windshield wiper
  • Power windows with auto-down, power locks, cruise control
  • Rear window defogger, rear tinted glass
  • EPA estimates: 22/28 mpg
  • Tilt/telescoping steering wheel- this really makes a difference in fitting the car to YOU!
  • Dealer installed Scion accessories: rear spoiler, auto-dimming mirror, super-cool blue-glowing “Scion” illuminated inserts in the running boards (check these at night!), cargo cover (works great- easy on-and-off), rear bumper “Scion” inlay, front mats
  • 6 speakers (three more than you really need, but whatever- they sound great!)
  • 1/3, 2/3 split rear seat
  • Truly cavernous rear area with the rear seats folded flat.  For example, if you owned a Mini and it had a flat tire, you could just put it in the back and take it home.  Just kidding- but just barely- see the pic!
  • Check out the cool organizer under the rear floor-mat:  really nice for us OCD types!
  • I have all documentation- including manuals (which come in a zippered case- yeah really), the window sticker and all service records and these will be turned over to you
  • I’m pretty fussy about all of my stuff, so this car has been kept up meticulously.
  • I have included pictures of the odometer reading and VIN number
  • genuine donut spare tire

Current mileage (as of 12/24/2013) is 36,325 miles.  VIN # JTLZE4FE6B1122964

Why are we selling it?  All right, this is my wife’s car.  I am a manual transmission fanatic, she wants an automatic.  I love sports cars, she wants a luxury car.  I say this is both; she doesn’t agree.  This is a gorgeous car- I’m gonna miss it; she… not so much.  You get the picture.

Here’s what works on this car: Everything!!

Here’s what you should know is not perfect:

  • Yes, she has scuffed the wheels on the passenger side a few times against curbs.  (My wife says it just looks stupid to leave the car 3 feet from the curb).  It’s pretty minor- see the wheel pic for a typical scuff.
  • Some jerk ran something into the right side of the rear bumper- a shopping cart?  Anyway, there is scuffing and a crease there.  It’s not too noticeable-see the pic.
  • There is some of the usual minor road rash-tiny bits of nicked paint from gravel hitting the front end.  There is less of this than you will find on a typical car of this mileage- and nothing very noticeable.  I’ve tried to show everything in the pics- zoom in for the most detail.

Repairs that have been done on this car:

  • All routine maintenance (every 5,000 miles) was performed by a dealer.
  • That’s it- nothing else of any significance.  We will give you all records with the car.

I am a straight-shooter, and you can bid with confidence.  I have bought and sold on EBay many times over the years (including a couple of cars) and I have never received any negative feedback whatsoever.

I will require cash or a bank cashier’s check and ID at pickup.  I will require a deposit of $1,500 by cash, bank cashier’s check, or Paypal within 48 hours after the auction closes.  You must pay the balance by cash or cashier’s check and pick up the car within 7 days after the auction closes.  (I will accept Paypal for the balance of payment if you add 2.9% to the balance, which is what Paypal charges a seller to accept payment- believe it or not!)

The xB must be picked up in person in Pennington, NJ.  You will have to bring plates to drive it home.

When you come to pick up the car, I will be happy to go with you for a drive on a variety of nearby roads.  If this drive shows up any mechanical problems, I will return your deposit and you will be under no obligation to buy the car.

Other than this caveat, however: If you are the winning bidder on this car, you are legally obligated to follow through on the purchase!

MY RESERVE PRICE IS $13,700 ON THIS CAR.  I AM NOT WILLING TO TAKE ANY LESS.  SURE, IF NOBODY WILL PAY THAT PRICE AFTER ANOTHER LISTING OR TWO, I WILL LOWER THE PRICE, BUT I BELIEVE THIS IS A FAIR PRICE FOR A MANUAL xB IN THIS CONDITION.

If you have any questions, please email me.  Good luck on your bidding.

Carl

Scion exec admits brand has too many dealerships, may contract network

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Despite being conceived by corporate giant Toyota, Scion painstakingly built its reputation on being something of an offbeat, youth-minded brand, working hard to establish individualist, almost hipster-like credentials. So it comes as something of a surprise to hear WardsAuto report that Scion has a whopping 1,000 dealers across America - just 200 fewer than Toyota itself. This, despite a much smaller product portfolio and a sliver of the sales volume.
All those factors may explain why Bill Fay, US group vice president for Toyota, is admitting to the industry publication that its dealer network "might actually go down a little bit." As it stands, the volume end of the equation is probably an even bigger incentive - Scion's sales are way down from the salad days of the mid-2000s, when the brand had fewer models but sold more of them. With the (then) white-hot xB and tC models, Scion shifted 173,034 units in 2006, while Ward's notes the marque's 2013 sales are only at 41,261 units through July. In the story, AutoPacific analyst Dave Sullivan observes that other low-volume brands have far fewer dealer points, noting that Mini has just 115 dealer points and Infiniti has 200. By Sullivan's estimate, he would expect to see 350-500 Scion stores based on its sales figures.
Dealer question aside, the bigger issue is where the brand goes from here, and Fay admits Toyota is studying a number of different strategies, including possibly going "small-premium." Nothing is finalized, though according to Ward's, Fay discounts the idea that the FR-S - the brand's sales bright spot - will drive the brand to consider a more driver-oriented lineup.

Scion FR-S pitted against oldtimers RX-8 and S2000

Tue, 07 May 2013

There are very few vehicles available today that compare directly with the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins. A case could be made for the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and possibly even six-cylinder versions of American coupes like the Ford Mustang. Pretty much everything else is either too expensive or is powered by the wrong set of wheels.
The boys from EverydayDriver on YouTube decided the only fair way to judge the inherent qualities of the Toyobaru twins was to pit them against two standard-bearers of years past: The Honda S2000 and Mazda RX-8. Neither of these cars is an exact matchup, with the Honda boasting a convertible top and the RX-8 offering more practicality via a rear seat and two reverse-opening doors for easier access. What they do offer, however, are similar performance stats and proven reputations for excellent handling.
None of this talk answers the real question, though: Which one wins the comparison test? Scroll down to watch the video, and be prepared for something of a surprise conclusion.

Toyota FT-86 Open Concept leaves us feeling flushed

Wed, 20 Nov 2013

When last we checked in on our topless would-be hero, the Toyota FT-86 convertible had been reportedly placed on "indefinite hold." That was back in early October, not long after Toyota had trotted out the rear-wheel-drive canvasback to Scion dealers as a possible future product carrot if they decided not to turn in their franchises. And yet, we're here at the Tokyo Motor Show, where Toyota has taken the time to at least repaint the FT-86 Open Concept in "Flash Red," if not build a whole other car (the original Geneva showcar was white). It's enough to make our heads spin like a teenager on the verge of a breakup. Will they? Won't they?
At this point, we still don't know any more than you do - the last word we heard out of Toyota was not encouraging, although the story was that the program could still be fast-tracked if management had a change of heart. As the car has never been seen before in Japan, perhaps Toyota is merely extending its domestic audience a courtesy view before it lines this showcar in mothballs, or maybe they're still trying to make a decision on its fate and gauging public reaction on the homefront.
Interestingly, in a new story published today, Automotive News quotes Subaru brand boss Yasuyuki Yoshinaga downplaying the likelihood of a production model, saying flatly "We make the car, so if we don't make it, it can't happen." The executive went on to note, "Our engineering department told me that losing the entire roof requires a complete redesign of the structure. It would need a big change." Given that such a car would probably trade in rather small volumes, that sounds like a significant hurtle.
