2002 Saturn SC1 Coupe

3rd Owner (purchased in November 2012)

I bought this car as an extra vehicle when my drive to work was 80 miles round trip.
It has gotten me 44mpg. Mostly 38mpg was calculated.
My job situation has changed, so I don't need a 3rd vehicle anymore.

THE PROS:
Excellent gas mileage (38mpg average)
COLD A/C (when I bought it, he told me it was the selling point...he wasn't kidding)
Great heating (small cab to heat comfortably)
Rear Defrost
Intermittent Wipers
Excellent wheel alignment (perfect tracking on the road)
10,000 miles on tires (85% tread)
Excellent traction on snowy roads (low profile car...not so good above 8" drifts)
Cheap insurance (added $12/mo liability only)
New clear headlight lenses (original had haze and I didn't like it)
Plastic body (will not rust)
Engine runs solid (always starts nicely)
Transmission has been solid (a shifter cable broke last fall and both have been replaced)

Tight turning radius (fun to park in small spaces)

THE CONS:
High miles (few problems will come up...cheap to fix)
Flex pipe has hole (was quoted $90 to replace it, but I like the cheesy exhaust sound)
1.9L notorious for burning oil (I check oil once a month. Sometimes have to add a quart)
Traction control doesn't work (no desire to fix it...manual transmission anyway...start in 2nd gear in the snow and you're fine)
Service Engine light has been on since I bought it (Secondary O2 sensor...no desire to replace it...doesn't affect performance...useless emission add-on anyway)
100hp engine (holds 65mph like a champ, but takes 18 seconds to get there)

This car has been amazing and fun to drive. Hope it finds a good home. Sad to see it go, but I would love my half of the garage back.

Selling locally. I have the right to end auction early. (am I really one of those people now?)

VIDEO: Saturn's demise? We blame Jim Gaffigan*

Fri, 02 Oct 2009

When the deal to sell Saturn to Penske Automotive fell through, there were likely a lot of surprised people at General Motors' Detroit, MI headquarters. Penske released a statement saying that the reason the deal fell through after months of good faith negotiations was that a suitable post-GM supply of vehicles could not be found. However, after reacquainting ourselves with over eight minutes of outtakes from Jim Gaffigan's old Saturn commercial, we're thinking the comedic pitchman is to blame.

GM expands ignition switch recall to over 1.3 million cars amid climbing death toll

Tue, 25 Feb 2014

588,000 Saturn Sky, Saturn Ion, Pontiac Solstice and Chevy HHR models join the 778,000 cars already being recalled.
General Motors has announced a massive expansion of a 778,000-unit recall we told you about two weeks ago, doubling not only the total number of cars affected but expanding the recall beyond Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 models previously mentioned. The recall originally centered around ignition switches that could slip out of the "run" position if jostled or if any weight was applied to the key in the cylinder.

Car thief lands Saturn on Fresno roof

Fri, 06 Jan 2012

Residents of a Fresno, California apartment building recently awoke to debris falling from their ceiling after a car thief managed to execute a perfect parking job on the structure's roof. Police say 26-year-old Benjamin Tucker stole the Saturn sedan from a nearby house before striking either a curb or some rocks, vaulting the vehicle into the air and onto the roof. After seeing his predicament, Tucker leapt from the roof and fled the scene. Or at least he tried to. Tucker broke his leg in the fall and only made it around a quarter of a mile from the crash when police picked him up.
No one else was harmed in the stunt.
Tucker had two outstanding warrants for his arrest at the time for a hit-and-run and evading police. A special crane had to be called in to remove the Saturn from the apartment roof and the structure will indeed require repairs. Hit the jump for a news report on the incident.
