1977 Saab 99 Gl Fuel Injected, Rust Free, New Paint, New Interior, Inca Wheels on 2040-cars
Charlottesville, Virginia, United States
I am reluctantly selling this very rare and nicely restored Saab classic 99 GL. I have a small collection of classic cars and the warehouse where I've stored many of my cars for the past few years was recently sold. I am searching for alternative garage space but need to prepare by selling off some of my collection. This 99 is a great car that needs nothing and is ready to drive and show today.
This particular 99 GL was restored about three years ago just before being acquired by the previous owner. That owner used it only as a weekend car and it was always garaged. The odometer (and title) reads 55,126 actual miles but best guess from the previous owner is that actual mileage is now closer to 65,000 since the odometer stopped working in 2012. The speedometer is functional so it seems the gauge itself is most likely the issue. All other gauges including the clock are operable. The engine is original to the car and runs like new...it's the very quick and responsive 2 liter fuel injected 4 cylinder that made the Saab 99 popular on the European road rally circuit in the 1970's. Saab originally sourced this engine from Triumph but during the early 1970's refined and built the engine so that by 1977 it was known to be both durable and reliable. I've never had to add oil and I only have a few sporadic drops on the garage floor. The restoration included new brakes. I just changed the oil/filter within the last 200 miles of driving. The 4-speed transmission has a new clutch and shifts as it should. During the restoration two years ago the car was professionally repainted the original Saab Alpine White (more of a cream color). The interior is superb and was restored in the original dark brown cloth/vinyl combination with dark brown carpet and tan trim below the dash. The tan headliner is new (see photo). The dash is excellent but missing one vinyl trim piece so I added a custom fitted dash top cover. The dark brown carpet is excellent but could use a cleaning. While there is a rear antenna and speaker wiring to the rear deck lid there is no radio in the car. There is no a/c. Chrome and glass is very good all around and both windows crank easily up and down. A blue indoor car cover is included with the car. The trunk is huge and has the original jack, carpet and full size spare. *The previous owner replaced the original wheels with a later set of model 99 turbo "inca" wheels on new radials which really set the car off. If desired I can provide the new owner with the original set of Saab steel wheels with hard to find chrome hub caps on a set of nearly new radial tires. A few months ago the seat bottom on the drivers seat sagged a bit and I suspect that one of the seat frame straps either broke or came loose... I placed a support under the seat and all is well, but it will need attending- or maybe you'll think it's just fine as-is. The trunk and engine compartment was not repainted during the restoration but, as you can see in the photo's, the color match is perfect and it shows how clean the car was before being repainted. While essentially rust free, there was a small 2 inch area at the bottom lip of the drivers door near the rubber trim that was repaired. You'll be hard pressed to find another Saab 99 in this condition at any price. It's the perfect affordable and reliable classic driver that will generate a thumbs up wherever you go and will almost certainly be the only 99 at your local car show. Several people have stopped me to let me know they fondly recall a 99 as one of their first cars and I don't remember ever seeing another one on the road around here in Virginia in many years. All emails will be answered promptly and I'll be happy to show the car to interested local buyers. I've also listed the car for sale locally and on enthusiast web sites so the ad could be pulled at any time if it is sold... and if I get lucky and find some new garage space before it sells, I will happily keep her in my collection. |

Last 900 Saabs heading to auction
Fri, 22 Jun 2012If you've been wanting to get your hands on one last new Saab but missed out on the great Saab sell-off when Saab Cars North America declared bankruptcy, well, your ship has now come in.
Actually, it came in last year - but hundreds of new Saabs got waylaid at ports in California and New Jersey because of the bankruptcy, according to SaabWorld.net. Those cars are now slated for auction, some 900 of them, which will be available for dealers, exporters and rental car companies to bid on beginning next week. Eventually, 300 of these cars should make their way to Saab dealers, where they're expected to be sold off at 30- to 50-percent discounts. The other 600 will either be exported or used as rentals, according to the report, so "the price of Saabs will not be severely depressed."
Besides the new cars, some 67 company cars, including some interesting stuff like a 1960 Saab Quantum IV and a 1970 Sonnett III, will also be auctioned off, according to the report. Of the new cars, just over half are 9-5 models, some 400 are 9-3 sedans, another 60 are 9-3 wagons, and about a dozen are convertibles. According to the report, 28 are actually 9-4X crossovers, which is more than 10 percent of Saab's total 2011 sales for that model.
Court extends Saab reorganization bid until end of November
Fri, 10 Oct 2014Saab parent company National Electric Vehicle Sweden refuses to go down without a fight. After a recent trip to court, the company is emerging with an extension on its reorganization until November 29. According to Europe Online Magazine, there's also an appointed committee of creditors and union representatives to monitor NEVS' restructuring process.
NEVS still isn't giving up hope of saving itself, and the company claims there are has two potential strategies for getting back on its feet. The main plan is to "finalize the negotiations with the two Asian automotive manufacturers," according to a press release. Those firms still aren't identified, but Mahindra may be involved. According to Europe Online Magazine, one of the businesses is looking to take partial ownership of NEVS, and the other is considering some sort of cooperation with it.
If that plan fails, the second option is to take advantage of the factory and become a contract manufacturer.
Saab US bankruptcy plan gets legal green-light
Thu, 18 Jul 2013It feels utterly bizarre that we're still talking about Saab, but Reuters is reporting that the bankrupt Swedish manufacturer's American arm has gotten approval from the US Bankruptcy Court to liquidate its assets and pay back creditors. As part of the plan, secured creditors like Ally Financial will receive full repayment. Unsecured creditors, consisting of those affected by abandoned leases and contracts will get anywhere from 25 to 82 percent of their money back.
There are currently $77 million in unsecured claims, according to Reuters, but that number doesn't include claims from former Saab dealers. Naturally, the entire affair is full of lawyers and legalese. A trust formed on the Saab side will be negotiating with creditors and their affiliates in an attempt to reduce claims against Saab. This sounds like the start of a long and sordid affair...
