I've decided to sell my Saab 9-3 Turbo Convertible - I really like this car, very cheap on gas and has a lot of extra features that normally only come with the more expensive imports, but it was fun while it lasted.

Some highlights for the car:

  • Only has 104K miles on it; exceptionally low for a 1999
  • Nice leather interior, no rips or tears or separated seams
  • Heated power seats w/Memory Recall work great
  • Hardtop boot cover for convertible top works perfect, goes up and down just fine and looks much better than an exposed top
  • Digital Climate control system works
  • Dash is not sun damaged like a lot of Verts - very good condition
  • Radio and driver information controls work great, no issues or problems
  • Locking rear folding seats for security when the top is down
  • Interior is kept nice and clean, and I don't use that greasy spray stuff that's get all over your hands either, I just wipe it down with a microfiber towel to keep dust to a minimum
  • Exterior is in good shape, has some normal dents and dings around it (one of my pic.s is of the hood and shows a couple of small dings, sort of hard to tell though)but nothing you wouldn't expect - no smashed panels or anything.  It does have some scratches on the front bumper corner which can be seen in one of my pictures

Here is a small list of items that have recently been done for the car:

  • Tires replaced at 101,600 miles (new tires are Falken, have less than 3K miles on them)
  • New shocks & struts
  • New air filter
  • New air filter heat shield
  • Replaced Shifter assembly and shifter rod
  • Fresh oil change
  • Replaced battery with nice Interstate battery
  • New top was professionally installed and works fine, no stalling or whiney slow movement
  • New Fuel filter and fuel pump
  • Steering wheel controls where replaced
  • Replaced muffler - exhaust started sounding a little loud so I had it replaced, remaining exhaust system is intact and in good condition

The car start right up, engine runs really good (as it should, these engines where built very strong until GM took over around 2002-03).  Most all of the electronics work very well with the exception of the following:

  • Power antenna doesn't go up
  • A/C doesn't blow cold (I tried it again this afternoon at around 85 degrees and it's not blowing cold air, condenser kicks on and cycles just fine but air doesn't get cold)
  • Power mirrors work sometimes, but I think the contacts are dirty because sometimes they work flawless and sometimes they don't move

Now the bad part...

There are no mechanic shops around where I live that want to work on a Saab (very rural area) and the car is stuck in 3rd gear.  So now I'm stuck with a nice older car that I can't get out of gear and no one around to help fix it.  I don't really have any options other than to sell it and take a beating on the price.  You can wiggle the shift knob and it moves around freely, but there is something wrong with it and I have no idea how to fix it.  Might be a cheap fix and someone can make some money on the car, I don't know and I've already bought another toy so I need this one sold.

I can help arrange shipping and help load the car on the trailer, it's not a big deal to me - just let me know.  Buyer will be responsible for all shipping expense though.  I also have the car for sale locally.

Let me know if you have any questions; I have the reserve set way below KBB/NADA average book value and I have title in-hand so the car will sell, thanks.

Petrolicious keeps our love of the Saab Sonett aflame

Wed, 19 Mar 2014

German auto designs lean toward function and purpose. Italian designers deliver passion and beauty. The Brits, majesty. American cars, brashness and authority. If you want a funky design, though, you go to Sweden. The land of cheap, do-it-yourself furniture and delicious meatballs knows a thing or six about style and design, and while that character is only now reemerging thanks to a certain string of Volvo concepts, it use to be that Saab was the authority on penning some of the industry's more unique designs.
Take the beautiful Sonett for example - a small coupe whose appearance is a funky mishmash of a Porsche 911 and a Bugeyed Sprite with just a hint of a Citroën DS (it's that convex rear window). It's a positively striking car, made more unique by its two-stroke, three-cylinder powertrain and four-on-the-tree manual transmission. With just 70 horsepower hauling about 1,500 pounds of Swedish style, the Sonett strikes us as an ideal alternative to some of the English sports cars of its day, particularly for those that are looking for something beyond your average MG or Triumph.
For Glenn Roberts, the Sonett was a part of his childhood. His family owned example was originally a special-order item by his parents in 1967. He bought the car from them 13 years later and has never looked back, completing a restoration in 2004. With a story like that, it's not surprising that Roberts and his silver Sonett are the most recent pairing to get some attention from Petrolicious.

Vampire Weekend burns for Saab

Thu, 21 Mar 2013

Or is it the other way around?
Could Vampire Weekend be trying to tell me something? A just-launched music video for the indie rock band's new single Diane Young features what looks like a pretty mint black Saab 900 Turbo Convertible being torched in slow-motion. In fact, with the exception of a brief, flickering cameo by a 900 three-door of a similar vintage, that's all that there is to the nearly three-minute long video. It's both sad and oddly beautiful.
Coincidentally, I have a similar-looking turbocharged black Saab convertible sitting in my garage, and I've been reluctantly pondering its sale this very week. Admittedly, mine is a later model (2001 9-3 Viggen), but tri-spokes and more tapered rump aside, it looks eerily identical. And while mine isn't mired in flames (I love it too much to torch it), through no fault of its own, it's been sitting motionless far too regularly. Thankfully, I see a better future for it than the droptop seen above.

GM recalls over 230,000 more Trailblazer-family SUVs over door electronics

Sun, 16 Jun 2013

Back in August, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall on the General Motors GMT360 SUVs (Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X) ranging from the 2005 to 2007 model years and the 2006 GMT370 SUVs (Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL) due to potential fires associated with the driver's door module. Initially limited to 250,000 units sold or registered in 20 Snow Belt states (and the District of Columbia), the recall has now been expanded to include an additional 193,000 of these SUVs in the US and, according to The Detroit News, 40,000 more sold outside the US, including Canada and Mexico.
Like the original recall, the issue is still a faulty driver's door module that can short out, which could lead to a fire. The Detroit News is reporting that, out of the 443,000 units being recalled, GM says that there were 58 fires that caused 11 minor injuries, and the expanded recall accounted for six fires and one injury. Despite the lower number of fires, the recall notice recommends that owners park their vehicles until the recall repairs has been performed.
On recalled units with functional modules, the repair consists of a protective coating being applied to the module, while vehicles with modules that are not working properly will have the driver's door module replaced. The official recall notice is posted below, and it includes contact information for customers of all five brands.
